Hallo Charl, now at the end of november 2022 the Canon R6 Mark II is coming in the stores in the Netherlands. Can you tell me if these setting can be used with this New model? Hope to buy it with the RF 100-500 lens for bird fotography. Can you also make a review from the R6 Mark II with the RF 100-500 mm lens? Regards Leo
AL least from my experience, the initial servo AF pt option doesn't work with the double back button focus method. It only works with 1 BBF or shutter focus in Face + Tracking or zone area focus modes. 1st option: Initial AF pt set for face and focus point option: you can select the initial focus point and the camera will start focusing on this person, animal or subject. 2nd option Af pt set for focus point: if you are using another focus mode and changes to face detection, the initial point will be your point selected in the previous focus mode. Both are very useful when you photograph two or more subjects because you can select manually the initial focus. 3rd option Auto: the camera selects automatically the focus point. Very useful video Charl, and sorry for my English.
Concise, outstanding recommendations common sense setting up a new camera. You Pangolin folks are unequalled for great reviews which are unbiased, and free of unnecessary distractions.
Purchased R6 yesterday and spent the afternoon setting it up to these tips. I have used it today and have to say they are excellent. Thanks for the great videos you guys post
Thank you very much for this instruction! I started to photo wildlife with this camera and got a little bit confused. Now - all is clear, I cant wait to go and check settings, especially regarding AF. Thanks a lot! Subscribed!
I just rented the R6 for a birding trip to try before buying. I like your setup as it’s close to how I have my DSLR setup. Having just received the camera this afternoon I am not familiar with the menu setup and I found it difficult to find the menu you are discussing. I’ve watched the video at least four times all the way through it, trying to pause where you show a menu. It didn’t help that the rental R6 was setup by the previous renter for studio work with a delayed shutter and other custom settings. After a couple of hours, I’ve got it setup close to what you did in the video. Can’t seem to get that dual focus setup with the back button focus and star button for eye-tracking. Need to watch the video a few more times. Thanks for the great content but would appreciate more help navigating the menu and sub-menus.
Hi Carl. I have now had my R5 which is much the same as the R6 for a few weeks. I have found that using the AF for spot and * for detect to be a little awkward at times as the 2 buttons are not right next to each other and there is a body ridge in between so not so easy to slide across. So I have also added DOF to eye detect and have found that if you spot on to the subject and then I use the DOF as well with the eye detect it locks on and does not appear to lose the subject which happens sometimes on eye detect only. I also have my MF button to toggle bewteen single and high+ shooting as many times the subject is static and no need to fill up the card with endless frames to sort out in post. Lastly I use the control ring for ISO. I normally like you use auto but have found that especially here in the UK where this summer we have had thick cloud nearly every day for months I find that 6400 ISO even using DXO still cannot give me the sharpness I want, so reducing to 3200 using the ring which is really fast helps even and I can adjust in LRC or photoshop post. Thanks for your other suggestions there is always something to learn about these cameras after coming from a 1DX.
Hi Charl. Thanks for the excellent video on the R5 set-up. I have to laugh at myself because it's been 11 months since I received my R6 and I'm still learning about the set-up!
Thanks for this Charl, it's proved invaluable. I saved it to my watch later list until I got my R6, which was only 2 days ago, and having watched this I'm now a happy bunny with it's auto focussing capability and performance, Thank you once more.
Your videos are so informative and clear to follow. I am very impressed with your presentations and thank you very much for helping me to understand the detailed workings of this camera. I learn so much from you Charl. I have just purchased the R6 but now waiting for the adaptor to arrive so I can use the EF 100-400 lens on it. I look forward to more of your videos. Thank you.
Thank you very much for this. I was looking for a clear and precise explanation of all you covered here. Hope to see you all some day in person. Cheers from 🇨🇦
Super helpful. Thanks for putting this video together. After many years with crop sensor Canon cameras, and dabbling with Nikon FF mirrorless, i've bought the R6. Very excited to try out this reported much better focusing system and ergonomics.
