This is the play I always think of when people say Bird wasn’t athletic. Way better than he’s given credit for.
"If the game is on the line, give me Michael, if my life is on the line, give me Bird". - Pat Riley
Larry seems pretty darn humble for as great as he is 🥰
ABSOLUTELY.
Merciless in game, magnanimous off the court.
Seen several of the greats behave the same way.
Larry was the biggest trash talker on the court, but humble off it.
Ohhh, he's humble - but not when it comes to his basketball talents.
@robertmorley4506 Would it be more suitable for him to be disingenuous and lie about his abilities that we all have seen?
So MANY great Larry Bird highlights. So humble and what a role model :)
Bird was the GOAT he will always be in top 5 players in History!
Bird, Magic, Jordan. We'll never see anything like them again.
They certainly were special but athletes keep on getting better and better in every sport.
No, we have to put up with the likes of Nikola Jokić and Luka Dončić. What a letdown!
@@DAVIDMILLER-nc9vo Great players, to be sure.
@robertmorley4506 It depends on what one considers as "better" and what one values/prioritizes.
@@cindyknudson2715 The media will always point to the measurables like speed, strength, vertical, etc and proclaim athletes are getting “better”.
But fans never take those metrics seriously because when the season is on the line, it’s the guys with clutch shooting, competitiveness, a sense of the game, etc that will beat the other guys every time.
That play happened because of pure hustle and dexterity. Let's be honest, 99% of players would not have even gotten that rebound
99.9%
Or even have tried. For Bird, it was natural to do so. Fundamentally sound.
Red Auerbach is a legend. So is Larry Bird.
I’ve been watching basketball for 60 years and haven’t seen that same play made before or since. Legend!
The best shot I ever saw was Bird's jumping out of bounds, turning with the ball and shooting over the back of the backboard for two points. You have to have a split-second thought and the ability to pull it off. Larry Legend.
That I remember. Forget the Basket ball throwing from across the court and getting it in. But LB’s no look shot over the back board. Is like you said. The best shot ever made.
That was a jawdropper for sure - nobody could give heart attacks like the Bird!
It was a great shot, but it didn’t count. The ball cannot go over the backboard.
When Kareem says he's the best he ever played against that's enough said on this subject
No tattoos. No jewelry. No multi colored hair. No face piercings. Just pure talent.
Amen
And a dedication to his team.
Lol this is the most racist ass comment I've ever seen. I didn't know you could write in dog whistle.
Greatest all around player EVER, Larry LEGEND Bird
The best by far.
Bird was a great player, but not the greatest all around player ever! His titles and stats while impressive, do not elevate him to the greatest!
LeBron James is without a doubt the greatest basketball player hands down!
@@chetroberson8023 Your opinion, not mine.
@@x00p3 chetroberson is probably 30 years old, and didn't live through the Bird years. The only thing LeBron did better than Bird, is dunking.
@@chetroberson8023Sorry. Lots of players better than LeBron…. Wilt Chamberlin, Bill Russell, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Dr. J, Dominick Wilkins, Kareem Abdul Jabar, Bill Walton and Pete Marovich immediately come to mind.
So many people remember him for his shot making ability from almost anywhere on the court, but to me it was his total awareness and court presence that set him apart from so many other greats in the game. He always knew where his teammates were at all times, and if there was a better more predictable shot to be made by someone other than him, he always found a way to get that player the ball. A real total team player. I was able to see him play in college at ISU back in 1977 - 79. A legend was being born. One of the greatest to play the game.
I totally agree with your assessment! Larry Bird was playing the game of chess on the court when everyone else was playing checkers! He is in my humble opinion, the GREATEST OF ALL TIME...!
I will second that.@@happychildhood591
Those who never saw him won't understand how remarkable he was. What separates him from everybody who ever played is that he could make a highlight reel play at any point in the game. Even mundane things like an inbound pass, a jump ball, going for an out of bounds ball, a free throw, a whistle, a time out, sitting on the bench, it didn't matter. He started playing the game before the clock even started and played every second. It was exhausting watching him play because you were afraid you would miss something.
@@zachmartin1458😁 I love that
That shot was one of the most remarkable, most ridiculously great ones ever, by Larry or by anybody!
The greatest PLAY was "the steal"--also extraordinarily athletic.
I never saw a play like that before or since. Amazing. Larry Legend.
I have always thought that this play has never received the attention it should have. I believe this is the greatest single play ever in the NBA. Not only the athleticism of it but the ability to recognize that it was not going to go in and he already knew where the rebound was going to go, then tracked it down... Far from where her took the shot, and the completely ridiculous finishing move. Still amazing today. Btw I am from Chicago and was not a Celtics fan but you have to give credit where credit is due.
