This is my most anticipated scene. I still remember my image of the change: Jessica seeing herself in a blackened room where she was a brown gaseous form, turning into white-blue to signify the change as she connects with the Reverend Mother and Alia. If it shows up in the film, I can't wait to see what Denis saw when reading it

    • @justinklenk
      @justinklenk ปีที่แล้ว +4

Dude, that would be a visually PERFECT image: the deep black room - with brown, suspended features of gas (or dust or vapor or spice or smoke) - with an exquisitely textured, in-motion, soul-interpreting visage of Jessica... like a state of the art visualization of Prcs.Leia in her hologram, only super nifty and artsy and real, _real_ trippy-deep, like some Alex Grey shit, in some kind of heightened ayahuasca experience intake of her own being and becoming... Very clear, very real, very immaculate, in a turning perspective. Yeah... That would be a proper beat on that!
We'll see. Looking forward to it... Always too long!

@@justinklenk damn, imagine Alex Grey type imagery for Dune? That'd be wild. The other thing I'm excited to see is the passing of memories from Ramallo to Jessica. That image of their foreheads touching each other was so overwhelming

The book's description of Paul's visions of waves of time, or seeing Chani's body in multiple positions all at once, or rewinding+simulating the sand avalanche, or seeing the branching/converging ornithopter trajectories in the sandstorm, all were completely unrepresented with only pure cinematic cuts to normal shots, albeit with lens flares to communicate it being part of the Sight.

I am wondering how will they portray 'a place where no woman dare to look' during Jessica's trance. Will they even include it? They can visually present that as a door but Jessica is afraid to walk in. That would pay off beautifully when Paul finally takes water of life scene and decides to walk through that door. I have doubts about how Denis will carry out this scene. His approach in the first film was very realistic, trying not to expose too much fantasy and leaving the mystical side to the viewer's imagination. The visions and the Bene Gesserit scenes in Dune 1 were executed simply, without major effects or exaggerations. I think we might run into something similar in Part 2.

When I saw it in theaters (spoilers) I had a thought that one of the past reverend mothers must have gone native or something, like was either a Freman taken under the wing of a BG and became a Reverand Mother, or one who just got taken in by the Freman culture and truly believed the "prophecy." Like a drop of something poisoning the well, all the ones who came after were completely convinced the Mahdi was real. Could explain why Jessica went so 180 in the movie. I get she could have been just really hamming up the "mother of the mahdi" thing to protect Paul, but the way JF played it at times it seemed like she really believed Paul was the prophet and not just a potential KH protected by the Freman. I couldn't imagine her telling him to drink the water of life after literally just telling him it's lethal to men unless she 100% believed he was the one. Also couldn't picture her being pleased the Holy War was happening after seeing how upset Paul was unless it was part of the Mahdi freeing/punishing the universe or something. JF definitely masterfully blurred the line between spreading propaganda and genuinely believing prophecy. Alia as well seeming to just fully believe in Paul from the moment the water of life affected her too. Could be her wanting power, setting herself up as priestess of the cult of muad'dib, using his importance for herself, almost like if the possession/abomination already happened and that's the Harkonnen part of her bloodline speaking. But wanting to protect Paul and wanting him to fulfill his destiny, almost sounds like she's been taken in by the Freman lore even more so. It just made me think, what if one Reverand Mother was more Freman than not? Sorry for the ramble :)

This is a great way to tell the 'Water of Life' sequence.
I love if it turns out this way, however...
I hope they leave the Sex scene part out, it's not that I don't mind two people having sex but I look at it like this.
Something as intimate as it is feels like it needs to be implied not shown.
The David Lynch Version showed the love they had without a full blown Sex Scene. Yet we still got the Great love they had for one another.
The only people who would even Want to see this is people who want to imagine themselves as Paul or Chani in that moment. That in itself is just wrong, but human nature draws us to those feelings and in turn it pulls us out of the story and distracts us for the rest of it.
I'm going to leave with: Titanic's Iconic part. Kate on the couch naked. Didn't need to be there, there could have been another way to tell that scene, but we still remember it as a scene in where we dared to be in that place at that time. From that point all we could think about was that scene from time to time.

If i were the writer for the script I wouln't put the water of life scene at least as a flashback and based on what they did with the dinner party wich was ommited I can expect they are going to start the movie after the two years gap, there is no way you can adapt a movie with that time jump, but just avoiding it and maybe flashback it with Paul's dreams.

