  • The New World of Superduke Setup for street, track, and race - KTM 1290/1390 Super Duke R, RR, EVO - Part I
    There is a new world of setup now, for our favorite Gen3 Superduke 1290 - and for the new Gen4 Superduke 1390! Learn about new bar position options, new triple clamp offset choices, new ideas on rear ride height, the value of getting your knee on the ground for bike control and confidence, and of course the benefits of creating more swingarm angle and anti-squat WITHOUT adding too much rear ride height.
    Thinking outside the box this winter changed my approach for setup on the Superduke for past few years. Using the new Superclamp from Superduked.com, coming down from such high settings for the rear, using different bar mount positions, fitting Ohlins FKR cartridges into our WP forks, and having my body closer to the pavement due to now being able to run lower rear ride heights - all of these changes are helping redefine, and renew, our good ole Superduke Gen3.
    And let’s not forget the new Gen4 1390. All of these new changes also apply to the Gen4 because chassis wise the two bikes are the same.

    I watch a lot of American drag car videos, they move the 4 link bars upwards to increase the angle so tyres drive axel under the car and raise the rear ride height. They control this with the shock rebound damping.
    Seems common to call it extending or more extension.

    Rotating the bar further towards you till the bar-ends start drooping down really helps freeing up wrist mobility, it does look like you can rotate it further back.
    I do that on my naked zx10R trackbike and i stole the idea from someone on a 1290SD, looking from behind the bike you could really see the bar-ends pointing downwards.

    I've an MT09SP and am 6'3" and can scrape the hero blobs on the pegs but can't put the knee down due to the height adjustment from adjusting the rear suspension and the MT09 having a crap rider positioning that makes moving around on it difficult.

    Question GoGo: Using the ride height tool, my bike is at 315mm now, and I'm using +3 offset. I believe I'm at 101mm trail. I'd like to lower the shock another 2.5 turns to make it 310mm rear ride height. Which offset should I use to get to, say, 101, 100, 99, or 98mm trail? Note: 16/40-114 gears and chain. Thanks. The video is awesome! 🙂

    • @superduked33
      @superduked33  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Easy math my friend. 5mm of rear ride height = 1mm of trail.
      Same rule for the front. 5mm of fork height = 1mm of trail.
      So you lost 1mm of trail when you shortened your shock. Add 1mm with a +4 and your trail is what it was. I don’t have charts in front of me right now so I’m going by your words that you had 101mm

  • @Spartan11S

    Don't you think alot of this set up work is due to trying to dial it in on Michelins? I know you like them. But there's no high level championship runs them. (Motogp aren't the same tyre, wr can ignore them) But AMA. BSB. Here in UK a few Regional Superbike guys tried then and ditched then immediately. Again it may be down to cooler ambient temps etc. But I can't help but feel alot of the clamps and work is to get that bike working on those tyres.
    It would be very interesting to get a set of Pirelli SC slicks. Try and get close to tyre sizes/diameters etc obviously to match the current set up work and geo. And see any difference in lap times and feel.

    • @Spartan11S
      @Spartan11S 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also. Andi Burgschagscher or however you spell it. Races the SD without the alterations and McWillians was the lead development test rider! So again maybe the tyres are the cause of the need to change the geo so much? Worth exploring and discussing, no?

    • @Lumpys_Garage
      @Lumpys_Garage 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nope. Tried several tires. Geometry is fine, as is the electronic suspension till you go way faster. The difference when set up better is crazy. You don’t know until you’ve ridden it.

    • @superduked33
      @superduked33  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I appreciate your thinking and opinion. Sincerely. My buddy Gavin, who also races a Superduke in our series, runs Pirelli. We go back and forth with data all the time. He seems to make it his life's work to NOT follow my advice on just about everything I suggest. I appreciate that too, because its better to think independently - especially when you are competing. And doing it this way expands the testing pool, creates more opportunities to learn and to discover even better ideas. Having said all that, Gavin just bought a Superclamp from me yesterday afternoon (no bs), after deciding to abandon his IMA triple clamps and BMW front end with clip-ons. He has always run the Superlink, and usually runs slightly lower rear heights than me (but this is due to the fact that the Pirelli rear tire that he uses is much taller than the 200/55 Michelin that I use). Ultimately Gavin's rear height has coincidentally ended up almost identical to mine (when you factor in his taller rear tire).
      Another interesting point to consider is my competition, who are almost ALL on Pirelli tires. A few on Dunlop too. I entered seven races this past weekend. Won six of them, took second in the other by .2 seconds.
      On Jeremy McWilliams, man I love that guy. Hope to meet him one day. I raced Laguna in AHRMA six days after he did with the AMA last summer. I chased Stefano Mesa turning laps under Jeremy's pole qualifying times in the Hooligan class. And my laptimes in AHRMA were well inside top 10 in the AMA Supersport class. So I don't think the Michelins that I race are as bad as you suggest. Or as different quite honestly.
      I don't know Andi Burg_ _ _ _ (can't spell either), or the series that he runs. I'm pretty confident he and his bike would benefit greatly from some Superduked parts. But that's just my opinion, and it's worth exactly what you paid for it. :)

