Trip to Penukonda Fort, Anantapur District, Andhra Pradesh

Penukonda fort is at the heart of the second capital of Vijaynagar empire. Penukonda is located at a distance of around 142 from Bangalore, 79 km from Anantpur , 436 km from Hyderabad, 51 km from Lepakshi. After the defeat of Vijaynagar empire in the battle of Talikota during the time of Ramaraya, they retreated and started to rule from Penukonda. Apart from the fort there is hardly any sign of once a capital of a kingdom here in Penukonda. The fort area is huge and also covers large area of hills. At the entrance of the fort is a huge stone gate. A little walk would take you to Gagan mahal. This small but nice palace was built during the reign of Vijaynagar emperor Krishna Deva Raya. A royal court dancer Gangamma made it her home and used to perform for royal functions. Further walk will take you through another gate with no doors which opens up to a huge lake. The shore of the lake has been developed for tourism with sitting arrangements and trees. There is huge shiva statue at the base of the hills. An extended walk way has been constructed but that is not open to tourists yet. From here one could see the walls of the fort at the top of the hills.
I have been told that one has to trek 6 km to reach the top of the fort. I trekked little but could not do the complete trek due to limited time. Trekking here through rocky and aired region would be a good experience. Otherwise there is a road which goes to the top of the fort. In 2012 we saw this road was under construction and now in 2021 it is still not complete. It is still a mud road and car cannot travel. While walking on this road you could see a trekking path through stones to the top of the fort.
