Fun fact: The scene where Mystique walks out the elevator impersonating Bobby had to be filmed using a very complicated split screen effect. It was not until after they had the shot that actor Shawn Ashmore thought to mention he had an identical twin brother.
    The crew were not pleased.

Something you might be interested to know is that Stan Lee originally wrote the X-Men as an allegory for the civil rights movement.
ETA: Correction, it was actually Chris Claremont who created the X-Men. See the below correction.

You're both kind of right? Stan Lee did create the X-Men, but Chris Claremont did a lot of their deeper stories, basically revitalizing them in the 70s, and I think worked on the series longer than anyone else, taking them to where they're mostly known as today.

Mutants in Marvel Comics has always been a metaphor for anyone who has be discriminated against or put down for being different. You can insert any group you want, LGBTQ, minority groups, or just Geeks. It lets Marvel discuss discrimination without naming names. So in a way, we can all be mutants. People have be complaining that X-Men 97 was woke. BUT X-Men has been woke from the beginning.

  • @Lillian_Ashcroft

FYI I love that the writer and director of The X-men movies is a bisexual man because Stan Lee was very clear on multiple occasions that X-men is meant to be a metaphor for social justice for LGBT+ and other sexual minorities and yes racial minorities to a degree but the metaphor based on how the X-gene works is much more obviously applicable to LGBT+ people. And yes wolverine was worried about rogue as a young girl because in the Novel-Version of the first X-men movie Rogue was being held by 3 truckers not just one and yes they had evil lewd intentions toward her but Wolverine saved her. I figure this does not count as spoilers it only relates to Novel-Version of the first film.

The Marvel world is a bit weird. Heroes like the Avengers, who've gained powers from unnatural ways (accident, technology, science experiment) are celebrated by the public. But Mutants, who've gained their abilities naturally (through their genes), are hated by humans.

    • @corvus1970
      @corvus1970 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Yup. In the comics, people who have gained their powers through "unnatural" means are often called "mutates," and you are correct: They tend to have broad acceptance, like Captain America, the Fantastic Four, and so on. Some others, however, like Hulk and, to a lesser degree, Spider-Man, tend to be feared or distrusted.

34:45 you may have missed it but Mystic sabotaged Cerebro. Jean Grey found the alteration, removed the "toxic" addition to Cerebro. That is why she was not injured like Charles was. He was affected by the sabotaged equipment.
36:10 in the comics Wolverine is in YELLOW SPANDEX. So that was a poke at the comics. You can also see it in the older X-Men cartoons.

Oh the laugh I just laughed. That was _really_ good. Thank you for that one.
"This dude looks like a personified wolf."
Despite a significant size advantage, a _lone_ Wolf will tend to shy away from a Wolverine. Wolverines are Mustelids, relatives of Badgers, Skunks, Minks, etc. They are extremely powerful for their size, and ferocious. They can kill prey many times their size, and far larger predators will at times decide that messing with a Wolverine's kill isn't worth the risk.

Hi, huge comic book nerd here. This question almost always comes up when someone reacts to this movie. Magneto controls metal by creating and manipulating magnetic fields. He''s able to "fly" by creating a magnetic field around his body which repels the magnetic field of the earth thus pushing him off the ground. Then by manipulating that magnetic field in exactly the right way he is able to push himself through the air in whatever directing he chooses. It's the same basic concept of how mag lev trains work except the character of Magneto along with many of the other X-Men, was created in 1963 by Stan "The Man" Lee which makes it much more impressive than it sounds since this technology hadn't been invented yet......OH! and Cyclops powers aren't lasers although that is a common belief even among comic fans. In the early issues of Uncanny X-Men it's explained that what Cyclops has is a force beam. It is a beam of energy that applies tremendous physical force to whatever it hits. So tearing a hole in the roof for example, was more like hitting it with a physical object like a wrecking ball.

Everyone associates the name "Wolverine" with wolves ... a wolverine is a wolverine. They're related to honey badgers. Way more vicious than wolves, they'll fight for almost no reason.
Also, they're quite small for such a vicious animal, so the comic book character is supposed to be 5'3 but then they cast Hugh Jackman who's way taller than that.

