    1. Absolutely agree. I hate those fake vents and all that overstyle caused by them. The Civic Type R might be a great hot hatch to drive, but imho it looks like a plastic toy for kids. Same with fake exhaust pipes.
    2. Larger wheels = heavier wheels = less rubber than can work less. When you look at race cars, they don't drive with 21 or 22 inch wheels, they use 18 inch wheels i think. And those big wheels even look good on most cars imho. Same with tuning cars with their suspension too low. To me it looks like the suspension is broken.
    3. Overall i'm not a fan of touch screens or touch elements in cars at all. Problem is: You can't use your muscle memory, it always takes the attention from the road for a short moment which imho is an unnecessary safety issue. You're not allowed to use phones or tablets while driving, because they distract the driver. Why is there one (or more) big tablet in almost every new car? Plus i think round instruments made from high quality materials look still way better than a flat screen.
    4. Same as all the fake vents. If you put a diffusor on a car make it at least work. And don't put it on non-sport versions of cars. It looks just stupid on an SUV, saloon or hatchback.
    5. Don't like SUVs at all, although i understand why people buy them (lots of space, high seating position). These cars are just too heavy and i don't like the proportions. The "normal" SUV shape just looks like a hatchback with bad proportions.
    B. It just looks bad and i don't know anyone who likes that new design language. Old BMWs had style and the grill fits the overall design of the car. It doesn't in the new 3 and 4 series. Saw an M4 a few days ago and it doesn't look any better in real life.

Yea, the look bloated. The normal boxy shape just looks strong and confident. Like moving statements. I don't like SUVs in general but boxy ones like the Durango Hellcat, GLE or (surprisingly) GLB look pretty neat. America needs more wagons though. I saw today a US Wagon (I guess 70s or 80s) here in germany, with wood on the side and chrome in the front. It looked so striking, so wide and long. I want a CT5-V wagon, a Challenger Magnum Hellcat, a Chevy wagon...all the wagons you can imagine. Counter arguments
    1. Fake vents get rid of negative space and create lines that can be tied together beautifully and when done right can make a caroookr more attractive.
    2. Different sized wheels are fine for the exact reason you said they're done. They improve the stance and give the car a rear wheel drive and thus a sportier look. They're also look more upscale as you dont see them on economy cars
    3. The problem with floating displays is not so much the floating factor but the fact that the screens themselves are ugly, they have big bezels, have low pixel density and just generally dont look as good as smartphone screens. Sometimes trying to fit a large screen into interior trim looks goofy because it looks like the automaker is trying to hide it. (The Venza implementation is terrible though)
    4. There is no counter argument
    5. Coupe rooflines are more aerodynamic which is why the Model X and Model Y have them. Also haveing a coupe roofline doesn't subtract from the taller ride height of an suv which is one of the main reasons people buy them. It also doesn't take away off road capability. It doesn't make the rear cargo area any less wide or deep which are the most important dimensions when taking into account cargo space. Coupe rooflines can subtract rear headroom but usually only children are put in the back of SUVs. The only other downside is that it subtracts feom the vertical space of a cargo area but coming from someone whose loaded hundreds of items into the back of suvs. That isnt an issue as most items that would require that extra cargo area height are layed flat anyways. For example tvs and chairs. coupe suvs look more unique which can be a good thing and when a performance suv is a coupe it adds to the performance look in my opinion.

Problem is that they don't work on the current line-up of cars that otherwise have a very horizontal approach to design. They'd have to completely rethink how they do design the cars to maybe make it work ...

3:09 Staggered wheels have been a thing for a long time. Almost every Chevy Corvette generation has had a staggered setup and for most mid-engine Ferrari's they have staggered wheels as well. In the 60's and 70's many people would customize muscle cars to have a staggered setup for more aggressive stance and for drag setups.

The problem with BMWs is not the size of the grilles, it's the implementation. The csl hommage and the vision 100 are proof of this... and to be fair to BMW, they are moving forward in terms of design, you can hate them, you can insult them - but you can't ignore them.

    • @DefinitelyNotEmma
      @DefinitelyNotEmma 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Agreed. Also the grille isn't that huge, compare it to other manufacturers, it's basically a square in the middle, weheras other manufacturers like Toyota or Audi have huge "holes" in the front.

  • @zero00-100
    @zero00-100 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

3:34 For the BMW the problem is more the tire profile and the amount of difference in size variation. If they did 19"'s in front and 20"s in the back it would look fine. However them making a larger variation in size makes the design look out of place.

Two things. 1. Look at the 2020 Dodge Ram screen integration. I think it's one of the best Large format screens yet. 2. On a rear wheel drive car having a larger wheel shortens the aspect ratio or profile of the sidewall of the tire. This allows the tire to have less deflection and less movement when accelerating and turning allowing for a sharper feel. It has more of a mechanical advantage than you let on.

