If it wasn't for sponsors we wouldnt have racing so I dont care that this is a commersial, it was a great video and a great race from the boys in the team!
when I was 7 i went to my first indy 500 this happened to be the one and as a seven year old the winner always has to be my favorite but now I've stayed loyal even if it is hard to watch him never get better then 5
What an awesome story, i watched the race but had no idea about the whole story behind the win. I remember Alex from the GP3, GP2 and Formula One days. They would always talk about how talented he was and to watch out for him in F1.
Alex got 2 laps out of 0.65 gal, well 1 and 2/3s or whenever Alex ran out of fuel on final lap, that alone is one of the most remarkable aspects of this story.
Five years late I know but that is from his F1 days when he was trained not to give up secrets. On his podcast he mentions in one episode that he once mentioned a new part development in an interview in his Caterham days and got a strike for it so at that point he was still sooo used to being tight lipped that he didn't think he could say the strategy.
Everybody complaining about this being a Oil commercial if that's how you feel, then your not appreciating the fact that this is free content for you to watch. Motor Trend does not back stab us and charge for their best content, you got to wait a month for the next installment but, that's a small price to pay considering the amount of time and resources it's takes to make one episode. Motor Trend probably makes the best free car content you can watch on TH-cam.
Its a shame he never truly got to race full time in F1. What he and the team managed to pull off that day was a hat trick. This video basically sums up all the magic that exists in motorsports.
(MGL Fan ) Alex is a great driver. I wish he would have gotten the backing to make a REAL effort in F1. It would be nice to have a strong American driver representing the United States at the very top of auto racing. Me too...
i just met alexander rossi with kimi Räikkönen 2 days ago when he came to Singapore!! for shell eco car challenge and this week Singapore f1 night race!
What a great story, I'm a little bit sad that racing has now become a fuel economy race, instead of all out power, but under the current rules, these guys did a great job of pushing it to the limit, really a well done mini-documentary. Domo
I love car videos and I'm happy to watch advertising that supports them, but when you blend it in and pretend that Castrol won the race, I'm not gonna waste my time watching that
At first I felt a little duped at the end when this all came crashing down as one big ad. I thought, "SERIOUSLY?" But then I thought about it and that's gotta be one of the best ads I've seen. At least it wasn't plastered all over and made too obvious. So although the plug felt REALLY out of place and unnatural I have to say I would like more of these. All-in-all... well done.
Great video motortrend love the part when he comes off turn 4 on the last and it's all quit and the fans are looking on you guys should more IndyCar stuff like this
I imagine it had something to do with how he was playing the throttle as he was getting a tow from the car in front of him (Dixon in this case). Just a theory.
I was about to mention that he should go and get an endorsement with Maxwell House. Because of the pitch quote "Good to the last drop". But he has Alaska Coffee Roasting Company.
Alex is a great driver. I wish he would have gotten the backing to make a REAL effort in F1. It would be nice to have a strong American driver representing the United States at the very top of auto racing.
May have been leaving it in top gear instead of downshifting - clutch in when entering corners instead of braking later into the corner, perfect line, better acceleration out of the corner - probably a combination of all those factors and of course drafting.
Don't forget the team let the driver down. After the first fueling failure the system should have been changed out. Waiting and failing a second time put the whole race in jeopardy!!
Things work a little different for big companies like this, they don't need ad revenue from the video, they have video sponsors. They don't give a fuck if they don't get the $400 from youtube ads.
Why do I not believe they use the same oil I can buy in the store. Every race car team I've seen legit interviews with used specially engineered oil for the extreme conditions of the engines. I would think this would be especially true in a car that redlines at like 15k rpms.
Nope. IndyCar rules state the oil you use in your engine must be purchasable from a store shelf. It is a cost cutting measure to prevent the teams doing what F1 does and changing oil every 2 minutes and generating different additives for their oils. The engines are designed with this in mind so there isn't a need for specialty oil.
I hate it when I get tricked into watching commercials, which is why Old Spice enhances confidence and commands female attention. And that’s a pretty fancy trick indeed, provided you always buy products only really cool men buy.
I bought all the stuff to go to Indy this year for the first time in February. I wouldn't dream of seeing Alonso in that race. So when that hit my phone, I think my heart skipped a bit. Like what went from seeing the Indy 500 for the first time, became seeing one of a few hundred thousand people that saw him race.
