Can’t believe he not only helped write the show, but he acted out his drama and relived so many parts of it. Amazing and powerful performance. Something this traumatic is almost unimaginable and he decided to make a show and act in it himself!
I’m amazed that the victim played himself in this series. He is very brave and self aware. He admitted to liking Martha’s attention and kept going back to his abuser’s home.. I thought he was going to unalive him that last visit. A complicated story, he was searching to find himself and somehow was a glutton for toxic, abusive relationships. Very interesting series. Humans are a trip
I cried so much because I'm still confused why we does this to ourselves. How easily we forgive and try get and understanding of our abusers and condemned ourselves in the process.

I watched "Baby Reindeer" last week on Netflix and it was an eye-opener. How Richard Gad was able to hold up under the torment and stalking by Martha is beyond me. He is obviously a very talented and resilient man. I found this comedy-drama deeply disturbing and was extremely thankful that Martha did not kill him as she was capable of anything. "Baby Reindeer" is a must-see.
I believe u may've missed the point of the series. Martha's very ill, but she's not the "bad guy" & Richard is not the "hero". That's what makes this such a uniquely compelling, sophisticated, empathic, & self-effacing examination of the human experience.
Same I had no clue what I was about to watch I thought it’d be some cheesy show to kill time watching but it took me on a trip for sure. Very hard to watch
I’m so glad that this addressed the mental illness aspect. Martha is a victim of a failing system and I’m glad Richard recognizes this while also recognizing he was a victim too. They were both failed. I hope they’re both healing well.

Everyone loves to name the system but there's so much a system can do against manipulative, uncooperative and unwilling people. Matha played the system after getting arrested once and used her knowledge of law to her advantage. They even made her go through a programme that didn't work because she wasn't willing to change. Donny also indulged both Matha and the creepy writer. He's girlfriend even told him to stop going to the writer's apartment abd he flat out refused, how is the system supposed to intervene there. He refused to tell the police about the whole story, the attack on Terry would have got Matha then and there, but he refused to do so. He hindered his own help on many ways. What can a system do with both Donny and Matha playing, lying and indulging their sick relationship?
A close friend was the victim of physical and mental abuse by an ex who became a stalker. He racked up a number of victims over a few short years and only got locked up when he was caught for child s. offences. He's back out now and still threatening harm to all of his prior victims. The law needs to toughen up. If he had been banged up sooner he wouldn't have had the opportunity he had to possibly ruin a young childs life.
This show did a fantastic job of showing how some victims respond to abuse, how the shame controls and takes over your life. You’ll do almost anything to forget, to not accept and face what happened. You think if other people know the truth they’ll think less of you because that’s how you see yourself, especially when you’re groomed by someone. I really related to Donny because I understand his trauma. I’m a SA survivor and I was also groomed at thirteen by someone older who had more power than I did. It took me many years to talk about it, even when I knew what happened to me was wrong I still felt I wasn’t allowed to say it out loud. My shame and embarrassment controlled me and I allowed myself to be treated in ways I didn’t deserve because of it. It took over twenty years, having a daughter and a wonderful mother in law who recognized that I needed help before I actually got help and started allowing myself to say out loud what happened to me. Even after everything I know now I still struggle and live with extreme anxiety and PTSD. I still feel shame when I talk about what happened to me, but I now know it’s the pain and trauma making me feel that. I know I don’t deserve it and I didn’t deserve what happened to me. This show really does an amazing job of showing self loathing and how you can get trapped in a cycle of abuse and trauma. I think so many people have this idealistic imagine of what a victim is, who they are and how they’ll react. This series showed some very uncomfortable things, it was brutal and honest. Hopefully, it will help people understand mental health and victims a bit more. I hope it opens up many more conversations and gives others the strength to confront their truths.
A masterpiece on many levels. A very moving series, very well played. A man searching for who he is and eventually finding himself and subsequently understanding others and their mental issues. Very deep.
