      I think the 24mm f/3.5 also looks very attractive. It has the opportunity to be the cheapest autofocus FX 24mm this decade

    The fact that this is sharper in the corners down toward f/16 than some well-respected lenses are in the center at f/5.6 is mind-blowing.

    i think Sigma has struck gold with this new direction on their line up! Usually camera companies segment their lenses in such a way, that prohibits the manufacture of quality and relatively well priced SMALL lenses . Thank you for the video, I can't wait for a canon rf version

  • @IanWilkinson
    @IanWilkinson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    This Sigma's getting close to the Voigtländer 65mm f2 Apo macro lens in terms of resolution, although not quite as well corrected for chromatic aberrations (or colour rendering, possibly). Autofocus is a welcome addition though. For a very slightly wider but equally sharp alternative, consider the venerable Sony 55mm F1.8, which is costs about the same too.

    This lens is borderline groundbreaking for full frame sensors, being the first 65mm outside of macro lenses to my (admittedly limited) knowledge. It's a very interesting field of view, and if I understood right, Joel Sternfeld used something similar on his large format cameras. I'm glad to see the performance keeps up with the concept. The distortion is a tad annoying, but at least it's not as distracting as on the 85mm DG DN. Thank you for the review!

    Thank you Christopher. Your reviews are always thorough and great. I have the 35art, 50art, 105art and Sony 85 1.8, and I use all for events, weddings, commercial, family portraits etc. The 85 is old now and has proven it can miss focus in lowlight or miss eyes in portraits in decent light. I will upgrade to either sigma 85 dgdn or because I have the 105, I might replace my 50 and 85 with the 65mm. So for me at least this is very relevant. How does the 65 compare to the 85dgdn for contrast, flare control and backlit AF. Which one felt good to use, for fun or for work? I suspect I will love the 65mm but the 85 focal length still might be needed for my work, as well as f1.4 aperture. AF reliability is so important to me which is why my 105 is awesome and why I will one day replace the old 35art with 35GM for best AF at close up and at distance. The 50art has let me down as many times as the sony 85, so both will go one day, even though both are sharp they do miss AF in some shots, even on my A7iii and A9. Does the 65 or 85dgdn have reliable AF? Share your wisdom please.

    Excellent review.👍 The distortion is by design to get the lens small. Sigma did the same with the 85mm DN, and they do it as the camera can correct for it in body. So to make excellent small sized lenses like this they chose this road. I also liked that the bokeh doesn't look busy or distracting in your photos. Can't wait to pair the three new lenses with my Sigma fp camera 😊

  • @MLee-vcrr

    Great video. I will be getting this lens for the Sigma fp. I love the way it renders, the "something different" focal length, and build quality. The Lord's blessing be upon you!

    Thanks, that was lovely, ASMR qualities indeed.
    I am a bit confused though. At 6:00 "In camera correction" is mentioned, and I had no idea that the Sony cameras had correction data for third party lenses, and for a lens not yet on the market even. Is this correction perhaps made through an "algorithm" that analyses the images taken, and not based on the build of the particular lens?
    By the way, I very much prefer the uncorrected images. 🙂 And it would be very interesting to se comparisons of the corrections being turned on and off.

    Thanks for this excellent review of what appears to be a beautifully built and high performing lens. The IQ looks outstanding. I'm guessing that there are very few (if any) 65 mm prime lenses and certainly none that I know for the Sony E-mount. I'm also impressed with its performance on the Sony 5100 (APSC) camera. Its size fits well with the small form of Sony mirrorless cameras - a 62mm filter size is really nice. Regarding the magnetic lens cap, I'm wondering if it works when the lens is fitted with a filter.
    Overall, this lens looks like a winner and one that would prove a useful addition to any lens collection. Release date is said to be mid-January 2021 so there is just a little time to save up the pennies, quite a few pennies actually but worth it, I think.

    • @Cthames123
      @Cthames123 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m seeing your point, and feel the same in terms of focal length. I have a 24, 50, and 90mm. With the APSC super 35 mode right now I can cover 24,35, 50,75,90,135mm. So the 65mm wouldn’t add additional focal length coverage but perhaps it can supplants one of my mainstays. I can’t see it replacing my 90mm, Sigma, f2.8, DG DN, so the question for me is can it replace my 50mm, (Sony, 50mm, f2.8,G). From my research of multiple sites the 65mm’s calling card is it’s otherworldly sharpness across the entire frame at just about any aperture, per the clinical MTF chart tests. I value sharpness, but pragmatically, after a certain level the outperformance in sharpness becomes no longer perceptible. Also, there would be a hole from 35 to 65mm if I jettison my 50mm. So, I am left wondering how I would make use of this brilliantly sharp lens, whereas the lenses I have I am clear how I would use.

    They're coming after us voigtlander/zeiss fangirls ;0 nice try. If they can achieve better tonal expression and brighter apertures then they can have my money ;)

    not a good buy for its price, should have been $399 max.
    edit:
    for perspective: Samyang 75mm f1.8 sells for $329 (cheaper by $370, lighter 230g vs 405g, smaller & brighter)

      So what $400 lens is as good or better? That's the only possible justification there could be for saying that the price should be that low.

      The Samyang lens is very nice but the Sigma lens is clearly a higher quality product - sharper and with significantly higher build quality
