I like how the Manager of the Continental in Rome asked John if he came to kill the Pope. That scene along with this scene if it would have played out, could’ve opened up a larger and more historical connection with the Continental, the High Table and even the Papacy (Catholic Church). That would’ve been an epic expansion on the franchise.
There are a lot of deep dark secrets that are being exposed in this series. This is not fiction. Other than some assassin that can kill the whole world trying to kill him. I watch this movie with a very different eye than when I first saw it.

He gives the right amount of respect, but you can tell. That John wasn't all that pleased to be around the guy. It was a very well done. A lot going on with few words.
I think this is John going to a power similar to the High Table, The Church, and both asking for permission to complete his task AND asking for assistance. He is given permission to, but it’s pretty clear to John that The Church will not help him kill a head member of the High Table. This really should be the only way this scene makes sense and it’s great world building in such a short timeframe if that’s what this is.

There is actually a "pre-sin confession" in the Church. It's Saint Leo's Absolution if I'm not mistaken. It's usually for soldiers who are pretty sure that thier gonna die in battle.
It would be interesting if the High Table was the modern iteration of the Avignon Papacy. That might explain why the High Table seems to be centered in France, and why they’d have a connection with the historical ‘Assassins’. After all, Franks (the French) did most of the conquering and fighting during the First Crusade.
It really would have been interesting if this scene had appeared in the movie, even more so, considering that the relationship between the criminal underworld and the Catholic and Orthodox Church is curious, it gives a lot of scope for John Wick's lore.

I like how the reaction of the lady after she checks out John from her tablet, that subtle hint of "oh shit it's HIM, why is he here" on her face while trying to keep her composure. It's these small nuggets sprinkled all over the films that tickles your curiosity about John and the world he is in.
Now that all the parties are involved in part 4, I am wondering if this scene has any deeper meaning later on. Maybe Vatican and the pope is another power player in the background which is not unlikely considering how things go upfront have a much deeper root in the background in J.W. series.
It could just be John was just asking permission to go after his target while inside the holy city, and did so by giving the name of the person he was working for. I imagine he still would have gone after her without that permission, but whatever ties the Vatican has with the high table and continental would have caused John to be excomunicated from their order soon after the death of his target (about halfway through JW 2).

wick needed to the pope because pope is member of table, also this mission is to remove a member of table. this concludes that a member of the table agreed to this mission so john will not face table consequenses from other member. he has his back covered. although later santino issued manhunt, it was not from the table itself. this proof the table is actually in good standing with john up until the mission.

Pacing-wise, this makes a ton of sense to cut. It's already a pretty hefty stretch between the opening action sequence and the catacombs shootout. Cool concept, but unnecessary.

I read the comments and only some of you mentioned that's Mosca, the hitman from The Godfather part III, played by Mario Donatone (9 June 1933 - 14 April 2020). This scene just got even more awesome plot twist :)

Pacing-wise, this makes a ton of sense to cut. It's already a pretty hefty stretch between the opening action sequence and the catacombs shootout. Cool concept, but unnecessary.