A lot of that play by Bird was based on luck. He guessed correctly the direction of the rebound, no other player interfered with him, and the ball went in. With 6 or 8 seconds left in a game, I once saw a player grab a ball from going out of bounds at mid-court, while losing his balance on the side line, he threw the ball at the basket, it bounced off the backboard whereupon the same player grabbed the ball and took, and made, a "hail mary" shot from over 40 feet in the last seconds of the game. Truly amazing. Of course that required luck too.
@@mikewalters3048yeah larry had a career of luck
@@bobbys4327 It was about that play and the circumstances, which are unique and therefore come about by luck.
Has to be a starter on all time team period
I remember the shot as I was watching the game . I read the BOSTON GLOBE the next day and I read Red's quote about it being the greatest shot he had ever seen . And of course RED was interviewed on TV and I watched him on that interview . Truth be told I have thought about that shot through the years and Red's comment so I have held on to that memory .
First time I heard of Bird was when my brother went to to NCAA's and was watching Bird warming up and was making shots from everywhere one aftyer another and the crowd started counting out loud.....17, 18, 19 etc
NOBODY had Birdie's basketball accume, N O B O D Y !
Bird was confident of his ability and some would say cocky, but when a man can do the things that he did game in and game out, it is amazing that he could deliver the answer that he did in such a basic and down to earth manner. Just like anyone who "followed his shot" could do the same. Amazing....
NOBODY had Birdie's basketball accume, N O B O D Y!
You're right. He is just matter-of-fact about it. Like it is just what anyone would do.... only it isn't. It's what Bird would see, recognize, and do. Larry Legend.
And, he starts out his response by criticizing his original shot.
He always owns his shortcomings (real or imaginary, to us) and doesn't make excuses for himself.
Incredible shot!!
He could do that 9 out of 10 times!
Best shooter ever!!!!
Holy shit! That was a LONG-ASS putback. Incredible strength, coordination, and timing required. Wow.
Larry bird was not athletic? BS! This is one of the most athletic plays ever. He was so athletic that he made it look easy. "It" being his whole repertoire, not just this shot.
People who say he wasn't athletic also say that three sport high school All American Danny Ainge wasn't athletic. We know what they mean...
He wasn't athletic compared to Dr. J or Dominique Wilkins, but then, no one is. Everyone in the NBA is very athletic, and Bird's hand-eye coordination was unmatched.
@@nickcurran3105Ainge played 3 sports
@@davemartino5997 Yep, just like I wrote.
I'm fairly sure Ainge in college made a famous play going up and down the court in mere seconds to win a game at the buzzer.@@nickcurran3105
I lived in a high-rise next to the Boston garden charles river park and Larry kept an apartment there also for when he was busy with celtic business and I was always starstruck when i would run into him at the store or on the elevator i love Larry Bird because he is so humble and he was so great on the parquet, also Dominique Wilkens also lived in the building and nique was no slouch either
The greats break ankles, the legend shattered souls....
I have always believed that was the greatest shot ever in roundball history. There are various levels to it, each of them well executed.
I am with Auerbach on this one. Not so much because of the athleticism, but because of the anticipation. Look where he was when he released the ball, and look where he was when it hit the rim. The ball left his hand, and he immediately headed directly to the exact spot the rebound was coming. And no, that is not normal. Yes, when you shoot, you know if you miss short or long or left or right. But nowhere near this level of precision, and nowhere near that instantaneous of a reaction.
I’m from Boston and remember watching the over the backboard shot,I couldn’t believe what I was seeing
Bird had miraculous instincts on the court.
I always that clip where he’s chasing the ball out of bounds, grabs it and passes it behind him to Parrish I think. He never looked behind him but it went straight to him
"I always followed my shot." Something unheard of today; no posing, no statuesque moves, just go get the ball and put it back.
Both men are / were great Americans ! R.I.P. Red !
this was great... but my fav was in '86 against Houston when he was about to fall out of bounds, he shot it up & over the backboard.
he knew it wouldnt count, but the play was gonna die so he figd ' what the heck' ill blow their minds with this one.
That was an exhibition game, I remember that shot, he took it off of a Sam Vincent pass
@@Gregory-sm9pf, are you sure? i thought it was in the '86 finals at Houston.
I found the video of it. It was in Hartford.
@@michaeln.2383 yes, it was an exhibition game,
@@googoo-gjoob positive, I can't remember who they were playing but next time you see the video, notice Bird how tanned he is and more blonde his hair is
Humble great, man gave and got respect.

