These are golden tid bits for us old "mis-taught" slingers...by far one of the best youtube guitar channels in exisitence.....thx GT....especially admire your other life observations in between tid bits...totally relatable....
This is good. I did not understand caged really until I did a triad study and just realized, hey - if you have the 135 in any key, you’ve got the major/minor chord, and the guitar is set up in a way where you get basically three main ways and two alternate ways to do that but give you five hand positions for the same chord across the whole octave. Then I had to learn all the notes on the neck to figure out how to get the three notes. Then I realize what spread triads were. Then I realized you can overlay the pentatonic and the full major scale in the same hand positions. Then I had to practice this for like six months in every key. Then I asked myself why I put off doing this for like 35 years! It’s because I was scared, it was easier to just fling my fingers around and play intuitively, but I really like this now. Anywhere I end up I can kind of pick up a shape from there and I’m not lost.
I have a long way to go. Been a life long player. But your channel and Uncle Larry’s as well as others Brett Papa, Ford, etc…. Have allowed me to improve immensely over the last couple of years. Thank you!!!!
Me too. Been playing forever and I know CAGED very well but I’ve picked up tons of very useful pieces from both GT and Uncle Larry. Valuable stuff that has really improved my playing.
Life Pro Tip: If you want to “get it”, take the time to really memorize the notes on the fretboard, to the level of instinct. This all gets SO much easier, to see these note patterns, when you’re literally seeing (and thinking) “in notes”, rather than in string numbers and fret numbers.
Yes, learn the notes and also intervals. It all goes together. Intervals are to me the foundation and learning the notes really sets you free in a lot of ways.
Remember a few years ago when people were asking if guitar music was “dead”? Well, it’s back to life and bigger than ever thanks to selfless guys like this spreading their knowledge online for FREE. So life-affirming. Thanks Guthrie.
Is it just me or are these intros just pure guitar Bliss? Stay for the insight, but your intros are always just tasty as can be....could listen all damn day

Gunther, I’m 74 years old. Started playing when I was 13 stopped when I was 20. Picked up my guitar when Covid started. Been playing ever sense. move from California to Florida,I was in Nashville for four months took some lessons wish I would’ve known about you then. You have open the door for me with the cage. I’ve used the cage system over the years, but could never see it like you explain it. I should say the doors just cracked open, but you really open my eyes. Thanks so much. Renold Victor
Thanks for everything Guthrie, you’ve helped my playing tremendously! I know CAGED well but I’m picking up other valuable stuff in every video. Keep em coming mate!
Guthrie I commented before I saw the last 6 minutes of your video. I’m 2 + years into playing. I’m working through pentatonics vertically. Happen to be working on G and you laid out the chord shapes within the G scale. K’Boom! Lightbulb moment. Thank you so much!!
Thank you for this amazing lesson! Your explanation of the CAGED system and how chord shapes, arpeggios, and the major scale connect really opened my eyes to the fretboard. Greetings from Morocco ☀
Jordan and Tim are phenomenal in every sense of that word. Magical stuff, GT!! You guys have redefined the way I understand music by orders of magnitude.
I took a bunch of those lessons, Guthrie but this one just laid it out perfect even though I knew it there was small things that just made sense the way you described it in that video I’ll never forget it. I got a long ways to go and I’ve already traveled 1,000,000 miles studying. Thank you for all your help.
I bought it about a year ago. I have learned one and a half of his tabbed songs! Lol! He takes you places on the guitar neck you have never gone. You are right, such a great value.
Hey GT, Thanks to you a fire was lit. I now understand triad shapes are repetitive within the bar chords and each is its own inversion. Super cool sh!t man. ThAnK yOu immensely for that and the ever inspiring way you talk to us. Never forget you are making a big difference in the world bro! Hitting the tip jug. 🙏🏻
MR GT Your Intro is golden 0:08 😊 This lesson is soo well explained Guthrie but what i love is , it made me laugh several times in a really good way. You are such a great person! I know you are very busy now but this videos are so great, so human. Thanks for this GT as allways! Never stop telecasting from East Nashville Tenessie, best contribution in TH-cam!
Hey Guthrie, I understand that some people are struggling with this concept, however I find your instruction very clear and appreciate it. Since having watched your first video on the CAGED system about 5 months ago, I've been having so much fun with it, ever since. And when you add a video on how you apply the system, I learn something new to add to my playing. Thanks so much for your uploads! Suzi V.
@@garrycole8909 I have the same dilemma. When he showed the wrong way to play the D shape, it was exact how I have been playing it. Not sure what is the correct way.
If I understood GT correctly he is using his index capo finger on the root of the D string, middle finger on the low E string to get the major 3rd while deadening the A string, ring and pinky on strings G and B. What I took from it was that puts his hand position where the arpeggio and scale notes fall right under his fingers in the D shape allowing him to move to the lower register toward the E shape For a G major : middle finger 7th fret low E and kill the A string. Index finger 5th fret D string. Ring finger 7th fret G string. Pinky on 8th fret B string and deaden high E. Maybe I got wrong but that’s what I got from it. Dude is Brilliant
After just being a decent rhythm player and a awful lead guy since the 90s this year 2024 I decided to truly learn the guitar. 3-5 hours practice everyday. Enrolled into a year long program. Thank you for these last 3 videos. The problem I had connecting the shapes was skipping the D shape. I just was going straight to the C shape from the E shape wondering why it didn’t flow. That D shape, as you explained in this video, is such a necessary piece to the puzzle connecting E shape to C shape. Explanation I needed 30 years later! Now I see where one of those flows into another shape. I see this now! Subscribed to your course. Thanks!
Thanks, Guthrie!! Very clearly explained. Valuable knowledge. At this point, I have about 90% of the fretboard connected under my fingers, thanks in large part to you.

Thanks for the deep dive over the last few lessons on caged. I’m not there yet but thanks to your instruction I feel like I’m much closer. Thanks GT! 🎸👌
This is so helpful. I understand how the fretboard is organizaed now, it would be useful to know how to go about practicing all this in order to internalize it. Do I start with one note and do shape by shape, learning major/minor pentatonic in each position?
Biggest thing that helped me after I had memorized the scale shapes was to learn melodies to great songs. Seeing the melody line move between CAGED shapes was big for me. You can learn it in each position, on one string, 2 strings, all strings all positions, etc. Learn a simple melody and then learn it in another key. The more you play and put this stuff into musical practice it just gets clearer and clearer. If you find a little lick learn it everywhere you can.
Play along to a 3-chord Blues; start with one that uses E7-A7-B7. Find each of those 3 chords in all 5 positions. Start by learning 1-3-5-b7 of each chord in each position. Gradually start adding b3-4-b5-6-2 (in that order) to each of the 3 chords, one position at a time. Always know both the letter name and the interval number of the note that you’re playing. Eventually, it will become super-easy. - So learn to play a 3-chord Blues in each of the 5 positions. -