The trilogy is a good call Emme. It's not the best interpretation of the comics but I think myself and a lot of people have been unfairly tough on them. Cinepals recently did new reactions on the X-Men movies and it's been nice to see their enthusiasm and takes on it. I've seen a bunch of reactors go in fully blind on X-Men 97 and they get by just fine. The show is self referential, but it also explains whatever it needs to. The original was made in 1992 but it was an adaptation for kids, influenced by network standards of censorship and guidelines.
Honestly there was so much going on in the old show that it was a lot to wrap my head around. It was full of unusual things. It was a lot of content too. There was also a 1994 Spider-Man series that I liked even more! It crossed over with the X-Men series at one point. That pilot episode and many after had me going ballistic with enthusiasm and hype. I mostly read Spider-Man comics as a kid and it was like a dream seeing it adapted in a mostly faithful way. I had a hard time deciding which was better. For me I had to have both. They helped build my love for Marvel.

The original X-Men comics were really a commentary on discrimination against certain groups in the real world - anyone who is different than the "mainstream". That problem still exists today. You might recognize the main characters as Gandalf from the LOTR and Captain Picard from Star Trek (Ian Mckellen and Patrick Stewart).

X-Men movies are 5% faithful to the comics.
X-Men '97, the animated show, is roughly 50% faithful to the original comics.
They are *WILDLY* different from each other.
So, if your plan was to watch this so you'd know something about the X-Men... you couldn't have made a worse choice. 😅
It will only confuse you further and create *A MILLION* of misconceptions that you'll have trouble erasing from your mind once you start X-Men '97. 😁

The way these characters are portrayed in these original movies are very different than the way they are portrayed in X-Men 97 (and the original X-Men The Animated series). These movies will give you basic understanding of the concepts and characters but some of them are portrayed very differently.

Late to the party, I know, but I will just let you know now, that the live action movies are drastically different from the comics. X-men '97 follows the lore of the original X-men cartoon, and subsequently the 90's comics. So apart from some character names and their powers (with the exception of Rogue who has some extra powers that she kept permanently), X-men '97 is going to be completely different.

You need more than some sense of the characters if you expect not to be lost when they intermingle with the MCU so if you’re gonna react to them you need to react to all of them, especially since you’re watching the MCU. They’re all connected and continue off of each other. I recommend watching them in release order because most of them have end credits scenes that lead to the next movie so if you change the order around you it might mess up the flow of some of them.

You should also watch the original X-Men cartoon... X-Men: The Animated Series, from 1992-1997, as the new X-Men '97 is a continuation of that series! But yes, watch as many of these X-Men movies as you can ... though in my opinion, the last X-Men movie (Dark Pheonix) is a real dud worth skipping... then again, some people liked it!

Magneto is one of my favorite villains, b/c from his point of view, he's a survivor of one holocaust, fighting to prevent a SECOND (mutant) holocaust. You cant blame him. If **I** survived a concentration camp, I might build an army and start a war before I let them they put me back in another one.
Also, Magneto's war of human vs mutant may actually happen, in which case, he and Charles will be ALLIES and generals, so it's in their best interest to keep each other alive, if that happens. My favorite interaction in the movie is the police standoff between the two leaders
"Why dont you come out where I can see you, Charles. Let them pass that law, and you'll be in a cage with number burned into your forhead."
"It wont be that way, Eric."
"Then why dont you kill me. And find out."
"Hnerhh. Afraid to make sacrifices, Charles. That's what makes you weak."
And by "sacrifice" Magneto means sacrificing HIMSELF. That's committment to a cause. He's right. And he's wrong.

The Bryan Singer Fox X-Men films have very little in common with X-Men '97.
X-Men '97 is faithful to the comics source material. Singer was mostly faithful to Hugh Jackman's abs.

If you want to watch X-Men 97 you really need to watch the X-Men Animated Series (1992-1997) first because 97 is a direct sequel to it, like it literally picks up from the last episode. There are many characters that are in the animated series that are not in the movies and vice-versa. Watching the movies will only partially prep you for X-Men 97.

The genius of X-Men 97 is that it kind of Prequel Star-Wars's the OG content but doesn't submit to the whim of George Lucas. Can't wait to watch the X-Men97' reactions here. Honestly.... a proper order might have been 97' and then the movies and the OG cartoon in measured order. That'd be wild honestly.

Continuity is not like Marvel, lots of inconsistencies between characters in the movies. Fox movies had the rights to certain characters (X-Men) like Sony had Spider-Man, but Marvel bought out Fox recently, so now they can interact as in the comics, many thing happen between characters.
Magneto and Toad you have seen before (Gandalf and Darth Maul). Have a fun journey to catch up!

