I can't recall how many decades I've used the speedy stitcher. I just have to have one. A few things about using one: I heat seal the ends with whatever lighter I have, then press the still melted thread with the metal at the tip of the lighter to flatten the melted thread end. Usually this means I leave a bit longer tail on the thread ends coming out of the knot. I also try to have the end knot positioned between/within the stitched fabric, if possible. In the vid he mentions keeping the knot in the middle. He means pulling both sides of the stitch below the inner and outer surface of the fabric. But you can pull too tight and stress the fabric to bunch up.(usually not desired) You can arrange the "knot" so one side(loop) is pulled completely through the fabric. This allows for one side to have a thread that is straight through all the loops. Therefore you have a stitch that can be released by pulling out the straight side thread. (obviously for only special purposes, like make a long basting stitch for temporary alignment.) Re-spooling the bobbin. I use an electric drill. The "axle" nubs on the bobbin are just long enough to chuck one of them to a drill. Getting some extra bobbins pre-spooled can be handy for big jobs or thread switching. Just like normal sewing machines. Find, make, or buy a tool to act as a stitching pony. Big paper clamps, vise grip pliers, whatever (or even a stitching pony). Clamp the fabric so your stitches can perfectly track along the clamp edge, and allow for stitching without needing a hard surface to push into. I haven't checked availability but a "ball-point" needle would be an excellent option. All sharp point needles can and will cut fabric. I use "ball-point" needles frequently on sewing machines; and other hand sewing tasks. I usually leave my speedy stitcher locked and loaded (needled and threaded). I push the needle into a small piece of plastic foam or a short piece of webbing to cover the point while in storage. As in the vid, I avoid putting the "next stitch" through any previous stitch. I prefer to not cut fabric or threads, no matter how slight the risk.
I find that attatching a no.4 or no. 2/0 saddler's needle to the tag end helps with getting it through the loop on the back side much easier when using the smaller threads.
Ok, so MUSIC does not go on forever.. That's a blessing.. 4 minutes in its stopped while he deals with setting up the stich all. A very IMPORTANT PART..
Great info. My father used a speedy stitcher, a lot, my brother had two. They are gone, I now have three with an assortment of needles etc. Now the lights have come on - thank you. I’ve sewed most of my life and never realized what treasures these are. Can’t wait to use the speedy stitcher. Found your channel looking for tips to sew canvas - feel like I’ve won the lottery on information. 👍👍
Have been using a speedy stitcher for years to make things out of leather (bag for my bugle , cell phone cases , knife cases etc. ) but just now watching this very well done video will make my next projects much easier. I was adding extra steps that were not needed. Thank you .

Excellent video. I inherited a lot of old tools that belonged to my grandfather and great grandfather. One is a very old tool like this, still in the box, and I believe it's the same brand. I don't think it was ever used. Very nice to see such an informative video on its use. Thank you!
In 1992, Click Schreck designed and cut the set of sails for my 30 ft., H-28 based, sailboat that I built from a mold. I sewed them and did the hand work myself. Nice tool.
I did a temporary repair of my main sail many moons ago with this!! Didn’t look amazing but damn the thing held strong whilst I had the boat for a few years. It became a permanent fix at the time... sold the boat but the sail probably still has this fix !!!
Thank you. The video makes it all very clear. I want to repair my canvas bicycle panniers which are 25-years young and have now developed some split seams and lost some webbing buckle straps, due to the straps getting caught in the chain recently (my stupidity!) With this tool I feel confident I can fix them now. I'll be amazed if those panniers get another 25 years out of me as I am 74 (but so far still spinning those pedals😊).
Its basically a manual sewing machine ! Smart idea ! After watching the video and as a lifetime boater I’m suprised i never owned a Speedy Stitcher ? Of course ive had my own Walking foot machine for many years and as a Custom Woodworker ive always built my own sewing stations with extended tables for big bulky items I’m very impressed with your results
Great demo. When finishing with the square knot, I didn't have a hot knife. I leave the tails longer than the demonstrator did, hold them together in close proximity and light them up with a bic lighter. When it burns down almost to the knot, I use the metal cover on the lighter to mash the burning ends down into the knot. Doesn't look too pretty but not one has failed for me.
