Really bad movie. Spoilers... The house evidently is purgatory and he is there repenting for his sins and isn't allowed to leave. His sin is for witnessing his first wife take meds and drown in a bathtub and not stopping to help her. So thats what hes living with. Seyfried was able to walk out, but not the daughter. What did the daughter do? She is literally the only innocent person here. Seyfried is cheating on Bacon and allowing herself to be in a loveless marriage (even though her and Bacon seem pretty passionate) and allows her daughter to stay as well. She's not exactly a clean soul either... They also made a huge deal of the age difference between Seyfried and Bacon, even though that never pays off. Why did the puddles of water separate on the ground? Like wtf was that? Why did the daughter see the shadow on the wall? Why didn't seyfried never see any creepy shit? Why was the daughter dragged through the maze of the home like she's being punished? What was the point of the near car accident on the way to the home? Just random. Like "here's something spooky...ooh spooky car almost hit them..." So if you witness a death and don't do anything to prevent it you're just as bad as the one who commits it? I'm assuming the old man at the grocery store, the one who walks incredibly slow, is supposed to be a metaphor for the painful and dull afterlife? If not...then wtf.

When i watched it I thought it was stephen king that wrote it. The film was based a novel that was inspired by the Shining. There were social issues that definitely sounded stephen king like the young actress married an older man and the uncomfortable film work she does as an actress, which can make a husband jealous. Also there is the unexpected villain which looked very normal even nonthreatening.