So I just watched a 13 min long oil commercial? Really? I mean great for the team, great story... but the fact that it is a oil commercial leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. Really Motor Trend? THIS is what you have sunk to? 50% of your videos are ads for MTOD and now THIS? If it wasn't for roadkill and drag week I would NEVER come back to this channel and WILL never come back other than for what I said above.
Chill dude, it's a great story and amazing win, and this video is free to all because of the sponsors. What the fuck do you expect? 100% free content with no sponsors/advertising? Do you mouth off like this when a commercial comes on the TV? Do you think your uninformed comment will make them change their business model? Try not only thinking about yourself when you open your mouth to criticize others...
I assure you, my mouth stays closed while I type. No i do not expect 100% FREE content. I run ad blocker but have the entire youtube site white listed so i will see ads so I do support creators. I am not angry it was sponsored, I am angry in HOW they did it. They could have done this whole video and left out the line that basically says that the only reason he won is because of Castrol. Then put in a screen at the beginning or at the end that says this story was brought to you by Castrol "providing racing winning performance" or some tag line. hell they could have run that screen at the start and end and they could have had a water mark on the video in the corner that said brought to you by Castrol.... I would have been fine with any and or ALL of my suggestions. What grinds my gears and gave me the cringe feeling is that they had this cool story and cool video that they could have provided to the fans and people like me would have said WOW how cool of Castrol to bring us this story... but no they chose to basically say "This team won the indy 500 because they used our oil" It just gets under my skin.
The tire company isnt claiming their victory saying their low roll resistance allowed him to coast to the finish. Honda didnt come out with a video claiming their victory because their engine got the great gas mileage. You dont see the Aero engineer claiming the victory because the aero of the car reduced air resistance... again the point im making is that I love the story, It was a great win. But it gets under my skin that in this video Castrol basically is trying to claim their win, rather than just sponsor a great video and put traditional ads before and/or after the video.
OK, yes, I admit it was totally cheesy at the end when they all plugged Castrol, and like you said, basically talked like the oil is what made them win the race. As a race fan I know that's bullshit and they are just saying that to plug their sponsor... That's okay with me - it's certainly nothing to get angry about. Maybe Castrol will give them more money for R&D because of this which in turn could help them win more races... It's bs politics but that's the way she goes...
Everyone is commenting about his "secret", the truth is that F1 and IRC cars both have fuel mapping options and many other controls integrated into the computers (all within the rules - including how fast the throttle response it)... it might just be something that he found works good with his driving style to make the extra MPG and doesn't want to let it out - he doesn't come to your job and tell you how to mop the floors or kick the bucket on you, let's not knock his talent as a professional either.
Well yeah, if you'd like to see it as Volkswagen then yes, you're right. But if those are seen as different companies wich they definetly are (no sharin or help at all, a huge fight against each other, where ever possible) then its either Porsche or Audi, Nissans Concept was just bullshit and Toyota needs some refinement, their times are competitive right now, and remember at le mans, where they lost everything in the last hour, but until then they were right at the top. I just like literally the driving on the edge in WRC, and i don'think its about the brands but rather about each individual driver and especialy about the course they are driving. At anytime everything can happen. I have to admit Porsche Cup and GT3 are the best classes, Porsche Cup, because those rookies miscalculate in some situations and GT3 because of the Balance of Performance
orgrimar96 Yea , but thats what happened to Porsche in the GT1 that burned down on the finish line and that is what makes this race so interesting. Racing one complete day and than still you can not be sure to win.
I just watched a 13 min oil commercial and I aint even mad.
more commercials like this plz!
I remember standing in the infield and hearing Rossi fly by on the last lap with no exhaust note !! It was my first Indy and a great one!!
If it wasn't for sponsors we wouldnt have racing so I dont care that this is a commersial, it was a great video and a great race from the boys in the team!
One of the few youtube ads that I've clicked on... and watched the whole thing. Thanx MT =)
when I was 7 i went to my first indy 500 this happened to be the one and as a seven year old the winner always has to be my favorite but now I've stayed loyal even if it is hard to watch him never get better then 5
Man, this is a topnotch commercial, but what an amazing win !!
Great strategy, great teamwork, great driver, well deserved
What an awesome story, i watched the race but had no idea about the whole story behind the win. I remember Alex from the GP3, GP2 and Formula One days. They would always talk about how talented he was and to watch out for him in F1.
Alex got 2 laps out of 0.65 gal, well 1 and 2/3s or whenever Alex ran out of fuel on final lap, that alone is one of the most remarkable aspects of this story.
