  • HP-IB was a high-performance bus for connecting peripherals and test instruments, introduced by HP in the late 1960’s. Today it’s known and standardized as GPIB (also called IEEE 488), and still popular in test instruments. At the time, this HP-only novelty vastly outperformed competition. Of course, HP also made great test instruments for debugging their bus: the charming, easy to use, paddle-driven HP 59401A, introduced in 1977, and the later and less charming but more efficient HP 19342B preprocessor for its 16xx logic analyzer series, which I both demonstrate while debugging the HP 7970E 9-track tape protocol.

I just purchased one of these HP 59401A Bus Analyzers. I have plenty of HPIB documentation but didn't have any way to do any experimentation let alone any way to troubleshoot problems. Thanks for another informative video!

Excellent! I like these old instruments that are single purpose, and there is a light and a button for everything. So straightforward! Have fun with it!

Entering that program with the paddle switches was very cool.

When I was a kid, tape drives were sci-fi and TV's way of saying "oooh... look.... computers!" And to this day I see them as THE "iconic" peripheral.... I'd love a tape drive like this to play with..... GORGEOUS!

HP-IB and serial analyzers saved my butt many times during my HP career.

Great video! I could not resist and have purchased my own vintage HP59401A on Ebay, in order to help me to troubleshoot some of the HP measuring instruments made during '70s and '80s. I hope it will work, or at least it will be repairable.

Old HP equipment is some of the finest workmanship I've come across.

With a bit of work that bus analyzer could probably be made into a computer by itself; it has a processor in it, most likely an HP 'Capricorn' processor of the type used in the HP 80-series desktop computers.

+douro20 Yes indeed, teeny tiny specialized computer! No Capricorn in 1977. Probably an HP Nano or early Intel micro-controller, with as little RAM as possible (can only hold 32 bytes of transactions!) to keep the price reasonable. Newly invented semiconductor memory was still the most expensive IC at the time. Cute little machine though, can't beat the fun of paddling in a program and see red digits flip!

I have one of these in my basement. Is it worth anything to anyone?

    Hey very cool vid!
I don't guess you actually managed to track down the inverse assembly disks that went with the Serial/HPIB and iSCSI preprocessors? I have both but not the software and I've been looking for images of the disks. If you have them I'd love to get copies. They are impossible to find. They are not available on the Keysight site. :-(

I do have the disc inages for the Serial/HPIB, but have not been able to find the ones for the SCSI interface yet. Send me a private message and I'll find a way to get it to you.

CuriousMarc awesome. Will do. Thanks just picked up the 8085 module and a general purpose module for the probe adapter. Sadly no disks for either. :-(

Hello Marc. First of all, thaknyou for all your videos :-)
I have the same HP 59401A also with a broken switch. Its the "Forward Reverse" which is a "returning to center switch" - i will have to change that.
In the video it looks like your "REN" switch can stay in the upright position. The "REN" switch in my 59401A is a "return to center" switch. Which is the correct one?
Also, can you recall where you bought the switches?
    Kind Regards from Denmark.

My REN switch is definitely a two position switch. I bought my switches from Digikey. Mine were Digikey Part Number CKN9731-ND, Manufacturer Part Number 7201P3DZQE.

Hey Mark. My HP59401A was an Ebay bargain. The power switch was snapped...great to know they are easy to replace. I will look on Digikey for replacement switches unless anyone knows the part number for replacement switches.