They need to do The Water of Life scene something very much along the lines of what you described here. It would be a travesty otherwise.
It seems I keep saying stuff like this. You keep building up our anticipation of Part 2 to such an extent that Denis & Co could very possibly disappoint us bitterly if the final product doesn't deliver on an epic, grand scale.
If DV chooses an abbreviated, understated, scaled down adaptation of TWoL and once again cheats us out of a mind blowing experience just to reduce film run time compared to what was filmed, I'll be very pissed!
If he says "Yeah, we filmed an awesome Water of Life scene, but I decided it went too long and took up 20 minutes, so I cut it down to 2 minutes. I'm sure you won't mind" I'm going to be VERY angry!!

It's up to Denis and the team to deliver. The only expectations I encourage is that which either comes from the book or from the filmmakers themselves (some of which we haven't gotten to see). You'd have every right to be annoyed if it was anything less that.

At least Denis said that Part One was just introduction and worldbuilding for the world of Dune. Maybe he cut some of the scenes in Part One because he thought it would be too much for the first movie.
But I think the same, to see this scene like described in the video is what most people might expect after Paul and Jessica finally meeting the Fremen at the end of the first film.

The only thing I recall differently was that Jessica saw the reverned mother as a young woman, and she confirmed to her in vision that yes, it was her and how she was in her mind despite her body giving out. That is when she then tells Jessica how dangerous it was to undertake the right as pregnant and that she risked her child and coached her how to have Alia survive the ordeal. I think what was shown in the video would work though for the purposes of the movie. Sometimes keeping it more simple works there as opposed to trying to visually capture every moment from that scene. One of my most anticipated moments for the movie.

I really hope Dune 2 shows more gore. There is something so strange to me about Dune 1, in that, people are being massacred with swords and there is no spray or blood pooling. I am no gore fiend, I am actually quite squeamish(I actually momentarily passed out watching All is Quiet on the Western Front in the theatre, lol) but when I am watching Sci Fi or Fantasy, to fully immerse in the fiction, I need it to feel real. When the Sardaukar were being killed by Duncan there were just little red stains on their suits in the aftermath, and no visible blood when they were being killed.Duncan was absolutely butchering them too and they're wearing white uniforms so I mean, its a little jarring to me. Now compare that to that one scene in Blade Runner where David Dastmalchian's character is killed. It is so subtle, and yet, extremely disturbing in its depiction. It feels real. Villeneuve knows how to depict violence really well.
Imagine a scene where someone is killed in Dune and the blood spray comes out so dramatically that the shield stops it and lights up blue (Like the Atreides ships did when they were nuked from the sky, they exploded from within the shield due to the speed of the internal explosion) and so it all reverberates and falls down their body within their shield until it slowly pools around their body. That would be so disturbing but it would really stand out as a visually distinctive depiction of violence in Dune lore. Some poor sardaukar getting back sprayed with his own blood as it hits his shield, haha.

    • @secretsofdune
      @secretsofdune  ปีที่แล้ว +3

It is very weird to show the most brutal soldiers (Sardaukar) and not have those scenes accompanied with that kind of gore as you say. I think they tried to find their way around that by putting the red marks on their clothes and the one ritual before battle with the crucified prisoners.

@@secretsofdune A missed opportunity for sure. But I am only disapointed by it because Dune got so many other elements right. I have a good few other opinions on what could have been better too though, including a more subtle soundtrack and more colourful and strange looking garments and uniforms for a psychedelic, feudal, space empire 10,000 years in the future. If they are referencing ancient empires from earth as well as the feudal system of the middle ages and middle east, they should be a lot more colourful and obviously strange looking as a result of the context the narrative is set in(they are probably not going to have military uniforms that resemble those of today - Atreides soldiers look way too familiar to me)

