  • A wonderful performance of a Hmong love song by Mr. Tongthor Vatou.
The TAEC research team first met talented Hmong musician, Tongthor (or Tong), after he performed for a large audience during the 2017 Hmong New Year festival in Luang Prabang. Tong is originally from Xieng Khouang Province and came to Luang Prabang a few years ago to study English at the local university. Feeling nostalgic and missing his family and community, Tong decided to learn how to play the raj nplaim (pronounced tja plai) with a friend from the university.
The "raj nplaim" is a very popular Hmong instrument and it can be used to communicate by mimicking spoken language. Watch here • Hmong "Raj Nplaim" - T... .
Recorded by TAEC. Mount Phousi, Luang Prabang. October 2018.
