Before the cancellation of on-campus classes, Nathan Osmond talked with students at BYU and tried to see how many could speak Spanish. See how many could actually answer back when approached and asked something in Spanish. The whole team at FluentWorlds is thinking about and praying for the students at BYU and other campuses, the workers throughout the world, and the families affected by the current health crisis.

@@johnconnorh to be honest no, you are wrong. both terms are correct though "castellano" fell into disuse due to the more used and acurate term "spanish" no, en realidad estas equivocado. ambas formas son correctas. el termino castellano solo se conserva por que nació en el reino de castilla en una época en la que españa como nación no existía. hace mucho tiempo. ahora de hecho el termino español se usa muchísimo mas y es mucho mas correcto ya que , como sabes el español a cambiado mucho en aprx 500 años que tiene de existencia, así como también notaras que el español que hablan en esas tierras (españa) difiere gramaticalmente del español usado por ejemplo en latinoamerica; diferencias en los tiempos verbales, el uso del "vosotros " y no del "ustedes" y un largo etc mas, razón por la cual aunque ambos términos son correctos el termino castellano aplicaría mas a la versión españoleta del idioma. lo que se habla en latinoamerica es español; lo que hablaban en castilla hace 500 años no es el español que nosotros acá de este lado del mundo hablamos. te dejo un link donde linguistas (españoletes no latinoamericanos confirman lo que te digo) th-cam.com/video/wdeCiZtTwgI/w-d-xo.html

Fun fact: 90% of students at BYU speak a second language and more than 50% speak 3 languages. BYU has more diversity in foreign languahe programs than any other University in the US.
That's actually pretty impressive
@@blasm1713 its usually because that a lot of them served 2 year proselytizing missions for the church in a foreign country or just needed to learn a foreign language while they served in the US. Add that on to the regular statistics of people who attend there who speak a second language at home and BYU turns into one of the more diverse schools in the country(and high on the list in the world) for languages

Bullshit... Germans might speak German and English (a miracle). I’m from Spain and I live in Berlin, basically nobody speaks Spanish or French, much less Latin. At least in the U.S. you have 50 million Spanish speakers, 3 million French speakers, and people from other countries speaking numerous languages. At the end, both the U.S. and the U.K. and other anglophone countries don’t need to learn (as a requirement) other languages because English is widely spoken anywhere. Let’s stop the bullshit of “European exceptionalism” here.

No lo creo, hay palabras básicas que muchos conocen y eso no los hace hablar ingles, en caso sea viceversa. Por ejemplo, te preguntan, do u speak English? The reality is that the spanish must be the second language in the USA because that country has a large latin or hispanic community there so it would be a great decision if the american government declares the spanish a the second language in that country.

At BYU you might find more students (especially the Mormon students) who speak another language as those that do their mission become pretty proficient at that time in life.

Edit: The student said "Türkçe biliyor musunuz?" (Do you know Turkish) and the interviewer accepted that answer as his name.
That is funny that they went to BYU. That is probably the the best school to find people who can speak a second language. Sixty five percent of students can speak a second language and there are qbout 128 languages known on the campus.