Reminds me of the abuse my Mom suffered from my Dad he is a domestic abuser, he stalked her, took her phone 📱away, stripped her topless for no reason in front of me and my little brother, attacked for no reason nearly every day and made up lies about her, myself and my little brother (he regularly tell random people, family members and friends that my brother was gay when he was 13 or 14 despite the fact that he had a girlfriend later on.) he took away my Mom letters, would not let her speak to her own family but yet he allowed himself to speaks her family. At one point my Mom did call 📞 the police on him but they did nothing, although we finally left him a decade later because I told my Mom I didn’t want stay with him anymore after I heard him attack her for no reason again at the middle of the night after she came back from work. When I say all these things about him to people and therapist when his present he would say why I’m I against him to the therapist and I’m like “ You’re the one who was against us, and you act like that most of times.” Living with Dad was like walking 🚶♀️ on eggshells everyday. Sure domestic violence and stalking law have change since then but I still believe the police wouldn’t do anything about it.

I have so much respect for Richard, playing himself considering what he went through was more than brave. It was traumatising to watch _those scenes_ much less go through them and then play them again for the series.
@Angela-cc1hd There are a couple of shows and movies where victims play themselves. I can't remember any by name but I saw a movie about a girl who was trafficked in a hotel room and played by herself.
I had a stalker once, an ex-boyfriend, he was such a good liar that when I called the police to have him removed from my yard,, he actually persuaded them that I was the liar and they brought him back.
As someone who has dealt with some similar issues as he did, I was beyond impressed with this whole production. I can’t imagine how proud he must feel to be able to be this brave and help others
It was an utterly compelling drama- the fact that it is based on an actual stalking is chilling. The acting and script are stunningly good, it was really interesting how he depicted the victim of the stalker as also somehow being somewhat addicted to the attention he got, until, of course, things turned very dark. Essentially, it's a drama about what can happen when mental health fail in both victim and perpetrator and how weak the law is in preventing this.
I imagine producing this helped him to feel "in control" of the trauma. I've been stalked, and especially if you're a guy, it feels surreal/unreal. Especially if the perp is a beautiful woman--every guy you tell is envious. Only women are like "nah, she's a monster"
I know the feeling. A lot of men think it’s flattering and women distance themselves from the reality. Women are conditioned only men are capable of stalking and being obsessed to the extreme
I don't think most men are even taken seriously, let alone get sympathy. When it happens, you're always told that you're lucky, you need to get off your high horse and accept her into your life. Stalkers are often violent too, and while society usually considers self defence a natural right, nah, not when it's a woman. Then self defence is illegal. Also, apparently women are reasonable so you must have done something to "lead them on" or piss them off enough for you to deserve all this.
I had to turn it off and resume after I’d gotten some sleep, because Martha is downright disturbed and it had me on edge. I didn’t know it was a true story. Awesome performances from these 2 actors. It’s nice to see a man highlight their trauma. He tried sweeping it under the rug himself and just deal with it. No one should have to live like this.
I watched this not having any idea what this series was about, I binged watched it nonstop! Richard did a beautiful job writing and acting his story out! I can't imagine him reliving his trauma and the stress of all this, the whole cast did a beautiful job! I hope the cast and series win many awards because it was imperfectly imperfeck!
I think the show really worked because he was willing to examine his own behavior in the whole thing. (Of course he’s not to blame for the abuse from Martha and Darrien whatsoever but he explored his bad decisions when it came to his reaction to the stalking as well as his relationships)
How crazy I literally just finished the series and look it up on TH-cam and watch mojo came out with this video 4 hours ago, great timing, and great series!
