  • Community is very important to us at Collecting Cars, we love meeting new people and hearing their stories, it’s why we love our Coffee Run events so much.
    James recently met Alex Dainty through a shared love for the Alpine A110. Alex discusses what driving means to him and tells us how his relationship with cars has evolved since he was forced into using hand controls.
    Thank you Alex for sharing your story. If you have an interesting car or story to tell please get in touch.

    Just saw this car at Dunstable Downs visitor centre.
    It looks amazing, I have always liked the Alpine shape and with the extras and this colour schemes it's perfect. The green even on a dull day Sat 4th March 23, looks fantastic. Apparently more intelligent people drive green cars, I have had two, but currently Tanzanite blue!
    I must admit, for a moment I thought what AH has parked their flash car in a disabled space......then saw the reg, the window sticker and finally the blue badge.
    Googled the car when home and watched this video. It's difficult to make a positive after such a horrible accident but I can see how a car like this gives you freedom and enjoyment and absolute equality on the road.
    I hope to see you and the car out and about on the roads.
    I wish I had taken some photos.
    Happy motoring.

    I am also an amputee and am considering the A110 (among other sports cars -- FINALLY). Man, I would love to talk to Alex about his car journey, and amp driving life, in general. I'm moving from a full-size Dodge Ram with twist-grip/push style controls that I've been using for the better part of 20 years, and am considering steering wheel ring controls for the next vehicle in order to keep both hands on the wheel. I'm wondering how Alex's push/pull setup does with the paddle shifters and other stalk usage. My biggest issue right now with my current setup is activating the turn signals whilst still needing to throttle and/or brake (it's a left-hand drive vehicle with left side controls). This was an awesome video to come across. Thanks for covering Alex and his story!

    Re: hand controls, has anyone ever adapted motorcycle type controls instead of a round steering wheel?
    You'd have gas, clutch and brake on the bars, only gear shift left to modify...
    Cheers!

I've been salivating at the lifeA110 parts & only wished we could get the same tune in Oz. I bought an Australian premier edition sight unseen & absolutely love the car. Hats off to you

    Always wondered how hand controls work! Do you still use the paddles or is that an input too many?

    • @leglessAlex
      @leglessAlex ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For these hand controls it’s one input too many. However, there’s a different style with what’s called a ring accelerator, and that allows you to have two hands on the wheel and use the paddles. It’s what a lot of disabled racing drivers use. I’ve been thinking about switching, but it would be expensive and pretty much learning to drive all over again!

    That looks lovely! You moved on from Lotus? Any reasons why? You must miss the noise!

    • @leglessAlex
      @leglessAlex ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There were loads of reasons for it, but it came down to the fact that in my eyes, the Evora wasn't a 'special' car, and this is. It did make a fantastic noise that's true, but it was heavy (1,400kg), the gearbox wasn't amazing, the seating position wasn't great and it needed at least 100bhp more. I drove it 32,000 miles in two years and haven't missed it at all since I sold it. these are also all the same reasons I'm not going to bother to get an Emira, although that will undoubtedly be a good car.