Hey Charl, Thanks for putting out another quality video, I have watched a couple videos now and find them very helpful. They are filled with useful information that a photographer wants and needs to get better photos and more keepers. I especially liked this video as it had the kinds of information that would help me to decide if I wanted purchase this camera, the R6. I plan on buying the R6 and battery grip in the near future. Thanks again.
Hello Charl, thanks so much for this eventuality have the financial means to move from my 5D III to R6 next week. Apologies if this question has been covered before but I need to decide between the EF/RF adapter standard or control ring. For wildlife and birds in flight will the additional programable be worth the money. Thanks in anticipation. Derek
Excellent video for R6 Guys. Do we have such video for canon mirrorless R3 camera. I hv lot of confusion in setting my R3 camera for wildlife. If any such video is available it will be great help, pl share the link. If not then in near future are you planning to make one? thanks n regards
Thanks for this! I like to use the star button to cycle between autofocus modes, but since I've disabled all the other modes except for single-point and eye AF, the star button then acts as a toggle switch between the two. This way I can keep using the AF-on button for focusing which I prefer.
Thanks for the very informative video! I like the tip on using the star button to eye focus when using point AF. Would you explain why you would use this instead of just using the tracking mode?
I have recently purchased the Canon R6. Can you suggest the best settings for BIF? This is one of my biggest challenges at the moment with the R6. I using the the Canon EF 100-400mm IS mk2. I obtain quicker and better focus with the 7D mk2 and the same lens.
Thanks Charl for this very helpful video. I purchased the body yesterday and set it up like you do. I also like to have the same settings than on my Canon 5D IV to avoid confusing. But it is still going to take a while before I get familiar with all the different options.
Hi... Thank you for the tips.... I made some customizations... Very nice video.... What do you think about the combination R6 + 100-400 G2 + x 1.4 converter?
Charl, thank you very much for this setup video. {:-) I have reviewed several such videos and have found this one to be the most comprehensive. As I shoot still subjects, as well as people and animals, I have set up the C1-3 custom options to have a pre-set configuration for the kind of shoot I expect to engage in. One thing I wish the R6 had that the R5 does is the ability to save the configuration settings to the card, as I use two R6's and it's a lot more (unnecessary) work to configure two of them. As I have also got the R5, I have set it up similarly.
I just went out and had a worse experience than my last bird shoot .. I’ll try your settings , but I’m almost thinking I should have purchased the Nikon z7ii instead. I have the R6 with the 70-200 2.8 .
Hi an excellent review and most helpful recommendations, I am considering a purchase, but am undecided whether the more expensive R5 is a better option for wildlife photography, as you are aware cropping an image is usually needed, and with a 20 mg sensor one can finish up with a 5--6 mg image, ??what is your view please
So shutter is decoupled from focus, AE/ON is set to start meter and auto focus. Star is set to eye detection. Do you set up Star to start meter as well as eye detection focus?
I watched this several times to get all the settings correct. When I used the camera the first time after that I had trouble with the exposure compensation. I would focus on a subject and it would jump all over the place. I’m not exactly the most competent user of all things digital. But I couldn’t figure out how to stop it from doing that. I finally switched to aperture setting so it would stop. What I’m doing wrong?
I have this problem with R6. I use C1 and C2 for birds perched and flying birds, but some times I have to change speed and exposure compensation. I am loosing bird photos because as I spend time chasing the bird, when I finnaly find me in the position to get the shot I want, I find the camera on sleep and all settings reset. This is very annoying. Any comments on this?
Hi Carl, Absolutely loved your video. Thanks a ton. I currently own a 5d Mk 4 and a 5D mk 3 (both in excellent condition). I would like to upgrade my mk 3 - would you recommend the 1DX or the mirrorless 5? Should I eventually work towards getting a 1DX and a mirrorless 6 or 5? Regards, to Sabine also. Elize
