    • @alphafert608
      @alphafert608 4 ปีที่แล้ว +51

Depends, some things are more difficult & some easier. There is always a smell associated with frying & an air fryer doesn't seem to create much.
Sometimes it's just more convenient. I live alone & tossing something in the air fryer is often less hassle than filling a pot of oil, heating it, pouring it off then properly disposing it.
Some things like frozen wings take a long time (even in a convection oven) to get crispy yet like 12min in an air fryer. I also found I can get a bunch of wings, slow cook them in seasoned broth, dry then freeze & they reheat tender inside with a super crispy skin. I also reduce the broth & freeze in cubes to add in with hot sauce for the wings.
Like all kitchen gadgets they aren't necessary & somewhat situational.

Pro tip for air fryer, do "grilled" cheese sandwiches in them. Do it like a normal grilled cheese (preheat airfryer for 2-3 mins to 400). Pam or butter on the bread, 3-4 mins each side. One of my fav ways to make a "grilled" cheese now. After I flip it, I sprinkle a little cheese on top so it can scorch mmmmmm. I made one tonight with Kentucky ham, cheese and honey mustard dressing. SOOOO GOOD

I think the biggest advantage of air fryer chips is that you can be very choosy about the oil. For example, nobody (except the very rich possible) would consider using ghee for deep frying, but with only needing a tablespoon of oil, I always use ghee (and home made ghee at that) for my air fryer fries.

I'm on my second air fryer. Now using a Chefman Deluxe model which has a front loading door and stainless steel interior trays and a rotisserie basket for french fries. I make mine similarly, but I add a step that reduces cooking time by ten minutes. What I do after slicing and washing and drying the fries is put them on a microwave safe plate with a few squirts of Mazola from a food safe spray bottle and nuke them on high for 4 to 5 minutes. Then I load them into the air fryer at 400 F and they're done in 15 minutes. After 5 minutes I toss in a burger on the lowest rack and cook for the remaining 10 minutes. In the final 3 minutes I toast the buns in there as well.
A complete fast food meal hot and ready for a fraction of the price. :)
The air fryer is the greatest cooking tool to hit the kitchen since the microwave IMHO.

I don’t do kitchen gadgets but in the last 18 months I’ve acquired an excellent & easy to clean airfryer (Costco) and small Instapot. It’s changed my cooking forever & use both daily. Now I even make my own yogurt and homemade fries. Although they don’t do everything, they do so many things faster with superior results. Potato salad in 30 min? Yes please! 4 breakfast sandwiches in 8 min? Split pea soup in 49 min -no presoaking? Yep. Serve with crispy AF garlic toast for easy wintertime dinner after long day.
I gave away my crockpot & put away the toaster. Instapot does far more than pressure cook -sauté, poach, stew, rice & grains, HB eggs, Greek & reg yogurt. So many uses once you get the hang of it. Even make hollandaise sauce using a 2nd bowl set in water inside the main pot, then poach the eggs. Use airfryer to toast the English muffins & warm the ham. Fast & easy clean up.

I remember about 10 years ago there was an old version of this in France at our friend's house. Some kind of Super Friteuse from Tefal. It worked more like a popcorn machine with the scraper arm on the heating element. I just remember drinking wine, eating fries and playing Mario Cart with a view of the Eiffel Tower out the window. (and yes... one does use the F word, even in French, when playing Mario Cart).

Yummy, really the air fryer is the only kitchen cooking gadget that lives up to the hype. We got one of those stupid instant pots for xmas. Our daughter is always asking us if we have used it yet. No not yet or ever. we really are not in that big of a hurry to eat anything. We use our smoker and the slow cooker mostly. thanks chief John Have loved your channel for years.

I had a bag of potatoes that nobody wanted to bother with. I just received my Breville 16 cup food processor today (I know, 16 cups - I thought I lost my mind, but it's actually not that big). I had peeled the potatoes, and picked up a knife to cut them, when I remembered that the food processor had a French fry blade. It cut like 9 potatoes in less than a minute. I blinked, and two potatoes at a time were cut. I don't have an air fryer (it's our next purchase that I've been bugging my husband about), so I laid them out on 2 large pizza screens. I baked them on convection. They turned out alright, but some of them stuck. Now I'm even more determined to get an air fryer, and I'm showing this video to my husband tomorrow. However, aren't the air fryers with the spinning basket easier for fries? (I'm thinking butternut squash fries, Chef John, in case you're reading this).

G'day Chef John, Perhaps one of, if not the first, TV 'celebrity' chef, Graham Kerr, in the early 60s, did a similar thing with chipped potatoes for deep frying, of course. Back then air fryers were a long way in the future. Chef Kerr did the boiling or near boiling water trick but also added a dessert spoon of sugar, dissolved in the water; after he had already drained off the starchy cold water. He then let the sweet hot water and chips sit for at least 30 minutes. I've used that method for all the decades since and it truly does ensure super crispy chips, or fries as you would say. Cheers, and thanks for another entertaining recipe video! BH

We got one and I immediately started making fries with it. Making fries in deep fryer at home is a mess. You have to deal with all that oil and unless you have a truck that can run on that oil, what do you do with it? Now I can make a serving of fries anytime I want. I've gained a few pounds, but WTH YOLO and fries are part of living. BTW, I mix half ketsup and half homemade sriracha sauce for the dip.

What Chef John did at the start with the boiling water etc we call that parboiling here in the UK. It's how we make roast potatoes to go with our Sunday roasts, we've been prepping potatoes like that for centuries.

just got one... I loved your whole commentary on how to make fries... the pros and cons, etc... answered all my questions, put it in the right perspective... you're right, air frying isn't a substitute for deep frying, it's a whole other method of cooking, and I heard the latest... it increases acrylamide exponentially! (like a factor of 20x in some cases!) so it's all trade offs... love your channel thanks

I just remodeled my kitchen and the new oven has a built-in air fryer (or really, the convection oven can turn the fan up higher, which is all that an "air fryer" really is). I'm looking forward to making french fries so much better than they used to be as oven fries!
