It was actually a very smart move for Kurt to win the title from Steve. 9/11 was only a week or two before Unforgiven and people were obviously depressed and sad about the complete destruction that awful day, and Kurt’s whole gimmick was about being an American/Olympic Hero and giving people hope.
That match and the post-match celebration with his family and all the WWF talent coming to the ring is one of my favorite overall segments in wrestling ever. I was 10 when that happened and I still get goosebumps today as a 30 year old man when I watch it back. It was perfect.
His whole career kinda is a big-old question mark though. We ASSUME that he had a career-ending injury but no one ever came out and directly said that where I saw anyway. Maybe I missed something. 🤔