You should come to Greece. A stalker murdered his girlfriend right in front of a police station as the cop was watching. She asked for help but they told her they had no police car so she left and then he killed her. Chaos
4:57 "We've gone to such great lengths to disguise her, to the point that I don't think she'd recognise herself". Yeah, if she sees the show I'm sure she'll assume it's based on someone else stalking the exact same guy she stalked, in the exact same circumstances!
nerozero-mp7hd ye when i watched this show i thought like he would get some harsh judgements from people. He basicaly admitted to doing horrible things himself. So eh. I feel for him tho. I think the meaning of this all was to set awareness on things that are not perfect and should be changed. Its not like he made the show to make him look like a great person. Its a pretty unique way to get a point across to people i think. Hes brave to putting himself out there as not a good person who did lots of dumb stuff.
I actually think that was just a complete lie, because they really didn‘t disguised her almost at all. People found her via her still public Tweets to him in just a couple days. She even looks kinda similar 😅 I think he just wanted to discourage people to look for her
Okay , he knows how insane ppl are the internet are so he doesn’t want ppl to pull crazy stunts or try to harm the actual stalker as well as most likely not wanting people to provoke his stalker or piss them off by giving away their true identity . Theres a reason he tells people to stop speculating about who it is.
I have a few questions from a logistical perspective. How did this lawyer turned stalker survive? Where was she getting her money from? I mean she was living alone in a house, stalking him everywhere which meant taking public transport, buying stuff (presumably by getting people to buy them for her so got that) But she looked pretty healthy so I am genuinely curious.
This guy is pretty brave basicaly admitting to all the wrong things he did. Even things that some people would view him very different for now that we all know
My partner has been stalked by a guy since she was 14 for over 15 yrs he has tried to reach out and has even been put to jail on 18 counts of different charges but yet still walks free today I worry about her safety everyday because he makes new accounts calls from different numbers there not alot the police will do and that is the scariest part of it all ..please anyone who is going through something similar protect yourself take self defense, carry a weapon anything to insure you are safe the world is crazy now days
I liked it. It had a lot of funny parts but had some really implausible parts I found too hard to swallow. Like when Donny is at the police station reporting Martha but fails to mention she has a criminal record a mile long and served prison time for stalking but decides not to mention it to police and then wonders and complains why the cops are not doing anything. It was a good series if you can ignore the fact that a lot of what happens is implausible and outrageous. I guess maybe the underlying point is he is a glutton for punishment and secretly enjoys being abused by Martha but then why go to police in the first place?
He says that in the end. He goes to the police only when people he cares for are getting hurt. He doubted he’d ever report her if it was just him. Quite fucked up.
i was a victim of stalking and harrassment by my wicked neighbour, like in the uk i didnt receive much help when i went to court. one of the lawyers even asked me if the neighbour was insane. ! they were there . at work, at a course i went to , church, visiting family. once even tried to run me off the road when i left for work. in my country one has to have lots of evidence. recorded, videos etc. who goes out everyday with a camera to record? nowadays i fight back anyway i can. its said, fight every evil. thats what i do. i know what Gadd went through partly . his is worse!
@@annelallyShes been extremely vocal about it... Considering nobody would have given her a second thought if she didn't say anything, putting her name out now seems like its still stalkerish... She NEEDED people to know it was about her, but a stalker doesn't always know what they do is stalking. She kinda outed herself
The public has declared it! "Baby Reindeer" stands as a true masterpiece. A round of applause for the exceptional cast and crew. Anticipate a plethora of awards being bestowed upon this remarkable piece of artistry.
The psychotic people has the ability to going deep through into their victim personal life. Some of them use this ability and choose to kill their victim out of personal pleasure and some of them just let their victim experience the horror feeling of being "chained" by them. Martha is the latter type and he should be grateful because she almost going into first type.