IMHO car design is in a very bad place at the moment. Every new car is extremely overdesigned with no regard for actual aestetics or how the car will age. Also designs are converging to the extreme, meaning that the companies have to go to ridiculous lengths to differentiate their cars (that's why the new BMW front looks so jarring).
Everything is so samey and no one really innovates anymore, which is kinda sad. Only in the electric segment is where I see anything close to experimentation and/or clean designs.
Having dabbled in design myself, all this has been bumming me out for a few years now.

You are not right at one point. The actual reason why manufacturers have different sized wheels is because of handling. All 4 wheels of the car have the same rolling circumference which equals out of the tire height and the wheel size. When you have a smaller diameter wheel at the front you can have a thicker tire for better cornering performance. Sorry for my bad english I'm German😅

Love the video. Here are some thoughts on a few of the trends you're calling out.
Diffuser abuser - Look at unlimited time attack cars. I believe this is what the designers are trying to emulate by calling so much attention to the "diffuser" with the use of color. Diffusers need to be long and low for maximum effect.
SUV Coupes - people like the look of a coupe, but are tired of getting blasted by the headlights of all the monster trucks on the road.
BMW Grill - Everyone is doing it! Lexus is the worse offender in my mind, but BMW made it just a bit uglier. I suspect the idea is that if we are going to have frontal area we are going to control the airflow touching it. This cannot be done without the opening.
    Keep up the good work!

    1. place plastic pieces filing holes is an EPA and marketing after thought following the engineering choices to give the company a variety of options for configuring the end result. you wanna make more than 1 front bumper or just have different panels for the openings? this decreases cost. i hate fake vents too but some of what you've mentioned aren't fake vents at all.
    2. wheel diameter absolutely has a lot to do with grip. if a tire can't absorb impact it will bounce, ride more worse, and be more prone to damage. more sidewall in the front actually does provide more grip in the same way more sidewall in the back on drag cars provides more grip.
that's just the first 2 issues i've noticed in your complaints.
you know design but you need to brush up on the engineering.

Great video! There are indeed quite some trends that are unnecessary. However, there are also vents that are not used to cool. There are also vents that channel the air in order to smoothen the airflow around the car and even some batteries of electric cars get cooled by the airflow. They just don’t need that big air intakes to cool a battery. The same thing applies to the SUV Coupés. The Tesla Model X has a Coupé roofline to reduce the air drag.
I my personal opinion there are also some trends I jus don’t care about. The infotainment display just floating there for me is acceptable in cheaper cars like the Renault Clio. The new grill design of BMW is a thing of personal preference and I often heard that it’s growing on people. I for that matter do like it.

I mostly agree with you. Apart from the Supra, because at least the vents on the sides ad a lot to the car visually. Although, of course, real vents to cool the brakes would've been even cooler.
My most disliked trends (which I'd love to hear your thoughts on) are as follows:
    1) Bloatedness: For whatever reason, it's trendy for cars to look massively bloated. Look at the current Mondeo and then look at the one that was made 20 years ago. The Polestar 2 could have been a future design classic, but Polestar chose to make it a few inches taller than necessary and throw on cheesy 80's looking plastic fenders to make it look SUV-like. I'm absolutely sure that if you in 10 years time would show a hundred people a photo of a Polestar 2 and a Saab 9000 MKII, and most people will probably guess that the Saab is the newer vehicle. Things have gone so far that I'd say that the best looking sedans on the market today, apart from Alfa Giulia, are Volvos. Yes, frumpy effing Volvo make sleeker cars than their own bespoke performance brand. HOW!?!
    2) SUV's: Holy fucking shit, am I tired of these motorized Hapsburg chins. Everyone pretends to care about the environment and safety, then they buy these draggy, heavy behemoths which are statistically more likely to kill others, that are more likely to end up in accidents and are less efficient. All in the name of not bending your damned knees and virtue signaling.
    3) Opel-fronts: Since basically forever, sports cars have had their headlights mounted up on the hood. From Ferrari's of the 1940's to the popup headlights of the 70's to the beauty of the Ferrari 575 and the two first versions of the Jaguar F-type. Yet now, for whatever reason sports cars are getting headlights that look like... well, 90's Opels. Seriously, look at the new F-Type face lift and tell me you don't see an Opel Vectra or Calibra.

What bothers me about the different sized wheels in the m3/m4 is that it actually does not make it more dynamic since the wheel as a whole is the same size as the rear one. Its just that the front wheel has a smaller rim and more rubber... You could argue that they know ppl might not like the difference and replace them for same sized set
