Some tips for recognizing anthems: - Neutral countries' anthems are usually slow. - S. American anthems are fast and jumpy - European anthems usually have better use of orchestras - Turkic anthems sound "threatening." - Many south/east asian anthems do sound "exotic." - Eastern European ones are more "powerful." - Southern European ones sound a lot like march -African countries usually have bad use of orchestra - Memorize the word beginnings of at least English-speaking countries (like O Canada) - The Russian/Soviet anthem should be just memorized. New Zealand legally has two anthems (only one other nation has two anthems of equal status: Denmark), God Defend New Zealand and God Save the King. But God Defend New Zealand is used commonly to represent the nation (while God Save the King is used for the governor-general or when a royal is present). It was originally written as a poem, but it was set to music in 1876. Its popularity grew and it became a second anthem in 1977. The anthem has five verses, each in English and Māori. The Māori version is not a direct translation. Usually, the way the anthem is performed in public is the first verse is sung twice, first in Māori and then in English. That aside...can't believe you didn't guess the beautiful anthem of our glorious nation. And I thought you were MY friend! I don't think I'll be able to recover from this betrayal.
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt for not knowing the Finnish anthem, because it's also the same melody as the Estonian anthem so it could've been two different countries. But saying Turkey for the Greek anthem is pretty much the number one way to start a war between those two countries. And seeing him guess Uruguay for one before the actual Uruguayan anthem...I felt his pain. I hope Jack knows the reason they have the same instruments is because these instrumental versions were pretty much all done (except the North Korea one) by the US Navy Band. These anthems aren't done by the bands of their own countries. Speaking of the Greek anthem: Here's some interesting facts about it! It is the anthem of both Greece AND the Republic of Cyprus! It is also the longest national anthem in the world by length of text. Only the first two stanzas were adopted officially, but the total amount of stanzas is *ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY EIGHT!*

I only got three this time 😐 The reason they're composed for traditional orchestral instruments is so that the military bands of host nations can play the anthem of the visiting heads of state. If they used exotic instruments it would cause diplomatic incidents when the band plays it wrong! It's usually the lyrics that are the important and distinguishing feature anyway. A tip for learning the anthems is just to memorize them by watching a lot of sporting events like the Olympics, some countries will become very familiar quickly.
The national anthem of North Korea and South Korea shares the same name "Aegukka" (Song of Patriotism). This is because both of the lyrics were from the patriotic poets in the time during the Japanese invasion.

(2:00) I would assume these are pulled from Wikipedia, and they are composed by the sheet music using the same instruments for all countries, making it neutral. For example, they wouldn't use a shamisen for Japan, because that might be considered insensitive and insulting. But the usage of these instruments might also be considered Eurocentric, so there's that too.
