    "Diesels don't sell well". Only in the USA is that true. They sell amazingly everywhere else in the world.

      There's a large negative sentiment about diesels in USA, also incredibly strict emission laws has manufacturers opting for hybrids as the economic option and gasoline for performance, no in-between.

  • @ricks8425
    @ricks8425 7 ปีที่แล้ว +73

    There a couple of things this 335d guy did to do. 1) Go with xHP Flashtune, it'll adjust the OTS map and will adjust shift points, shift quicker and hold more power. 2) Stay away from JB4, it's a US base company which does override as lot of diesel restriction. 3) KW Coilovers are great but not for daily drive use. They have a very short lifespan and needs to frequently valve compression adjustment and valve seals service. Bilstein PSS10 is the best and most durable.
    Look into JR Performance for their tune package. With the 3" straight pipe, DPF delete, downpipe, EGR delete and new FMIC you'll be pushing 385whp/620wtq. This will put a lot Camaro SS, Mustang GT, SRT8 and ZO6 showboater in check whether racing from a dig or rolling.

      @FjordTrotter 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'm doing that to mine. You have to gut the SCR system and weld a custom pipe. After my tune (Stage 2.9 Malone), I'll be pushing 400 whp and 670tq. My friend as an ats-v chipped to 550 hp / 600 torque that keeps up with the Ferrari 458 and rapes C63, M3s... interesting how mine will fare.

      I have 40k miles on kw variant 1 on a passat 4motion around 350hp in salty Alaska snow and ice and they still look and feel same as when I bought them… maybe the higher variants 2 or 3 are more track focused and need more attention? Or am I lucky?

    Great car! The 335d didn't sell well because dealers didn't have a clue how to sell it. That motor is a torque monster and is fantastic in the X5! The 2.0 litre diesel in the 328d is pretty great as well, although no match for the power of the 6 :)

    Matt needs to test drive one with a real tune, not a JBD piggy-back. There are a handful of 335d owners with hybrid-turbos, custom exhaust, bigger intercooler, methanol injection and a proper tune; making 400+WHP and 600+WTQ.

      ELLIPSIS I didn't know they did a 135i of the E8x because our journalists drove the 130i. They compared it to the VW Golf R32. They called the R32 the winner but I never felt the 130i was what BMW would have done it seemed too substandard. And with the 120d and 123d of the E8x series and the F2x 125d and 135i it never sat well with me that bmw would not have a 135i for the previous model. You've ended years of frustration. Thanks for the info.

    It's a bi-turbo 3.0, one small turbo for low end and a big one for top
    In Europe the engine comes out 286hp stock and over 600tq on a tune alone
    Probably the best bang for your buck car that you can buy

    • @weed46
      @weed46 8 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      best bang for the buck? it's more expensive than the 335i.... and it's heavier, and it's slower, and you can't get a manual
      Only cheaper if you crank a lot of miles/km, it's a good daily driver

    • @TWIRKNOLOVE
      @TWIRKNOLOVE 8 ปีที่แล้ว +118

      Just uneducated is my guess. When you say diesel, people tend to think old work trucks and noisy military retired vehicles.

    • @THEfromkentucky
      @THEfromkentucky 8 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      We do, the problem is European diesel engines can't run on our diesel fuel. American oil companies lobby (bribe) to keep our diesel fuel loaded with sulfides, which are heavily regulated due to their destructive environmental effects, so we have to primarily keep using gasoline.

    • @TWIRKNOLOVE

Since usa diesel is crap at 45 cetane make a double mixture to run around 55 cetane take it on highway and let it have it. It will clean it out and look like it did when it had 10k miles. I drive and rebuild semi truck engines i seen on a daily what soot does to oil egr and cylinder walls if not maintained soot has fine dust particles that will leave scratches on the walls. i recommend running diesel kleen every fill up to raise cetane up to 50 its cheap 500 gallon mixture is 40$ and you will feel the difference in performance and mpg

      Haha An additive to your diesel to clean a direct injection motor? You don't know much about these motors. The buildup occurs in the intake plenum, manifold and intake valves. It might work on your indirect injection truck motor but in this BMW and all the other modern european engines the intake and valves never see the fuel. That's the problem.

      nawzy202 What you say about the cetane rating of US fuels goes some way to explaining why there are so many reports of Euro diesels being clogged all to crap by 30,000 miles and less in the US. We just don't see that here in NZ and Australia. In fact I see BMW's with 120,000miles and just moderate build-up in the intake manifold.