I agree that it was so Hard to watch but on the other hand it really explained how complicated our minds are. How terrible abuse is but also generational abuse . I loved it and I am going to think about it for a long time. I am sure. Our narcissism can be titilated even by monsters . Mo sfera who must have themselves been victims before, not to excuse them but to understand them somehow. Only by understanding we can maybe improve the situation
I just finished the show and man was it great and disturbing at the same time! My husband stopped it on episode 2, he said it’s too uncomfortable to watch and I agreed 💀 great acting though
Sounds like my ex , 1 week 160 calls and voice messages, he use wait in my garden and in my shed for me to come home, sleep in my garden , injunctions, arrested week after week. I was high priority to the police ,i had it for years , took him 8 years to finally leave me alone
I didn’t know what grooming was until I watch this I’m experiencing this now not many to talk about this as a male…yup dating women is hard on me I’m embarrassed I’m messed up probably won’t have help here either
Been stalked by one of these since 2007 after my fiance died and she tried to assume her identity. My eventual restraining order got dismissed months later over a "technicality"
I watched 1 1/2 episodes of this show and couldn’t watch anymore because “Richard Gad” was just too creepy. The show didn’t explicitly say it but he was far into addiction to opioids during this whole time. I get the feeling this whole thing is too “sanitized”. Martha was definitely crazy off the charts but I didn’t get the fact that he kept going to be with her? Too stupid for my taste….I suspect money or something else was exchanging hands. Not going to finish it.
1. This was a great series. 2. He could be a fantasist. "This is a true story" except none of it can be independently proved apart from the fact he was a terrible stand-up, but he is a great actor and writer.
@@yothiga The media would by now have searched court records for stalking cases and for Gadd's name as a witness. Either they've tried and nothing exists, or they have and feel exposing her real name would be nothing more than just pointing their finger at a mentally ill person and invading her privacy.
A national register is a good idea. I had a stalker. Went to court to give evidence against him. Found out I was witness/victim number 29….. who knows how many were after me.
I do wonder where all of these TH-cam videos went ? Like the one of Martha interrupting and the one of his breakdown which went viral, Never seen it, still cant find it
You think the police part is over exaggerating but we had same reaction to being attacked by our neighbour that knows the law well enough he can't get caught it really hurt to watch those parts
The police literally dont care about peoples well beings and are more focused on the war on drugs and petty crimes. Plus they would rather use excuses here to avoid looking into “trickier” because it’s apparently “too hard” to prove even with 100% evidence. I have had many friends who were stalked/harassed and r-ed and when they tried reporting they were always dismissed.
“we’ve gone to such lengths to hide her identity the real Martha probably wouldn’t even be able to recognize herself in the show” says the man and star of the show who is clearly the person she stalked. Like change as many details as you want. The real Martha will be able to tell simply by your face being involved in a “true story about a stalker”😂
@@themotiavtionzone where in my post does it say I feel sympathy for her? I’m just pointing out the irony in that statement and that I thought said irony was funny.
Glad the show was a popular one. I didn't care for the show and didn't care for the characters although the actors did a good job portraying the sad bunch
I'd never carry on the way Martha did, but I did found myself empathising with her abit, having recently been in a relationship with a covert narcissist, who never felt the way I did for her

I finished just now 2 😂x
I haven't stopped thinking about this show since I finished it. Superb acting and storytelling. Simply amazing ❤❤❤❤
Police can never help in this country, they really need to step it up
You should come to Greece. A stalker murdered his girlfriend right in front of a police station as the cop was watching. She asked for help but they told her they had no police car so she left and then he killed her. Chaos
4:57 "We've gone to such great lengths to disguise her, to the point that I don't think she'd recognise herself". Yeah, if she sees the show I'm sure she'll assume it's based on someone else stalking the exact same guy she stalked, in the exact same circumstances!
nerozero-mp7hddude are you serious? Bro was a victim most of his adult life, leave him alone.
nerozero-mp7hd ye when i watched this show i thought like he would get some harsh judgements from people.
One of the best shows I've ever seen
Tiktok has already found the woman and posted the Facebook page and her public tweets to Gadd
I have a few questions from a logistical perspective.
How did this lawyer turned stalker survive? Where was she getting her money from?
I mean she was living alone in a house, stalking him everywhere which meant taking public transport, buying stuff (presumably by getting people to buy them for her so got that)
But she looked pretty healthy so I am genuinely curious.
Council housing/benefits, probably. Especially given her mental health issues.