It's magic. Absolutely magic! I'm about to begin a project to turn some thick hand braided placemates into tote bags, and I've been trying to figure out how to do this, what to use. And there you are. Fantastic. Off to buy one of these babies. :) Thanks
IMPORTANT, atleast he does set up with lighter thread, and extra wraps around post for tension.. First video I have seen covering this.. Well Done here ...
Yup. Do not need the rhythm combo rehearsing in the sail loft while you are making an instructional video. Tell the musicians to come back later, when the work of the day is done.
This is really good. I have a speedy stitcher with heavy thread, but always have used a sailor's palm and a sail needle and thread for sail work. Nice to know I can just get a different needle and use the SS for both.
I’ve had one of these for going on 50 years. I’ve never used it that much. And I’ve always forgotten how to use it between uses. And I’ve always used the twine. Now I’m going to tweak the fit of a dog harness I just bought and wanted to see if I could do anything to ensure I do the best job possible.
Well, I don’t have that #4 needle. Since I’m going be sewing webbing I’m going to use the standard needle with #20 polyester third and make a box stitch.
Wow apparently the Film Academy is all here in the comments. Thanks for making a great video demonstrating a useful product, I’ve broken plenty of domestic sewing machine needles trying to make backpacks, this thing is just what I need to attach straps & pockets in tough spots. Good solution!
I watch many a video muted, anyway it is a good video, & this is a great tool!! I would probably agree the music is unnecessary, but your demo is 100% professional in my humble opinion.
I love all of your instructional videos - but the music was very distracting. Great video! I've always wanted to learn how to use that tool. Thank you.
i really liked your tutorial on using the speedy stitcher to make a lock stitch zigzag stitch. i am thinking the technique of making a lock stitch can be used with a regular needle and thread as well? You just would not have the groove for the thread to ride inside of when going through the material? and you would not have the convenience of the handle of the tool to make it easier to make the stitches?
If it works it's not necessarily incorrect. I use this stitch and one other that is an entirely different form of lockstitch, where each stitch locks to the previous stitch on the backside. This stitch is the simpler one though, and works as well while using a little less thread, you need to estimate the tail length and not short yourself though.
Olá. Aqui no Brasil chamamos esse ferramenta de "sovela". A minha eu mesmo construí pois na época não se encontrava com facilidade no mercado nacional. Importante é a agulha ser sem ponta para não se machucar.
I'm not surprised that there are Chinese clones of the speedy stitcher, but I've yet to find one. I bought mine, made by Stewart Manufacturing Inc, from Ebay in Oz a few years ago. Far, far better to back stitch two or three times then draw the thread through and melt ends without knotting. Also hammer the stitching flat with a soft mallet to bury it in the sail cloth to prevent abrasion
i make it a bit easier by putting the spare needle on the end ot the thread. i then push the needle through the thread of the other neelde. to keep from misplacing the needle i push it into a wine cork and pull it out when time to loop through the other thread
If you have to repair a windsurfer pocket you will typically need to rip the stitches that hold the sleeve to the sail in the area of the repair so you can get to both sides and lay it flat or in the case of the speedy stitcher get to both sides then effect the repair and resew the pocket back in place.
@@SailriteDIY was hoping to possibly just loop stitch an adhesive backed patch without splitting the luff pocket as would normally be done. thanks for the reply
First thing to do when you get a speedy stitcher is remove the thread it comes with as a bundle, then cut that bundle in three places severing the thread into thousands of little pieces, then throwing it into your garden bed - in fact it may even be safer to bury it for the wildlife to avoid even though you cut it before disposal. It comes soggy, melty, and gross, and will ruin any project you're working on. I prefer kevlar monofilament or kevlar twine for webbing stitching. Been using the same method for decades and boy it holds!