    • @Spartan11S
      @Spartan11S 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@superduked33 Great reply. And lots of info there we'd not know about. But my only view was. It's quite interesting that all the SD's you've had and raced. From the 07 SDR right through every model. Has needed triple clamps and geo changes. Now linkages. That's a lot of different bikes through many years of development. Like i mentioned, KTM engineers, McWilliams testing them. But KTM changed and developed the bikes but when you get them. You do the same changes to every model and more to chassis geo. But the common theme is you run Michelins.
      I'm posting from my 2nd channel here as I've lost acess to my original. I raced a SD here in UK to 3rd in a national championship against ohlins shod GSXR750's etc. Broke lap record etc. Before moving to SS600. So know how they feel and the limitations. And I did buy the Nichols clamp, which yeah raised the front. But also brought other issues with it. As the bike regained trail and allowed use of a larger rear but overall was way to high.
      The Holigan times aren't really comparable man. We both know they're not in any way Hooligan bikes. And it's not competing apples with apples when you're on a 180bhp SDR. Can you imagine if the Holigan series was how it should be. Real Hooligan bikes. SD. MT10. That would be cool.
      Anyway it was just to note. I found it interesting all the bikes need changed but you ran Michelins on all of them. There's no malice.
      You put out great detailed info. And for free. No other team would give that out and show the workings.
      It would be good to see some full race onboards. Be able to see how it turns. Also even better. Some track pics. To see how the bike look loaded and in the turn.

      @@Spartan11S I'm thinking KTM is designing the Super Duke to be a street fighter for "everyone", intended for the street. KTM take pride in the fact that it is designed as an streetfighter from bottom up in their marketing, and not as an hybrid race bike with "only" wide bars. Design = geometry and looks right? I'm not sure what an ideal streetfighter feeling should be, but I reckon it is not the same as track set up sport bike. This is why (my opinion) the bike needs more aggressive track oriented set up to be faster around a track and less wheelie prone (KTM do a lot of wheelies in their marketing), and the blame is not the Michelins. Both the RR version and the 1390 is delivered with Michelin street rubber, and with michelin slicks on press release/testing 😁

      @@superduked33 Let me rephrase that. 100mm of ground trail at 24degr rake is actually less stable than 100mm of ground trail at 23 degr rake.

    • @superduked33
      @superduked33  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I want to tell you how much I appreciate your contributions here @rickarderiksen4262 . I am aware and conscious of how we can reach the same ultimate trail number, but with different rakes. But I have to admit you are making me think harder on this subject. I think it can be misleading, confusing, even time-wasting to get too hung up on "numbers" considering chassis attitude and setup. Especially those introduced online, in forums, and sometimes by folks who don't even ride. But, having said that, I think it can also be critically valuable to understand the nuances behind these numbers. Technical points like this can be hard to discuss, even with pros in top series sometimes, I think because this depth of knowledge is rare. So sometimes I rely on my own real world experiences instead. I will admit that I have not tested the differences between the two in your example. Only read about them. And to be honest, I have read and been told a lot of things about setup that are not true, and are sometimes even 180 degrees from right. So my next time on track I plan to test exactly this. Specifically because of your comment above. That's how much I value new ideas, different opinions, and learning opportunities like the one you created here. If I feel a difference, I will make a video about exactly this. Thank you again @rickarderiksen4262

      @@superduked33 I think you understand that the 100mm is just for an example.
      You have the Motospec aswell. If you compare the RC8 to the Superduke you´ll see some pretty interesting differences.
      This mignt not be a conversation that suits a comment field the best. :)
      But it´s a matter of trigonometry. Loads, levers and trying to get all the acting forces down on a paper/excel-sheet and seeing what they do.
      My numbers may very well be wrong about this. But without calculating for the extra load added to the front wheel, a trail of 100mm 25degr is about 4% more stable than if it 100mm at 27degr.
      Funny thing, if we do the same math for 90mm the difference is only 3%.
      So trail is only a reference for other things.
      I´ve gone to 22,x degr rake and ~92mm trail on my RC8. And I´m not sure that I´m completely satisfied.
      Oh, and ground trail and normal trail are two different things. Stop using ground trail if you are changing rake angles.