This guy is pretty brave basicaly admitting to all the wrong things he did. Even things that some people would view him very different for now that we all know
This serie is really, really great, wow! They are super actors. I love how complicated this story is and that Martha is indeed loveable
I wouldn’t say loveable, more sympathetic
The actress of Martha played this role so well I get chills whenever I see her in other shows
My partner has been stalked by a guy since she was 14 for over 15 yrs he has tried to reach out and has even been put to jail on 18 counts of different charges but yet still walks free today I worry about her safety everyday because he makes new accounts calls from different numbers there not alot the police will do and that is the scariest part of it all ..please anyone who is going through something similar protect yourself take self defense, carry a weapon anything to insure you are safe the world is crazy now days
I literally just watched this today, after procrastinating for weeks. Wow!!!!!! What a story. 😮😮
i was a victim of stalking and harrassment by my wicked neighbour, like in the uk i didnt receive much help when i went to court. one of the lawyers even asked me if the neighbour was insane. ! they were there . at work, at a course i went to , church, visiting family. once even tried to run me off the road when i left for work. in my country one has to have lots of evidence. recorded, videos etc. who goes out everyday with a camera to record? nowadays i fight back anyway i can. its said, fight every evil. thats what i do. i know what Gadd went through partly . his is worse!
Thanks for clearing up my confusion of what this habit is about, you were very in order and explained it clearly!
They found the real “martha” 3 days after the show aired, his “great efforts to disguise her” failed spectacularly XD
Very few people actually knew her name.
@@annelally and yet they found her anyway..
@@annelallyShes been extremely vocal about it... Considering nobody would have given her a second thought if she didn't say anything, putting her name out now seems like its still stalkerish... She NEEDED people to know it was about her, but a stalker doesn't always know what they do is stalking. She kinda outed herself
watcheeng fron iPhon
If someone decided to stalk me, they’d have a very boring time following me around the supermarket, and once a week putting the dustbins out.
Their law enforcement sucks so bad. I can't imagine people being so incompetent back home!
This was nuts. We just finished it. Chilling stuff.
She'd be perfect playing Susan Doyle.
Huh? They don’t look alike at all.
Loved it! Great insight into all of the characters.Wery well written, acting and great story telling.

Brilliant show
The public has declared it!
Great series . ❤ She was brilliant. Baby Reindeer because he has big eyes and big ears like a baby reindeer. 😅
Juat finished it wow hes amazing respect to him
Wowow I mean wowow. Thank you for sharing your story. I'm so sorry this happened to you. Because of this so many lives will be saved. 🙏🏽🙏🏽
PSA - there is absolutely no point to watching this video unless your intent is to ruin the series for yourself.
Not really a “the story behind video” and more of a general recap of the show
Just finished this show. 🤯🤯🤯
7:32 Stalking isn't taken seriously enough in any Western country it is seen as a joke
@nerozero-mp7hd a one sided one smh it's always the same you did something to make this happen no matter the sex or race
I agree that it was so
Hard to watch but on the other hand it really explained how complicated our minds are.
Stunning show
This show is so good and so eye opening on many fronts

I just finished the show and man was it great and disturbing at the same time! My husband stopped it on episode 2, he said it’s too uncomfortable to watch and I agreed 💀 great acting though
Chilling series
Sounds like my ex , 1 week 160 calls and voice messages, he use wait in my garden and in my shed for me to come home, sleep in my garden , injunctions, arrested week after week. I was high priority to the police ,i had it for years , took him 8 years to finally leave me alone
I didn’t know what grooming was until I watch this I’m experiencing this now not many to talk about this as a male…yup dating women is hard on me I’m embarrassed I’m messed up probably won’t have help here either
Biggest pile of nonsense I ever seen. The actress who played the stalker redeemed it
Wow pretty insulting to people who’ve actually been stalked
@nerozero-ek5th there’s no ‘obviously’ about it. Saying it’s ‘biggest pile of nonsense I ever seen’ doesn’t scream ‘haha I’m joking’
41,000 email is insane….😮 damn
Been stalked by one of these since 2007 after my fiance died and she tried to assume her identity. My eventual restraining order got dismissed months later over a "technicality"
This isn’t the “true story” behind the show this is just a recap
lol I didn’t catch she didn’t have a iPhone… I was just doing my best to keep up with the emails before they disappeared
Really good
Hes defo going to be in tv shows films
I watched 1 1/2 episodes of this show and couldn’t watch anymore because “Richard Gad” was just too creepy. The show didn’t explicitly say it but he was far into addiction to opioids during this whole time. I get the feeling this whole thing is too “sanitized”. Martha was definitely crazy off the charts but I didn’t get the fact that he kept going to be with her? Too stupid for my taste….I suspect money or something else was exchanging hands. Not going to finish it.
