I tried to get into the elevator trade, and I thought they'd be glad to have me, but they didn't want me. I sent out several resumes but I never heard a thing. I was in my 30's, a navy vet and had around 8 years background as a licensed factory electrician /mechanic who worked in plant maintenance. I had PLC, CNC and troubleshooting experience, plus some construction experience. Yeah well, as things turned out, I struck out on my own as an electrical service contractor with 3 helpers and I'm proud to say, I made a good career and a 6 figure income, with full credit for the office work to my wife Susie
My dad worked as an elevator constructor for over 30 years. It was a pretty interesting job he did. He was stressed sometimes but he got through it. He retired from being an elevator constructor, and now he works as an elevator inspector.
Thanks for this. I'm 28 be 29 on the 15th of this month. I've work paving asphalt for my dad for 6 years now. But I've been looking into this here. Thanks
I appreciate this video. I have a federal airframe and powerplant license and my son is working on getting his, too. Have you ever had elevator technicians with the airframe and powerplant license? I'll show him this video. They both pay over $45 an hour.
The "powerplant" part is for things like engine components and "airframe" think ribs, wings, ect. All aircraft need maintenance- helicopters, hot air balloons, airliners... You need an "A&P" to work on these commercially. Hence the name A&P Technicians. I'm actually thinking about getting an A&P cert. but recently learned about elevator mechanics. Getting your A&P cert most of the time is not an apprenticeship. So school's pretty pricey.
I just re-enlisted in the Marine Corp. I can go take classes and test to get licenses for free. Anything I should start doing? I have about 4 years before I will be able to get out?

Mechanical aptitude and spacial relations study book from your local library will prepare you for the mechanical portion of the test, the math part is just arithmetic, long division and multiplication, converting decimals to fractions, calculators aren’t allowed so you gotta be somewhat quick. And there’s a reading comprehension portion. 20 to 30 min. for 35 questions each portion. Neiep.org
Would anyone know if taking an electrical motor control and industrial control system classes would be helpful for anyone who wants to be an elevator mechanic?
Elevator Union up here in Pittsburgh make $52/hr and the head mechanic in charge makes $59/hr. Crazy how the wages change so much. I’d take a $30k/yr pay cut if I transferred down to Florida’s local. But on the other side of the state Phili makes $10 more than us cause cost of living.
Its more in providence. Im a helper right now im still going through elevator school. My family runs the elevator company thats how i got sponsored. Its $28 an hour as a helper… our highest adjuster is $80 an hour he even has 10% shares in our company. When that guy works double time he makes over 100$ an hour. Massachusetts and ri is just $ dude.
i really want to get into the union. I'm 21 years old and currently working for a residential elevator company any tips or advise to get into it because i heard it one of the hardest unions to get into
its really not hard, my best piece of advice is google what your local elevator union is. Call the hall and find out when the next aptitude test is, they typically are done every 2 years but unions vary, and then google how to prepare for the EIAT test and study your ass off until the day. You need at least a 70% score to even be considered BUT realistically you want to score in the 85% range to have many hopes to get in unless you have a friend getting in. Aside from that, Google what are the basic tools of the trade used in the industry and familiarize yourself with them. Good luck on your endeavors and I hope this helped.
@@thoemke2010 Is a elevator mechanic and an elevator installer and repair job the same thing??? And second if I get a elevator mechanic job do they make me do the 4 year training. And would that help for the installer and repair job. I am a bit confused
milplayer19 I took the aptitude test and no. The test is to see where you are at before even taking a interview then you will be put on a hiring list with a spot number based on how you scored. You can purchase a online program that prepares you for the aptitude test.
Hello thanks for this video. I was wondering if you could help clear up some confusion for me? Once you are interviewed and your apprenticeship program begins is the program directly through the union or does the first job that hires you know your apprentice and gives you apprenticeship type of work? I know the work can be seasonal so can your apprenticeship program take longer than fiver years if you’re not working the year straight through? Thanks!

The elevator business is well know for nepotism (hiring based on family ties) so here's a really snotty joke. How did you get a job in the elevator business? Answer: Because my mother went to bed with an elevator mechanic. Note, the actual language has been cleaned up so TH-cam doesn't delete my post.
