For me: DW1: The original DW2: The one who laid the foundations and idea of the popular and classic saga DW3: The bases already polished and improved DW4: The one that consolidated the saga in terms of classic voices and game system DW5: Improvement of the story from the point of view of each character. DW6: A setback in the saga... DW7: A redemption of the saga with improved scenes and attacks DW8: An incredible experience with unique attacks, hypothetical routes and better historical point of view DW9: Another setback in the saga... I hope DW Origins don't disappoint...
All are great, played all Musou games on psp and 8 on pc, always wanted to play 9. I don't care about any complaints from people who don't enjoy the game about 9, for me collecting The whole thing and leveling up all the characters to level 99 is the real fun. Similar to SRW, nowadays people play SRW with a book and a pile of notes next to them. As for me, I still play it like when I first learned about SRW, don't join any crap groups and more importantly don't read any books from anyone, just do random things myself in game with the most unique lineups.
Out of all the Dynasty Warriors series, I didn't really like 4 because they add random generals in the battles sometimes, They had Dian Wei in Battle of Chi Bi when it's a fact he died way before that battle happened.
I think its okay for what if story, like some people wonder what if Zhuge Liang stayed alive after Wu Zhang Plains, they added a little cinema where he died peacefully after Shu achieved its peace, its a nice touch. With enough playtime I think people will know that Zhuge Liang passed away during the battle of Wu Zhang plains. Or, what if Wei managed to prevent fire+wind attack from allied Shu and Wu during the battle of Chibi, so many other interesting What Ifs
I've played 4,5,6 & 8. But i will not include 5 because i played it long time ago and i also only play Zhao Yun Dynasty Warrior 4 Pros: -Gameplay is simple, unlike modern dw. Its simplistic but not too plain. -I love how the character and weapon model are made to look as realistic as possible. I like Sun Jian and Yuan Shao with head armor in this. I hate the later model, they look too goofy to me. -Game is hard, your army will be wipeout in the hardest difficulty no matter what u do. Cons: -No cons, this game is just the good ol dynasty warriors gameplay. Dynasty Warrior 6 Pros: -Renbu system. I like this addition. It add some progression in gameplay. It also add some kind of difficulty to it. -Different new moveset. Roll, guard+square, guard+triangle. Adds more diversity to the gameplay. -Mosou mode focus more on 1 officer. U really invest in this officer story rather than changing officer in each stage. -Skill tree. Adds more depth to gameplay. -New model. Most of them are fine. I really like Zhao Yun model the most in this than any DW. Cons -They change most of the officer weapon. I hate how they change Xiahou Dun weapon to a slow blunt weapon. But i like Machao sword, it fits him perfectly. I also dont mind new Lubu Weapon. -Timed objective. I hate timed event in games. Let me just play my game in peace. Dynasty Warrior 8 Pros: -They combine what makes dw good into one package. This game is just a complete package. -Make each officer shine with their uniqueness. They reuse the best design of older title. Lu Bu with halberd, Xiahou yuan is a master bowman, beardless Liu Bei, devilish looks Cao Cao. -Plenty of new character. They add every Guan Yu children, Lu Bu daughter, Xiahou Yuan son. They made lots of generic character to a playable character with unique model. -Adds plenty of new story branch. Like a lot. They add a new kingdom called Jin kingdom. -Lots of QOL improvement. -I like the modern looks of each officer. -Cool cinematics. A modern not so cringey cinematics like the older titles. Just look at the cinematic stage of when Cao Cao run from Lu Bu, damn that thing look cool as heck. Cons: -While i like the new flashy move, it made each officer too op and make the game much easier. 1000 kill seems doable while in the old games, 1000 kill is like a highest achievement. -Old game sure is a button mash but this game is like 200% button mash. U are a one man army.

Miss when these games were challenging and all characters played uniquely and there was an actual sense of accomplishment 100%ing the game and playing hardee difficulties. Now, Dynasty Warriors has become what haters criticized it for. A mindless button masher. Dynasty Warriors 3 and 4 were the best ones btw. DW5 was okay, but ai started going down hill and peons became absolute fodder and it all went downhill from there
I agree that destiny mode was more like it but it was too short and building characters from scratch over and over is not fun for me especially after getting all the costumes and doing it so many times. And the rest of the game again is way too easy so it just became boring for me. One thing I think really killed 5XL for me is that there is no 5th weapons, and 4th weapons were already by far the easiest to unlock among the PS2 DW games. (Well, 3-5) The game was just devoid of challenge all around which is an attractive aspect of 3 and 4 to me. It felt good unlocking all 5ths on Very Hard/Expert on 3 and 4. 5 and 5XL were an absolute cakewalk in comparison
Yeah they ruined it when they cloned movesets and tried to make it fancy. The simplest of movesets in 3 made it effective but also challenging on harder difficulties
I never play DW3 before. DW4 is harder (and i hate when the game becomes hard). DW5 is okay, but a lot better and less harder than 4. That's why i like this DW5 series.
Well yeah... Every CoD game is identical, every Street Fighter is Identical, every Yakuza title is identical, etc. You have to play these games to really see the differences. Like up until DW5, you couldnt move the camera lmao.

My favourite is Dw5 extreme legends. In base game, as you pointed, peons are like fodder. But in destiny mode, both ally or enemy, they're great.