Hi Elize good to hear from you. Selling your 5D3 and change for a R6 will be a very good idea. You could hang on the 5D4 if you want but i wont invest now in EF mount gear. There will be coming a R3 and R1 in the next year. I will rather invest my money in that then in a 1DX now. Everything are slowly moving towards that direction. You are using your gear a lot so maybe now a R6 or R5 to get comfortable with the system, but if you want to spend the money on a 1DX I will wait for the flagship R1 or R3 that will come out soon. I believe they will be more or less in the same price class. .
Thanks Charl for an amazing video. The only setting i am confused with is the exposure comp. do you assign that to another button as i cannot seem to adjust mine seems like its doing it automatically according to the light. There is moments that with top dial nearest the af-on button i can adjust the exposure.I have set my iso to auto.
Thanks for watching and your question. I have setup the set-button for exposure compensation which means that I need to keep it pressed while rotating the top wheel left to darken and right to brighten. With Auto ISO enabled that should work and the only time you will see the light meter "jumping" around by itself is if your lower or upper ISO limit has been reached and the camera is trying to tell you that you are over or underexposed because your settings aren't correct. Let's say you shoot in midday on a slow shutter speed like 1/200 sec and a wide open aperture of f/4, the lower ISO limit of ISO100 will be reached and the camera's light meter will show that you are currently overexposed. So you need to choose a faster shutter speed and perhaps close down the aperture in order to get the correct exposure. I hope this makes sense...let me know ;) -Charl
Hey Charl, great video. Are you going to do a review of the 90D as I saw it in the bag that Guts received from Canon? I got the impression that you guy's were going to review all the gear from the bag? Hope you guy's are all well. Regards, Ian
Thank you Ian yes we will do a video about the 90D. The mirrorless camera gear Canon wants back asap so we will do all that first and then the 90D as we have a few of our own. We planning to do a comparison between 80D and 90D.
Hello, first of all I follow your channel for a long time. I live in Turkey in Istanbul. My name is İsmail. I am currently using a Canon 7D mark 2 body and a Sigma 150-600 Sport lens. I want to replace the body. It would be a better combination with my existing lenses whether I buy an R5 or R6? I know you use Sigma lenses too. Have you made such an experiment? With which lens I can get a better result with my current body? By the way, I don't shoot a lot of video, so I don't need the R5's video features. Thank you in advance...
Thank you if you don't really do video and don't need 8K then you can safe a lot of money and go for the R6 very good camera. This camera will work fine with your sigma lens as long as you get an RF-EF adaptor with it.
Hi- great video - HOWEVER- u need to warn people that when switching to HEIF that u cant view the file on windows and u cant download onto a phone with converting the file to jpg on the camera which is annoying and time consuming.
Can the mfn button on theR6 be programmed to initiate video? I believe in the R5 it’s possible Super video as usual. I’ll be definitely joining one of your Safaris!
Hi Charl. I really appreciate your explanation. I have a bit of an issue with my Half-press AF after following your recommended settings. It's a bit too long to write here. Can I have your email address please? Thank you.

I just got the R6….. This tutorial has been an eye opener. Can’t wait to try it out.

Hi guys, great stuff. Lots of useful tips and full blown knowledge. When are you doing something similar for the R6 II? is it very different?
This is brilliant, thanks for all the tips.

Hi Charl, excellent vídeos from R6. Thank you very much! Joaquim

Good sir
When I go into AF method I DON'T see the first option, I believe it's called face tracking. What do I need to do to set it up on an R6? Thank you.
Excellent!! 😉👍💕
Thank you! Cheers!
Hi Charl, when i enable the HDR PQ setting I lose the electric shutter option and colour space option.
Thanks
This is fantastic. I like to repeat fantastic :-) and your review brought me to this video and I can only say the same fantastic
Wow, thanks! Glad you enjoy it.

Hi Charl. I really appreciate your explanation. I have a bit of an issue with my Half-press AF after following your recommended settings. It's a bit too long to write here. Can I have your email address please? Thank you.
Do a real wedding shoot in 4K +10 Bit then update your experience. In my experience, R5 & R6 are Overheated and stop recording.
Do you have Instagram ???
Enjoyed the video yet a majority was a bit too quick so I had to rewind way too many times to keep up.