    Apparently they have less hp in USA? in Europe they have 285 stock. Just a stage 1 chip they get up to 350 whp. And this guy tuned it to 305? And torque is also way lower. 700 nm torque is usual here for a stage 1.
    The 335 needs a straight pipe also to make a hell of a sound.
    This one seems a bit boring even though it looks good.

    • @simonorr594
      @simonorr594 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The diesel here (USA) is of lesser quality than euro diesel - more sulfur, and it lubricates the injection pump less well. It is better than a few years ago when euro diesel vehicles could not run without immediate damage, but still not the same. This is probably one reason for the carbon build up.

    • @halsoy

      Did not know that, interesting. I wonder, do you happen to know what big trucks and fuel consumption numbers are? Cause here (here being Norway), if I drive with a weight of around 20 tons, my fuel consumption varies from 10.7 miles to the gallon and 8.4, depending on type of driving.

      murphy wilson damn. I guess our diesel is quite a lot better then. We probably have a stricter rule set for truck engines as well, with the EURO standard. It's forced the efficiency through the roof, and fuel use is super low.

    • @Ward413
      @Ward413 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah your Scania and Volvo FH are pretty conservative on fuel relative to our trucks here in the US. I've heard drivers here in the US say they can achieve 7.5mpg or so in newer Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks. Not sure what that comes out to in liters per hour.

    Is driving a manual the new manly thing in the US? In Germany we are used to a MT and it's nothing special. I do understand the envolvement argument. But a nice Mercedes or ZF auto or a good Doppelkupplungsgetriebe(Doubbe clutch gearbox) is a nice thing. Why have Americans become so obsessed with a MT?

    • @austinbentley2760
      @austinbentley2760 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because in America, they are slowly phasing the MT out of existence and the true enthusiasts won't have anything to keep them involved when driving a car. A MT is just so pure and when they don't offer it in newer sports cars it's like a stab in the back.

    • @Bob_Sacamano69

      +iBOOM, Funny thing is that most of these "youtube manual enthusiasts" don't know the difference between a slush box auto, SMG, or DCT, so right off the bat you're fighting a losing battle with someone that thinks dual clutch transmissions are only available in Nissan GTR's.

    I was never a fan of this body style for the 3 series, but this is the nicest one I've ever seen. Beautiful car!

    Interesting car! I remember going to see these on the lot a few years back when they first came to the US. It definitely doesn't sound like a diesel from this video.

    Well I feel I need to clarify certain things. First of all to all the people that comment about the torque figure being lower for his car than a European one... You do know americans use FOOT POUNDS and not NEWTON METERS?!?! And when you convert it it's a respectable 644nm to the wheels!
    Secondly is to @thesmokingtire / Matt and the owner, the 330d and 530d came as manual and that's one of the strongest 6sp there is! People here in sweden put them behind all sorts of crazy builds. Almost every crazy BMW turbo build including S54 turbos, Audi turbos converted to RWD and many Volvos. Seen many cars with close to or over 1000hp with these gs6-53dz transmissions. You should definitely be able to retrofit one onto a 335d as easy as any other auto to manual swap seeing as the gearbox fits the bolt patterns already as the 330d and 335d use exactly the same base engine.

    It's the JBD tuning box that screws with the gear changes. An ECU tune works much better on this engine.

    I've got the E92, 335dM-Sport. I drove the E92 M3 before I got this one, and really, as a practical road-car, the 335dMS is much better. For starters - it's MILES cheaper to run. However, the massive torque makes it so easy to drive. The torque is huge - and all at very low, relaxed RPM, - none of that frenetic screaming, which is soooo uncool in a road-car. The six-speed auto works great too. The brakes are epic. I did have it mapped for a while (360bhp.), but in truth, the car just doesn't need it. It also caused the DPF to fail, which cost me big bucks - and when the new one clogged too, I had to have the mapping removed to allow it to regenerate, and never bothered to put it back on. My only criticism of the cars are the wheels with the really, REALLY stupid super-low profile tyres. These are hard as a dogs balls and cause the rims to crack.
    In the real world, these cars are very quick. Inside, you can't hear they are diesel - just a low grumble when you put your foot-down. It's all grunt - and no drama, and highly addictive...
    Mine's comeing-up for changing now - and I'm gutted. I'm hoping there is a 4-Series to suit.....!