Everyone likes to pretend they would be perfectly fine being neighbors with people who could control minds, walk/see through walls, or morph into other people. The reality is both sides kind of have a point and it's a complex situation. The Senator and Magneto are both extremists however. Xavier represents the rational middle ground. He understands why humans would be afraid and defends them from Magneto but still fights for mutant rights in his own way.

Welcome to the X-Men. I’d been reading the X-Men comics for nearly 20 years when this movie came out, and it was so exciting to see these characters brought to the big screen so well. Although they rearranged the characters’ backstories to make them fit into one story (eg Bobby was one of the original X-Men, and Rogue had started off as a supervillain) it all came together very well. The scene at the end where a badly wounded Logan chooses to give his healing factor to save Rogue’s life was taken straight from the comics, and it really made me happy to see.
Anywho, glad you liked the movie as well. Thanks for sharing your reaction 😊. If you choose to watch more of these, you’ll find that the quality can vary a lot, from excellent to sufficiently entertaining to … well … I personally was disappointed. Also, they’re a lot less concerned with maintaining a cohesive narrative than the Marvel movies. Characters who died in one movie might be alive in the next with no explanation given, for example. Best not to think about it too much..

I like the movie, but it really misses the intended mark, just as its source material does. In the opening scene with Jean Grey, Senator Kelly is completely right. It's naïve to say that "laws and morals" are what's keeping a woman who can walk through walls from going wherever she pleases. The very existence of the Brotherhood of Mutants underscores the inherent danger of unchecked mutant abilities-this issue is more akin to the firearms debate than the civil rights debate.
Consider the incidents involving mutants: Scott Summers accidentally tore a hole in a train station roof with his optic blasts; Anna Marie nearly killed her boyfriend by simply touching him; Professor Xavier has the power to _control people's minds._ These are not ordinary civil rights concerns; political minorities can't control the weather, explode people with a thought, or shoot lasers from their eyes. They can't throw Buicks around or shrug off bullets.
The argument for mutant registration isn't about discrimination; it's about public safety. Just as society has regulations for driving, owning firearms, and other potentially dangerous activities, it is only sane to call for some form of oversight when dealing with individuals who possess such extraordinary and potentially destructive powers. While it's important to protect the rights of all individuals, the conversation around mutants must also address the unique risks their abilities pose to society.
We require people to have licenses for various potentially dangerous activities, like owning a firearm, driving a car, or flying a plane. These aren't random and meaningless; these licenses signify that the person has shown themselves to be responsible with the power they're wielding. If they aren't, there is a clear system in place to address that. If a drunk driver runs over someone, you don't sue the car manufacturer or the state that issued the license. You hold the person behind the wheel accountable because they violated the agreement inherent and implicit in the license.
That Kelly in the movie and all too many characters in the comics take that and go into mustache-twirling Boris Badinov territory doesn't take away from the initial argument.
That isn't to say there are any easy answers. There really aren't. While comparing mutants to firearms or vehicles provides a useful framework, it falls short in fully capturing the ethical and practical complexities. Unlike inanimate objects, mutants are sentient beings with personal autonomy and rights. Balancing these rights with public safety is inherently challenging. As such, there is no form of mutant registration I can imagine that would end well for anyone. Yet _that_ is the debate, not civil rights.
The debate is how we can protect people who present a very clear and very present danger to anyone and everyone around them. How do we protect both without protecting one at the expense of the other? I don't know, but I think that'd be a more interesting movie topic than trying to cram the civil rights debate in where it doesn't fit.
In summary, while this movie and the "X-Men" franchise in general touch on themes of discrimination and fear, the alignment with the civil rights movement is ill-fitting to the point of being invalid. The unique dangers posed by mutant abilities require a different framework for discussion, one that addresses both safety and rights in a more nuanced manner. This shift in focus could lead to richer, more relevant storytelling that better reflects the complexities of the issue.

They don't exactly spell it out in the movie, but Wolverine is dying after giving Rogue his powers, because his healing factor works almost immediately on small injuries, but larger injuries it kinda just holds him together, to stop bleeding, etc, and they take longer to fully heal. When he gives her his power he kinda falls apart from all the wounds Sabertooth gave him. Also he knew going in that this could happen, he can probably still feel them all healing.
