Apparently the German radio operator of that U-boat served as a Museum tour guide for the ship many years later.
Our school took a field trip and went inside this submarine. At the time I was to young to understand the historical significance of it. I do remember thinking it would be cramped to live on. You guys are great I wish we lived closer so we could meet. Thanks
I was there too and for the life of me I can't remember seeing it. That was 50 years ago. I guess my memory has faded a bit but thanks for pointing that out. Good information.
@@greghamann2099 Yeah it was outside of the museum, but they finally put it inside because of graffiti.
I've been in that sub in Chicago a few times. The first time, as a kid, I thought it was neat, but after I got older and understood the history of it, I found it super f---ing awesome.
Remember the coal mine and the farm that were inside the museum?
As a kid in the 1950's, my family was driving along Lake Shore Drive, in Chicago. That's where I saw it! A HUGE submarine pulled up on the beach. How they got it from there to the Museum of Science and Industry, in Chicago, is beyond me. I visited it many times, at the Museum. Very interesting.
A great museum I saw it on a class trip from Columbus Wisconsin about 50 years ago.
Remember the coal mine and farm inside?
Not that there is any evidence that you even read your comments, but on the off chance thst you do, i have heard that after the war was over, and parts were needed to finish fixing the Uboat. German engineers sent those parts with instructions because they felt that since it would be german engineering on display, it needed to look its best... great job loud guys btw
That is so German 😂
I love the electrician, you just can't stop watching him. Sometimes he talks a little too fast for me to catch everything, I have to turn down the playback speed.
Technically the photographer was doing other work as well. He wasn't just standing around with a camera. He was assisting in trying to gather intellegence in case they had to abandon the sub.
Exactly...if everything went wrong and the sub ended up sinking, the pictures of all the stuff inside would be so important...the camera guy was their insurance policy.
That's true, and most of us know that if we have any level of education in the US. But it's still way funnier to hear he's there to say world star! Even though we know the reality if why he was there. Much more fun that way.😊
It was a joke 😅
You actually recalled it on point bro. Alan Turing was the man who helped break the enigma code earlier but UBoat 505 was after that and we were able to specifically know what they were saying at the time, instead of Code breaking and getting information here and there. Cause once the war broke out in full, they increased security and started changing the codes alot. So having up to date cypers and a machine helped us learn as much intel as possible
...and today if a Captain had "unnecessarily" put his crew in mortal danger, he would have been court martialed.
Thank you for sharing! Btw, he just uploaded another one! 😂 He is fun and funny to watch and learn about history we weren't taught in schools! 😊
I was in the United States Submarine Service myself for 8 years and I have visited the German U-Boat in Chicago. The British had already decoded the enigma Code in Bletchley Park which was a huge hush hush secret. They were actually kinda upset when they heard we had stolen the German Submarine because if the Germans had found out they would have changed the codes they had already broken.
I must have seen it too That was 50 years ago and I don't remember it at all. Thanks for your service!
Interesting you had no idea how subs were attacked. I toured the inside of a WW2 sub the USS Cobia in Manitowoc Wisconsin. It sunk 13 Japanese ships.
Adm Gallery wrote a book called U505 that gives the complete story. It is well worth a read.
He also wrote several fiction books about "Captain Fatso" which were hilarious.
@@taun856 Captain Fatso at times is more like the real Navy than most of the non fiction
@@axcs0119 I was in the Army, so it seemed like the real Navy to me!
its still there. Never underestimate America
That was a great video. Do you know the person who posted it first though? The guy in the first video? Does he have a channel too?
Yes. He's called The Fat Electrician and he has a channel
Two facts so you know the Enigma machine was the tool to send the code first you would code the message it would be given to the communication officer he would set the 7 dial and sent message and the receiving communication officer what have the same setting on his machine after receiving the code he would hand it over to his Superior who decoded the message😊facts number two at the time of the U-Boat capture the United States were lagging behind in submarine warfare😊
That's Strategically Transfer Equipment to an Alternate Location. You know, STEAL. Lol!
They had to put it inside to stop graffiti when it was outside.
Chicago weather had something to do with it also, seeing it outside and inside, while inside you can see the amount of damage the weather did. The brackets between the outer hull and pressure hull were rusted through. Graffiti wasn't a problem; you can always repaint it.
Should watch the movie U-571. It's a great film
Lol this story is so American 😂
Will you steal it we just borrowed it took a joy ride
It's mistitled, it wasn't stolen, it was captured in war.
Just one of Fat Electrician's jokes...he has this thing with the word STEAL that turns it into an acronym...
S trategic
T ransfer of
E quipment to
A lternate
L ocations
So titling the video as if the sub was stolen instead of "captured" is part of one of the running jokes of the channel. 👍
like everyone else I,Ve been in that sub when I was a kid at the Museum of science and industry by the lake.
Good post.
I’ve been in that Submarine
Remember the farm inside?
Can you go inside the exhibit (inside the U-Boat)?
You could years ago,it was a tight fit, don't know about now.
@@johnwest5837 cool, thank you for answering!
@@youdidntseeanything8589 They also had a coal mine and half ass farm inside,we grew up in the city thought it was strange but you got to see sheep and chickens hatching.
You have to pay extra, but yes you can go on board. It's an excellent display of a U-boat, well worth it if you are ever in Chicago. If you want, I can give you a short list of things to see if you ever visit the city.
@@77marioland I would love to visit someday, but highly doubt it's in my family's near future. Just, not in the cold, lol. I'm from the South, I'd freeze so faaaaaast. Thank you so much for answering 🙏