If only. Oh, what I wouldn't give!
It's really sad to me, what they did to Chani in the second film.
It's an exciting movie. The first half builds so much promise for Chani and Paul that is then completely squandered by the modern mind-virus ("Chani don't need no man!"). It becomes so heavy handed by the end. After Paul drinks the water, her arc just goes completely off the rails into absurdist territory.
If they had just let her be as she was written... A faithful skeptic who comes to believe in Paul through his miraculous, prophetic steps through fate to deliver her people from evil occupation and oppression.
But this Chani doesn't seem to know anything... except that she doesn't like it! And pouts and bickers at the council and Paul and Jessica until the end of the movie where she, (NOT PAUL), rides off alone into the desert.
She's become that character in those ridiculous movies where the young person is the only one who knows something bad is about to happen. But none of the "big dumb adults" will listen to them.
In order for Dune: Messiah to feel like what it's *supposed* to feel like, Dune has to feel the way it originally written. A triumph for good vs evil with subtle undertones of possible impending danger. Not guaranteed danger like this! Where the audience feels assured that every victory for the good guys means one step closer to ultimate horror for the galaxy.
So *eeeeevery effing sceeene* where Paul is getting the followers hyped up for the next step, they just HAVE to cut to Chani's sour expression over and over. Beating the audience over the head. As if she had ANY better alternative whatsoever.
I mean what an IDIOT they made her into. Without Paul they all die horribly and the evil empire cracks on with business as usual. Rolling the barrels of spice right over their graves. Literal planetary genocide. Is she suggesting that's a better idea? No? So she's just dumb then? Great. Wonderful job.
No, they chose to make this film FEEL like Dune: Messiah. Which kills the hype for me. We're supposed to love Paul and his cause. Not fear him. We're supposed to ship Chani and Paul as the ultimate fated lovers. True love. Not a hook-up gone wrong. Her love is what allows him to carry the burden. It's lame. It's 2024 spoiled brat "people and relationships are disposable" social media culture. So they used Chani to change the tone of the whole story to the next chapter. In order to avoid criticism of supporting a "white savior trope ".
Sad. Such a technical masterpiece... wasted on a bad script. We will regret this era of stupidity if we survive it.
People need love and loyalty to handle the burden of life's suffering. Unless they are spoiled rotten. And addicted to vapid interests of vanity and social status.
It isn't PAUL that's bad. He's the ultimate good guy. Empowered to save the innocent and punish the greatest evil in existence. IT'S THE DOMINO EFFECT THAT LEADS TO DISASTER. Not HIM. Not his wishes or orders or actions.
The story of Jesus, the ultimate pacifist preaching love, eventually turned into the Crusades! And the Spanish Inquisition! What if the story of Jesus had a moment where he could see visions of the horrors carried out in his name? But knew it was the only way to save humanity? Sound familiar? Now what if they wrote Mary slapping him on the cross?? DUMB.
    Sad and dumb.

It's from a draft of the Dune script for Part One. Some of the deleted scenes which were filmed are also written in the Dune draft that aren't in the shooting script. It's authentic. It's a script by both Villeneuve and Roth, with revisions from Spaihts and it's just a draft, so it's technically a mixture of three writers.

@@secretsofdune Thank you for the response. I accept this script on the basis that it is a draft.
Taking for example the Prometheus script which Spaihts also co-wrote, it's also significantly more expository than the final film. But that was also the work of Lindelof so there's no real way to know who did what. But this Dune draft gives me an extremely strong sense that Villeneueve (or whoever brought the essentialist sensibility) did not yet cut through it to it's essence.

@@rubiksworld2170 I initially was intrigued by him and really, really, wanted to like Blade Runner 2042 seeing as the original BR is my favourite movie of all time. So it's not like I didn't do my best to like his work.
But BR2042 was garbage with an utterly forgettable soundtrack.
He has a certain style but unfortunately that style is cold, depressed, muted colours and still, cold, bare rooms. And mumbled dialogue with no emotion shown apart from either blank stares or screaming.
If a child were to depict their lives in such a way in pictures drawn for a psychologist then that child would be diagnosed as being autistic.
You can even see the 'genetic markers' to use a phrase from Dune, in Villeneuve's face, the way his upper eye ridges slope down betray that he is on a spectrum of some kind. High functioning Asperger's I am guessing. As such, he is blind to human warmth and actual relationships in movies. Everything in his films, including people, are just objects to be positioned here and there.
And worst of all, he thinks his infantile dialogue and ideas are superior to the source material. A case in point being the juvinile level writing that has Jessica telling Paul that his father 'didn't believe in revenge'. lol what a crock. Leto literally sent an attack team to blow up the Baron's spice stores on Geidi Prime in retaliation for the attempt on Paul's life. He also rebuffed the Baron's overtures and invoked 'kanly' which is basically feud and revenge cycle that goes all the way to the clan DNA.
A year after his first Dune movie, only Dune fans talk about it. Nobody remembers the music apart from the obligatory and ubiquitous 'wailing woman' that goes with every movies that involves some kind of ancient or primitive people since Gladiator came out. The rest of the soundtrack is just garbage. No dialogue, no scenes, nothing. The main cultured chewed that movie for two hours in the cinema like chewing gum and as soon as they left the theatre it lost it's flavour and they spat it out never to think of it again.