We never had music confusing our students in school. Is this entertainment or instruction? i have a hearing impairment that mixs all noises together. In essence its like trying to listen to a garbage disposal and mozart at the same time. please help. thanks.
The first stitch is actually locked in place (since it is the middle of the length of line). However, for the last stitch you could do that or tie a knot.
Sail rite not saya rite. The L is not silent. It's the same with Solder it's not soder. Nor is there a T in Second. The product looks great and I have no problem with the music or the camera work. (Just keeping in with the Theme of comments below)
Algum BR ai sabe o nome disso em português, é sempre difícil comprar essas coisas no Brasil - There is some "BR" that knows the name of this thing in portuguese, it's always hard to buy these such things in Brasil.
can't you just put another curved needle on the thread tail end to pass thru the Loop???? or use some long tweezers. Sure seems it would be a bit easier.
Realistic for a complete sewing neophyte to sew up some canvas wrench, tool holders? Buy the materials, tools, and go to it after watching such videos?
There's nothing speedy about the Speedy Stitcher. I own 2 of them and have spent many hours with them. Much faster and stronger to hand stitch with a heavy needle and pliers or a sailmaker's palm.
Agree with all the positive comments - tip: take away the zoom button from the camera and buy a tripod if the camera man has the shakes, it makes me dizzy

I think when I buy one, I'll put a bodkin needle on the thread end to make passing through the reverse side loop less fiddly.
Thank You for the education on this subject :)
Think tooth floss would work good for this? It's waxed nylon, seems like it would be more durable.
Ya, I bet it would work fine.

very useful, thank you very much
You are welcome!
good morning what is the size of yarn and needle
which are used in the sewing of tents
It would depend on the weight of the fabric you use. Can you tell me if the fabric is a light weight nylon or a heavy cotton duck type fabric?

awesome! I bout to fix all my backpacks that need repair!
Glad we could help!
Why is everybody complaining about the music? That beat is 🔥🔥🔥
Can you use Braid Fishing line as sewing Line ????
We do not recommend using a Braided Fishing line, sorry.
The website comes up blank.
why can't you do a back stitch to lock the thread. Won't this stitcher do that???
The first stitch is actually locked in place (since it is the middle of the length of line). However, for the last stitch you could do that or tie a knot.
Sail rite not saya rite. The L is not silent. It's the same with Solder it's not soder. Nor is there a T in Second. The product looks great and I have no problem with the music or
the camera work. (Just keeping in with the Theme of comments below)
i need a replacement needle ?????
You can get them here: www.sailrite.com/search?keywords=speedy%20stitcher
HVALA PUNO PUNO- Thank you,
Your welcome!
Music is mainly at start..
And at very End..
A few details here that others DON'T SHOW..
Cheers....
Very helpful
Algum BR ai sabe o nome disso em português, é sempre difícil comprar essas coisas no Brasil - There is some "BR" that knows the name of this thing in portuguese, it's always hard to buy these such things in Brasil.
can't you just put another curved needle on the thread tail end to pass thru the Loop???? or use some long tweezers. Sure seems it would be a bit easier.
Realistic for a complete sewing neophyte to sew up some canvas wrench, tool holders? Buy the materials, tools, and go to it after watching such videos?
Awesome!
what kindawatch was that
Looks like a seamaster bezel with a rolex face. Couldn't really tell myself
dennis beighley upon closer inspection at 1:39, unfortunately it looks to be an Invicta.
dennis beighley but i'd love to be wrong...kinda a guess actually from my side w/the lettering on the face
@@Sir_Leelord you're right. Looks like a pro diver
Thanks much!
Thanks much? I’ll take that as a gold star! ⭐
Thanks 🙏🙏
Thanks!
Background music too loud, can barely hear you
really excellent
Thanks!!!
🎶 I like the music. Reminds me of the song “Southern Cross” by Crosby Stills and Nash...💪😎👍
You have a youtube channel?
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for acknowledging my TH-cam channel! It means the world to me. I hope you enjoy the content!
THE WEIGHT OF FABRIC IS HEAVY AND IT'S MADE OF COTTON
