I find it interesting that both The Dark Knight and The Batman adapt parts of The Long Halloween, but use different parts of it. TDK uses the Harvey Dent plotline, while The Batman uses the Catwoman/Falcone plotline.
The mask looks very Earth One, what with the visible stitching. But yeah the trailers hinted at Zero Year influences too. And from what I'm hearing the sequels will likely be lifting more material from Snyder's comics.
I would honestly love to see more videos like this. Because not only does it give the general public an idea of where the filmmaker drew their inspiration from, but it also the presents the opportunity for them to become full fledged comic book fans.

I wish WB would start looking to more comics for inspiration beyond the ones written by Geoff Johns. But I guess that's a byproduct of Johns being an executive there.
It’s really cool to see Matt Reeves to look beyond the more popular Batman comics (Year One, The Dark Knight Returns, The Killing Joke, etc) and draw inspiration from additional stories.
When watching the movie, I also felt like this was a spiritual reimagining of Darren Aronofsky's Batman: Year One, since it features a more stripped-down, aggressive Batman, who hasn't full grasped his role as Gotham's protector. There are other elements from that script I see too in regards to the [SPOILERS AHEAD] corruption of the GCPD as a plot point, Catwoman as a club worker and less elaborate Batmobile.
I honestly wouldn't mind seeing a more direct adaptation of any of these storylines, they're all really great. Regardless, it's cool to know the filmmakers are drawing inspiration from such excellent source material.
Really excited to see how this movie turns out. Not only from the comics that this movie is potentially inspired by but because of the prior movies Robert Pattinson has been in like The Lighthouse and Good Time. I know his Twilight Saga run has still ruined his perception for a lot of non-cinephiles. But he has really proven himself to be a top tier actor.
Literally the best batman movie ever: Batman year one ( my fav comic book ever), long Halloween, earth one vol 1 and 2,ego and zero year. All of them combined into this masterpiece of a batman movie and film in general
Earth One is definitely the one i see the most influence from, especially since volume 2 has riddler. I even had a lightbulb go off when watching your earth ome video
After watching the movie, Zero Year feels more similar than I initially anticipated with Batman becoming a symbol of hope after being pure vengeance as well as spoilers: the flooding of Gotham and the lengths he goes to to help.
Batman’s my 2nd favourite superhero and my 3rd favourite character this movie was a fantastic representation of the comics I hope more people try to read comics
You should do another video similar to this but for the mcu so far it would be really interesting to see what other lesser known marvel comics were inspired to create the mcu
The Batman got me to read Batman zero year as I Heard there are similarities and inspirations for the film and man it’s such a good story for Batman and hearing that Robert Pattinson said that the court of owls could show up in a sequel gets more exciting as the court of owls was my first Batman comic and I just got city and night of owls and I’m loving it.
Goated comics books. I’m currently re reading city of owls vol 2 and man I forgot that the vol 1 new 52 court of owls was fantastic but vol 2 is a masterpiece. Especially other mr freeze arc omg. I can totally see how mr freeze can be in the batman trilogy or saga as he can link to the court of owls.
Ego is a very personal story for me due to suffering from intrusive thoughts thanks to my OCD it always resonated with me. That’s actually a big reason I’m excited for this film. Still not sold on Pattinson as the Bat but I could be surprised. I’m hoping to see it this weekend.
I'm reading new 52 batman for the first time as an adult and I'm on zero year now, so the moment riddler blew up the sea walls and flood the city I smiled knowing that Matt Reaves most likely read it too
Just watched it last Wednesday with my friends and it's really good. The movie reminds me of Se7en from the detective aspect of it and somewhat Blade Runner 2049 in terms of his hero's journey. I'm excited to see how much Reeves can add to the table. Less action and more emphasis to the characters and Gotham.
I didn't watch every interview but they definitely took inspiration from Hush, Cataclysm and Venom. While the Riddler was true to his character he was seemingly a delicate blend of Hush and Riddler. Someone who felt close to Bruce and attempting to 'aid' him in his own distorted view. The comparison to Cataclysm is bore surface level but it is important to Bruce and Batman as a turning point in their desire to do more. The Venom story taking place early in Batman's career also helps it translate well to a very particular scene late in the movie. Where most people I talked to just assumed he used adrenaline I'd be hard pressed to believe that wasn't Venom. It might get called on again in another movie or just be a fun theory.
Good video! I liked watching it. But I would think it would be better to do a video about the comics that inspired the movie after being able to watch the movie. It would be more detailed because you can talk about actual parts from the movie and how it relates to the comics rather than guessing which parts. And I think you left out a few comics as well. I know No Man's Land was also used.
It’s no coincidence either that Issue 1 of The Long Halloween was a free giveaway for those who watched The Batman during its opening days; just from reading that single comic I noticed quite some comparisons between it and the newest film I’d just watched.
Thanks for the video, my friend. I love all the comics Reeves used to create his own take on Batman, specially Ego, which is my second favorite Batman comic book, only behind Grant Morrison's Arkham Asylum.
It's cool to see all the potential influences for this latest Batman film and how Reeves cam give us his own interpretation of the character. Plus, a video love this gives us all stories to read or reread!
I feel like this take on Batman might be the one where Robin fits in the most. You have this Bruce Wayne incredibly isolated from anyone else, afraid to reach out and let anyone else into his world. Robin could be a key back to a more healthy place for Bruce Wayne, and a less vicious Batman
Batman's costume inspired by Earth One Catwoman being the daughter of a crime Lord taken from Batman the long Halloween as well as her appearance and how she looks based off of Batman year One. I'd say I really liked their choice of source material for the movie even Thomas Wayne being in the run for mayor and Martha's last name being Arkham those were taken from Earth one as well.
I am looking forward to this movie as it has a lot of SEVEN vibes and it looks like it is taking a lot of inspiration from Batman Earth One by Geoff Johns. I would be incredibly psyched if the follow ups would include and draw inspiration from Scott Snyder's material with the Court Of Owls.
Batman: Year One - bleak and gritty atmosphere Batman: The Long Halloween - detective story Batman: Ego - psychology of Batman Batman: Zero Year - Riddler as the main villain Batman: Earth One - grounded and realistic Batman

@@OwenLikesComics You know what I think our movie Batmans need? And you touched upon it in this video.
