If they'd have moved the stencil 3 or 4 inches down the blade stock and included the tang in the same piece of bar stock instead of welding it would have been a decent knife!!! Welded tangs are a no go especially in large knives!!!
That plus the fact they don't clean the steel before forging them together, very limited time under hammer, no folding and unknown steel. It's probably just for the look.
I make swords and sometimes welded the tang. It never broke. It just needs to be done properly. Unless you're superman of course because for strength test during experiments, I tested it by slamming a sacrificial swords on rocks. It just needs preheating before and after welding to reduce stress and risk of cracks. I changed my mind about this video. I didn't see them do any preheating and postheating, what type of weld they do and what type of tang they used. I still haven't changed my mind that welded tang can be strong but I'm not sure if that's the case with this video.
@@adam-bf8li From a different video of the same factory, they stick weld a piece of steel rod to the blade. No preparation at all. The bone handles are empty. Don't even bother to fill them up with epoxy. When you actually use these knives for the 1st time, the handle just slides back and forth on the blade. They're really just for display.
It real would cost no extra to butt to tangs next to each other and make a solid structure for the handle instead of something that might fly into 2 pieces when used
In the old days when it's not easy to drill a hole on the tang, knife makers didn't make full tang knifes. They just use wet wood, and poke it to the wooden handle, the blade itself won't loose, even for hardwork (to chop tress). I know because I have several knives and machetes made by indigenous people from Indonesia, they are robust.
I’ve read all the comments and as usual everyone here is a metal urges here . I believe the title stated amazing skills . It’s a great thing to see this business flourishing by manufacturing knives for whatever there use is for . Seems to me this is somewhere in the Middle East & they’re doing something that has been done for centuries the old skool way . So atleast appreciate it for what it is as you’re not gonna ever see or use one of these knives . Great job from a crew of craftsman doing a craft most would never attempt . To easy to be judgmental and buy from what the label says it’s supposed to be .
In my early age worked with my dad and I developed sharpened techniques. I can judge this guy who sharpened knife is beyond imagination. He’s like computer with precision. This is just extra ordinary skills second to none
It looks nice but the knife is useless. The handle isn't filled with expoxy. There's no tang. It's even just welded on. No treatment of the blade no cleaning of the steel. It's supposed to be Damascus but no etching.
Many comments about the quality of those knives, but it is better to have a bad knife in hands than nothing. It can cut? Yes! But you need to do more maintenance than a good one. The real art is this, make useful tools to make our lives better.
Low expectation attitude. If you’re a craftsman like him you strive for the best with what you have. Don’t say better than nothing. Case in point, the short ass tang of the knife.
@@noahfb1 I make custom bicycles, in wood, bamboo, carbon fiber(vacuum bag, infusion, handlay up), and japanese traditional lacqueur paint, it is not a ordinary bamboo bike frame. The guys in this video made products that people can $$buy$$, do you think that guys can sell japanese hand made traditional knife in that country!?
Unfortunately when they make Damascus in these countries they often use less than *quality* metals. Which lead to less than useful blades. But the skill and Art is there and it's breathtaking to watch. If they had access to good metal I'm sure the end product would be in a class of it's own. After all it's in these countries that these skills were first born and perfected. But so much knowledge has been lost. They have the tools, they just need someone to teach them how to use them properly again. That'd be awesome.
Actually I believe that steel making first started in Anatolia, now known as Turkey in around 2000BC. India is credited with steel making from around 400BC.
Where is so crucial process... I mean quenching? Tang welded? And so short? And... if the tang can be bend with a hammer, any force putted during using, will bend it again. It's dangerous to use it. It shouldn't be called "hunting knife", but... "replica of hunting knife". Can it even withstand man's weight, behave as a spring?
Great looking useless knife, welded tang, no heat treatment and who knows what steel went into the damascus but I doubt it was good steel. Lots of skill there though, shame it is being used to churn out garbage.

So professional !
Just imagine if that skills were used to produce proper knives...
What skill? The overheating of every billet they pull out of the forge?

Interestimg production. But the fact that it has a threaded rod and not a full tang limits its use as a practical knife.

that tang isnt strong enough , seen a similar knife tested on another channel and the handle failed where the rod was welded to the tiny blade tang
That's right the tang should be the full length of the handle.
but this channel is amazing skills.... not amazing quality
Good skills but shitty final product, good looking but low quality.
I guess in that country you just weld some crap back on when it breaks.

Mass produced Damascus, with a bone handle, looks the part, but not being full tang, you can expect the handle to fall apart after some hard work.

Looks good but little to no tang or evidence of heat treat. Also likely to be full of inclusions after being tossed in the dirt while still red hot.