Cold shower, that's one way to sort out a stalker.
I wonder if anyone knows the song playing in the background in the club in the 2nd episode of the series? It was playing at the 19th minute.
🎶Smalltown Boy- bronski beat
And the lyrics are about a gay man in trouble about being gay in The 80’s
@@Adriana-tm2nf thanks!
1. This was a great series.
2. He could be a fantasist.
"This is a true story" except none of it can be independently proved apart from the fact he was a terrible stand-up, but he is a great actor and writer.
Ikr, If it’s a true story, the name of the stalker will be known by now.
@@yothiga The media would by now have searched court records for stalking cases and for Gadd's name as a witness. Either they've tried and nothing exists, or they have and feel exposing her real name would be nothing more than just pointing their finger at a mentally ill person and invading her privacy.
People have found her Twitter already tho

Is it worth a watch?
Absolutely, I binged the whole thing one night it will have your emotions on a rollercoaster

The police didnt fail. Donny failed to report any of the assults on the women he claimed to have loved. He wanted to drag this on clearly.
Why she didn’t report it…
Ooh you would never say this if it were a woman for SURE lol
@@biafigueira3334 wym
When I finished with an ex boyfriend, he knew my movements 2 or 3 times. That was enough for me. I can't begin to know what he must be going through.
They found the twitter of the woman who did this. I hope people don't start harassing her but this was so insane 😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫
Scary stuff
A national register is a good idea. I had a stalker. Went to court to give evidence against him. Found out I was witness/victim number 29….. who knows how many were after me.
Very well done.
I do wonder where all of these TH-cam videos went ? Like the one of Martha interrupting and the one of his breakdown which went viral,
Never seen it, still cant find it
I just searched and found it quickly. It is on tik too and you can hear a woman laugh - maybe Martha back there
The video where he breaks down and it goes viral doesn't exist it's fiction
God damn this show is weird but I really liked it. Recommend
Spoilers?!!!!!!!!.. Beware!!!!!
I had a stalker once. This woman was obsessed with my. So I decided to make you my friend with benifits and we are very happy now.
I wouldn't mind if i had a stalker as long as she was pretty and spoke to me
I was stalked by a classmate. The useless teachers at the school did jack all!
Does it matter????
@@fernandapalacios8578 not really I just thought it was funny of him to say such a thing
Why are u feeling some sympathy for a stalker who has been in prison before????
@@themotiavtionzone where in my post does it say I feel sympathy for her? I’m just pointing out the irony in that statement and that I thought said irony was funny.
Glad the show was a popular one. I didn't care for the show and didn't care for the characters although the actors did a good job portraying the sad bunch
It reminds me of Stephen King's "Misery".
Entire shift??😂😂
An amazing series and what an incredible and haunting story it truly was 🌈🌈🥹🥹😢😢
I'd never carry on the way Martha did, but I did found myself empathising with her abit, having recently been in a relationship with a covert narcissist, who never felt the way I did for her
Very 😊 good
ONLY 5yr order???? We can get them indefinitely in America!! 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ This is ridiculous!!
This is not the true story it’s click bait. It’s just a blow by blow account of the Netflix series