Thank you. Good clip.
He keeps it real. I like that.
☘️ Larry Legend
Nice shirt too.
Genuine modesty.
To my eyes...The GOAT
Larry Legend, the Greatest of All Time.!!! 👍🏽👊🏽👏🏼
Thats my favourite bird moment
I said it at the time, it was the greatest play I ever saw.
There are so many great players in nba history. Bird did alot of things I've never seen anyone else do. Idk how you come up with greatest player ever. I do not understand why he isn't included in that conversation.
I remember watching this game and thinking "did I just see that?" Obviously a spectacular play.
They call him Larry Legend for a reason....
larry was more like a prophet with a basketball instead of a trash talker with a basketball
Follow your shot..... great advice, in all areas of human endeavor.
The best.
my personal GOAT choice :) no joke. yes, over MJ.
Larry wasnt a show boat.he just got the job done
The best shot I ever saw him make was one time when the ball was bouncing out of bounds behind the net and he leaped in the air to catch it and shot it over the BACK of the backboard, straight up, and it swooshed through the net. Of course, it was an illegal shot, but WHAT touch he had!!
There was one shot in the 4th quarter of Game 7 vs. Atlanta in '88 in which Bird flipped in the ball up with one hand from about his knees and it went in. I thought that was the best one.
That was when Bird and Wilkens were having their shootout and the shot you mention, I so remember it also, he shot it with his left hand and banked it off the glass, it was an amazing shot
saw him do that numerous times in college games.
I think the shot he made from behind the backboard at Atlanta when he scored 60 was his best shot.
You are correct…..
Nah. It is a difficult shot, but nowhere near improbable. I can make it. You can make it. The play in this video though. Never in a million years.
Last time I checked, the scorer doesn't give extra points if a guy is "athletic" or not. Basketball is still a learned skill.
I never know if Bird is showing false modesty, or if he did so many of those kinds of things that no single one stands out that much.
I guess, In his head, he wasn't doing something particularly difficult or unthinkable. It was simply what ANYONE would sensibly do in the circumstances.
His ordinary is legendary stuff.
The.... b-b-b-b BIRD is Word!!!
In his prime Bird is the goat!
Jordan was the best.Bird was my hero. Best all around player ever
nope on m.j.
Sorry Chris ... Jordan was 0 - 6 against Bird in the playoffs ... ZERO! And Jordan NEVER got a ring until Bird was forced to retire early with a bad back!!!
My all time favorite….! #33… Amazing player… Nobody like him…
Red was admired by fans, players, executives. Do you know what the NBA coach of the year award is called?
He was a prick and was universally hated except in Boston.
NO,what is it called?😮
Thanks for the great content. Are you able to post that whole interview with Larry please?
Bar none the GOAT!!
Wow
He was one step ahead of the others and could be compared to a adult playing against a little child. It doesnt take much athletic ability when its easy..
They want to downgrade Larry. It’s their way.
I think the best shot Larry Bird made, was the 3 pointer to beat the Portland Trailblazers in the Boston Garden, with two seconds left. It was the 84-85 season.
"Follow your shot" Do they still teach that?
Incredible shot. Check out AI in the all star game.
Which one he has a SHEET LOAD!
Second best to play the game close behind The GOAT, MJ
What about the shot flat of his back that went in?
Larry, Michael, Wilt? One of them was the GOAT. I DON’T know which one.
Can't help thinking of Steph's shot with a few seconds left in yesterdays' game against the Celtics
Dear red:
Tell me how many rules were changed to hinder birds game?
Dear morrisparrish76:
Red can't answer you. He died a while back.
Is Larry starting to look like Dustin Hoffman, or is it just me?
Just you.
The BEST Shot I saw him make was better! Larry caught a ball that was going out of bounds and shot a looper OVER and from BEHIND the backboard to score. I'm sure many of you remember that incredible shot too. That is the shot inscribed in my memory forever... Larry Bird could fly !
But was Larry the best ever remains a point of debate... Or maybe you don't remember Pistol Pete Maravich! Lord have mercy, that dude would make the most incredible Harlem Globetrotter shots and make them look easy.
I think Bird is one of the best ever but that shot doesn't compare with Dr. J's scoop on the Lakers - the best shot ever, in my estimation.
Har, har, har. Recency bias.....again.
It's too bad that Boston is the most racist city in America.
Hall of Fame member Robert Parish, on a regular basis, had 'fans' say to him, "have a good game",
While giving him the finger.
It was a nice play but come on, not spectacular.
Name one player today who could have done that? I'll wait. I have the rest of eternity.