The second he won the race I asked myself, "I wonder what motor oil they were using?"
I like to think when Rossi crossed the line, every F1 Team at Monaco, raised their eyebrows and thought, "We missed a great opportunity."
I don’t think they gave him a second thought.
Awesome film. Interesting strategy Alex, tell us how you did it! "Uh... I'd rather not say"
Such a brilliant win. So glad I was there to experience it!
A Hero Story! Fantastic Indy Race!
Congratulations
That was a spectacular documentary - I got goosebumps. Nice work!
Its a shame he never truly got to race full time in F1. What he and the team managed to pull off that day was a hat trick. This video basically sums up all the magic that exists in motorsports.
I worked the balloon crew that year and watched from turn 2's exit. I left with 60 laps to go to beat traffic. I'm still pissed that I didn't stay.
It truly is the greatest spectacle in motor racing.
I want to see more of these videos about race strategy, this was good.
You rolled the dice....and won!!
Castrol Edge approves this message.
AWSOME Video... Way to go ROSSI... NOTHING BUT HATERS OUT THERE....
(MGL Fan ) Alex is a great driver. I wish he would have gotten the backing to make a REAL effort in F1. It would be nice to have a strong American driver representing the United States at the very top of auto racing. Me too...
now only if NASCAR made me feel like the way I felt after watching this video.
Left turn, left turn, left turn.
i just met alexander rossi with kimi Räikkönen 2 days ago when he came to Singapore!! for shell eco car challenge and this week Singapore f1 night race!
สะหนา้รุ้
a work of art.
Simply epic, let the haters be salty.
What a great story, I'm a little bit sad that racing has now become a fuel economy race, instead of all out power, but under the current rules, these guys did a great job of pushing it to the limit, really a well done mini-documentary.
Domo
So wait, all this for a Castrol commercial? Well, shoot...
Looney Juice... LOL
I stopped watching after 2 minutes. Wtf motortrend.
So if you stoped watching because it's not entertaining why did you click on a car video lol
Good thing I just did a change with some Castrol edge today!
I love car videos and I'm happy to watch advertising that supports them, but when you blend it in and pretend that Castrol won the race, I'm not gonna waste my time watching that
Great combination of commercial and beautiful documentary footage. Well done!! Sponsors are definitely a must in Motorsport so it's all good.
Such a dramatic well done ad!
one word. EPIC!!
best oil commercial I've ever seen
Oil commercial or not, this was one AWESOME video. In my best Dave Colabro gravely voice, "WOW"!!!
All-in-all... well done.
Great video motortrend love the part when he comes off turn 4 on the last and it's all quit and the fans are looking on you guys should more IndyCar stuff like this
Wow! What an epic... advertisement?
motortrend take advice from your subs make more videos like this
just cut out the commercial for Castrol Edge. oh wait, there's no story left then...
Agreed. More stories like this and I will be sorely tempted to subscribe.
You can edit out the oil mentions and the story is still the same.
no it isn't. they start the whole thing with "the oil made us win".
who cares if its about the oil its still a fantastic story
great team and driving incredible win
Epic film. Way to go!!
Love this. So exciting to watch.
Awesome editing ❤🙌
That was a damn cool advertisement. So what was his secret?
diesel pro I knew it! But really, was it some obscure drafting?
I imagine it had something to do with how he was playing the throttle as he was getting a tow from the car in front of him (Dixon in this case). Just a theory.
Lift and coast
more commercials like this pls. this is sick
Solid soundbyte splice for "Castrol Edge" at 1:46 😂
Best commercial ever.
What a great video, I now have a huge urge to go out and buy me some Castrol Edge...and I don't even own a car.
Where those salty Honda Haters at?! Show yoself cuzz
well done!!! congratulations.....
This guy needs an f1 drive. He's no hamilton but a damn good driver
he drove for manor last year
Had one. I don't know why but I think he got the boot because he didn't have the money
Last year's Manor? He might as well have used a lawnmower.
I bet they used Pennzoil
I was about to mention that he should go and get an endorsement with Maxwell House. Because of the pitch quote "Good to the last drop". But he has Alaska Coffee Roasting Company.
DId anyone else hear when they added in alex saying "Castrol Edge"?? its right after 1:44, i laughed my ass off it was so obvious.
ส
bruh wtf. i just noticed that
LoL, i want to sub in "McDonalds Pancakes" instead
Alex is a great driver. I wish he would have gotten the backing to make a REAL effort in F1. It would be nice to have a strong American driver representing the United States at the very top of auto racing.
agrreed
Formula 1 isn't fair. You can be talented, but if you don't have many sponsors then you won't get a seat.
