    What a great way to seduce watchers into listeners. The visual representation directs the ears to listen for what the eye sees. Very fresh and impressive.

      thats a great way to teach Handicap childs and other persons to learn what music ist..
      In a chaos of hundred tones, suddenly through many color objects, you see everything in a distinct place and time..
      I can follow everything, and i have fun with some music that i could hardly hear for a long periode...
      I lernt to love such music with this optimal help...
      my gratitude to the engineers that made this happen.... ❤

    I was falling half-asleep watching this (the visuals are hypnotic) and that zoom at 23:13 actually made me feel for a second as if I was being sucked into the music and jolted me back awake
    to me this sounds like an epic "duel of the fates" between good and evil (or something like that), trading blows, backing off, striking back at each other on and on to an unknown, unresolved fate
    maybe the battle never ends

    I work with people who have perceptual problems: mainly on the autism spectrum, (these from birth) and also elderly people who are losing cognitive function.(Dementia or AD) These Musanim works are visually stunning, but I am fascinated too... by the idea that those who are struggling to deal with their own changes in brain function, might be opened to a new way of literally 'SEEING" music. Thank you for putting a beautiful, provocative 'bug in my ear"...!

    Even ignoring the awesome music itself, was there ever a composer that mastered the individual characters of the various orchestral instruments better than Stravinsky? Just the wondrous use of the instruments, such as using the bassoon at the extreme high end of it's range to play that strained initial theme. Pure genius.

    Very impressive. And beautiful. Also helps one to appreciate the complexity of the score. Resembles an animated Piet Mondrian painting -- the multicolored squares and lozenges. A lot of time and effort were obviously expended in order to create this video, but the result must have been very satisfying to the animator. MANY thanks.

    Utterly fascinating. This has been one of my favorite pieces for decades. I am no musician, can't play a note much less read a score, and of course this score is beyond complex. But watching this just once has given me more insight into the way it all works together than a fifty times just listening.
    Thanks you so much!
    Two partially off-topic asides. One... I attended a live performance of the Rite by a local orchestra. Something less radical opened, and Rite came after the intermission. The number of people - old people - who left at the intermission was just horrible. Two... My favorite performance is Dutoit conducting Montreal on Decca.

    I'm a struggling self-taught composer. One of my biggest difficulties is convincing myself that I'm writing something worth listening to, worth publishing, worth working on. The use of software such as Finale has helped me to HEAR my music, so that I don't need to pay instrumentalists just to hear my music out loud. Now I've dusted off some of my older compositions of which I only have the midi files remaining, I can bring them back to life with this visual extrapolation to SEE! Thanks so much.

    I am new to these animations and I am impressed by the variety of takes. I love the aesthetic aspect and the relationship of the visuals to music. The movement adds a great deal to this "notation" and brings out the structure of the pieces. The medium seems to be perfectly made for this piece, it brings out the rhythms, harmonic blocks, changing textures and instrumentation - very fascinating and impressive work. This piece has inspired my own compositions so much for so long. It got me to experiment with polytonality and polyrhythms. It directly inspired a piece for orchestra I'm writing called "Astros." The way it's instrumented has taught me a lot too, such as dampening dissonances by placing them between different instrument groups. I'm glad that this piece is still extremely influential over 100 years after it's initial premiere.

    • @musanim
      @musanim  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Definitely different in parts than a live performance. Mostly a balance thing ie "the strings are totally overpowered by the horns there", but this is a fantastic digital representation and the visuals made me notice things I've never heard before (as they get blended in so much with everything going on) and I've been listening to this for nearly all of my 45 years on Earth. I can't read music, but I can "follow" a score in that my dad taught me some piano as a kid and I forgot how to really read music, but enough to follow along with a few slips. This is more enjoyable :)

    • @ellisberg
      @ellisberg 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +musanim Your system for visualization makes me curious now how other modernistic classical works might look. Ligeti, for example. Probably look like a TV not tuned to a station, huh? Copland would be interesting. Shostakovich, too. I think the more complex and arhythmic passages render the best visuals. Just an opinion, of course. I watched some of the Beethoven, Bach and Mozart visualizations you did and enjoyed them, but their order and more predictable patterns weren't quite as fascinating to me as Stravinsky.

This version does help for a few reasons: maybe just the scrolling, because in the old days part of the fun/challenge was not losing my place. But as it goes by your score helped my notice instrumentation details that I would miss with a regular score. I would recommend this for folks not familiar with the music, as a way to be introduced to it. I think it is both informative and engaging.
    I'm a fan. Now on to the Holst! :-)

    The animations reveal the complexity of compositions. I would also like to see ONLY wavy lines to indicate the crescendo and diminuendo sound vibrations of the various musical instruments. The harmonization of colours is beautiful.

      Piano notes? What piano notes?

      Musical vibrations (the lowest pitch we can perceive is 32 cycles per second) are too fast to see. I've done some experiments with showing dynamics, but to do a really good job, I need a recording with each part recorded separately; so far, nobody has made one of those for me.

    I've been listening to this work for 30 years and have studied the score for it's orchestration, sonic palette and overall complexity. John Williams was obviously influenced by it. I have to say, this is an incredible mash up rendering of a midi/virtual instrument performance and visual representation. It blew me away! Congratulations. Incredibly interesting. After viewing, I tried reading lines of text on my screen and my brain was seeing all the text moving smoothly to the right (even though it wasn't really)

      I don't know. Your named sounded familiar, so I Googled. I was curious to know why you were studying The Rite ... thought you might be a composer or a music theory teacher or ? ... I have a terrible memory ... I'm very pleased with this video, and would like lots of people to see it, so when I find somebody who reacts strongly to it, I want to know more about them ...

    Hard to believe this is from the year 1913! There couldn't have been many movie scores like this until the 1940s and 1950s. This was absolutely way ahead of its time!
    3:24-4:44: I would imagine here is where John Williams got his inspiration for the theme from 'JAWS'! :-)

    It's fast, a bit tight towards the end (time compressed - slightly rushed feeling, doesn't have the loose groove of Berlin under Karajan,or deep pocket of London under Tillson Thomas, but this is magnificently realized - just beautiful to see. Well, done, really well done. Thank you! Wow! LOVE IT

    Completely blown away. This video wins the Internet PERMANENTLY ;):):):)
    I fell in love with the Rite from Michael Tilson Thomas and Ralph Grierson's '72 EMI / Angel recording of the first composer's two-piano reduction (to rehearse the ballet premiere). It's like an x-ray of the structure and it spoiled me; I haven't found an orchestral version I couldn't pick a bone with (usually balance issues of one sort or another). I understand the Bernstein / Columbia '58 NY Phil version is supposed to be definitive, but I haven't heard it yet. But this MIDI version is damn near perfect. Actually, technically it *is* perfect ;)
    I have nothing but superlatives for your presentation. I love the way thick notes spread out horizontally in both directions and then shrink back. I love your choice of shapes for instrumental colors, and your color choices as well. Totally rings with my intuition.
    You mentioned you had issues working with the MIDI file. Did you make this using pure audio input, or did you have any access to the MIDI synching information?

    • @musanim
      @musanim  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The audio and the MIDI both came from my collaborator, Jay Bacal. My animation software gets its score data from a MIDI file, but in most cases, it's a MIDI file that I create myself, and my software expects that file to be structured in a particular way that Jay's file was not, so I had to do a lot of work modifying the MIDI file so that it could be used.