I was up in turn 3 for this a great race
Like a miracle!!
Michael has certainly been sampling that fine Andretti cuisine ;)
he should be racing for Haas F1
Chills!
When all this happened, I could just see it in the papers.....
“ “Alexander Rossi wins Indy...
‘Good To The Last Drop’. “
2:17 ad before what is apparently an ad....
Darn good video!
Best ever
Is anyone watching this after seeing him on the Amazing Race?
Very cool video@!
we all know how he won: by making his car lighter than the rules allow it. and paying the Fine afterwards. It trully is a winning strategy.
that fluke was that he realized he could draft off of the other cars.....
It had to be something a bit more than that. They already had done drafting behind his teammate earlier in the video.
Probably also found a line that was the most efficient
May have been leaving it in top gear instead of downshifting - clutch in when entering corners instead of braking later into the corner, perfect line, better acceleration out of the corner - probably a combination of all those factors and of course drafting.
Or a lower gear maybe? more efficient fuel burn, nobody would ever of thought of that! Lower gears are maped different, leaner...
Its been revealed the trick was pit lane gear.
I was there on turn 4 when he stopped and got out of his car
Don't forget the team let the driver down. After the first fueling failure the system should have been changed out. Waiting and failing a second time put the whole race in jeopardy!!
By the way, if you advertise on TH-cam, you must make the viewer awear. I believe 3 bloggers got sued for doing something like this.
What were they advertising? I must not have caught it
It's a castrol add.
Things work a little different for big companies like this, they don't need ad revenue from the video, they have video sponsors. They don't give a fuck if they don't get the $400 from youtube ads.
The Castrol bit is annoying but the rest of the video is very well done.
Anyone know the music from this?
His strategy was always to take the left turn
Maybe Gene Haas will hire Alexander Rossi next year for F1 now
Forza Alonso!!!
Trulli was faster.
That pass at 5:44 tho
Why do I not believe they use the same oil I can buy in the store. Every race car team I've seen legit interviews with used specially engineered oil for the extreme conditions of the engines. I would think this would be especially true in a car that redlines at like 15k rpms.

Perhaps he should have been drinking a quart of Castrol Edge in victory lane instead of milk?
Seriously?? An oil commercial?
Rossi might be coming back to F1 next year.
I hate it when I get tricked into watching commercials, which is why Old Spice enhances confidence and commands female attention. And that’s a pretty fancy trick indeed, provided you always buy products only really cool men buy.
Who come here after see Alonso going to drive for Indycar 500 in 2017 , instead of Monaco ?
Andi S me
I bought all the stuff to go to Indy this year for the first time in February. I wouldn't dream of seeing Alonso in that race. So when that hit my phone, I think my heart skipped a bit. Like what went from seeing the Indy 500 for the first time, became seeing one of a few hundred thousand people that saw him race.
BEST FUCKING VIDEO EVER!!!!
Would That Fit In My Honda?
Damn, one long commercial
So I just watched a 13 min long oil commercial? Really? I mean great for the team, great story... but the fact that it is a oil commercial leaves a really bad taste in my mouth.

I'll be right back - going to buy some Castrol Edge!
Without watching...I'm guessing that his winning strategy was, to go faster and turn left better than every other driver.
I WANT CASTROL MOTOR OIL
wow
Wow looks same strategy winning of dan wheldon
Alexander Rossi new favorite bye bye Helio
+McLaren please ask them for help
castrol edge lol 1:44
Bit much with the Castrol
so basically this was a fucking commercial for castrol oil
Indy, F1 and nascar are so freaking boring.... those long distance and rally races are way more interesting
Both WEC and WRC are a bore fest... Constant Volkswagen domination in both series... GT3 is where it's at
Well yeah, if you'd like to see it as Volkswagen then yes, you're right. Actually toyota lost it all in the last 3 minutes... :/ It was so painful to watch
orgrimar96 Yea , but thats what happened to Porsche in the GT1 that burned down on the finish line and that is what makes this race so interesting. Racing one complete day and than still you can not be sure to win.
xlf xie exactly. I watched the last f1 race (Monza i believe) and I was shocked how boring it was.
Alexanders story is great. You ruined it by making it a cheesy oil commercial.
Background music is too loud.
Now move on to Castrol beer with a pint glass made by Honda. Come on you know you want it. )
