What's interesting to me is that frutiger aero doesn't even have its own actual genre, all frutiger aero music is essentially just music from the era when frutiger aero was commonly used and popular I find it neat that people started trying to interpolate a visual style into a music genre cause "frutiger aero music" really does sound like how frutiger aero looks
Its true, it was a never a music style, that like came up with music inspired by times new roman font simply became someone want. Its creating a fake sound of the past that never existed.
Frutiger Aero in my mind sounds a lot more "aethereal", ambient, and "glassy", with lotsa string pads and sparkling accents. Remember that Windows Vista startup sound? And the Wii's menu music.
I think it’s more down to the theory, witha few different genre interpretations fitting. You’re thinking more of a vaporwave sound, where many may think of this more jazzy feel.
@@augusto7681 Frutiger Aero wasn't "a style" at all until people started looking back and retrospectively assigning the term to the broader era aesthetic in retrospect. Which you can do with music as well. It's all just associations and subjective interpretation. People weren't explicitly making "Frutiger Aero" anything back in the day - and there's no authority today on what the exact specific boundaries of the aesthetic are. Also I don't think anyone is inventing anything - obviously things from back then styled as what we call "Frutiger Aero" now sounded a certain way, whether that's software UI, ads, or any other kind of multimedia.
That surprised me too! But apparently it’s true. I know that Brian Eno composed the Windows 95 startup sound, and that Fripp & Eno are longtime collaborators, but I hadn’t heard that Fripp made the Vista version.
I absolutely loved this video! I loved the explanation of all the chord progressions and the different ways to think about chords (i.e. how the 9 is basically the 2). The explanation of the drumbeats and also the really thorough explanation of the synths used at the end was really cool and you captured all the elements of frutiger aero super well. I went to your channel and was shocked when I saw you only had 11k subscribers! I just subscribed and I hope to see more of your wonderful content in the future :)
I still haven't finished the video, and I'm loving it a lot! But I believe you missed something very important: you should definitely talk about timbre! The chords are very important and your highlights are great, but you wouldn't get the frutiger aero vibes if you played the same examples on a organ or a heavily distorted guitar. The gentle and floaty synth pads does wonders in this genre!
@@jim__jam I don't have any samples so I won't be able to help you if that, sorry, but I had some good luck with 3x Osc and using sine/triangle wave as my base, ofc adding a ton of effects later. I'd recommend you looking for tutorials for the 3x Osc because it's surprisingly really powerful. There is a guy by the name of Busy Works Beats that made a "trippy" one and I modified it a bit to sound more synthwavy for a film soundtrack and it came out nice, so I believe you could reach a frutiger aero sound with this same base as well! Good luck!
@@jim__jam i think my previous comment got deleted for it mentioning someone in specific, but you can look up dreamy/liminal/gentle pads/pluggnb pads in splice and get the pads that you're looking for also the sample pack in this videos description looks pretty good but it doesn't seem to have any pads and seems a little spendy for a pack
This is such a good vid!!! I find myself gravitating to this aesthetic more these past months and it made me realize that Frutiger Aero really captured the feeling of an optimistic future we never wound up getting (but ill keep dreaming of it anyway)
also this type of aesthetic in nintendo music is very influenced by japanese jazz fusion groups, and 80s music... check out casiopea, takanaka, hosono, cornelius... theres a lot of them...
You can really tell that you approached this sound with a lot of attention for detail and love for it, i've watched a lot of analysis on frutiger aero but this one stands VERY tall above the rest 🖤 thank you for providing such a helpful resource!!
one of my favourite aspects of this music which I don't think you touched on is the sound design. Soft saw pads are so relaxing, but what I like the most is the bloopiness. Short sharp sine wave or square wave arps with lots of reverb and delay. sounds like the water part of those frutiger aero images

Great breakdown! Glad to see this style get a real analysis. I think that C9(11,13)no3 chord is most easily expressed as Bbmaj7/C. I think it feels more like a dominant chord in F this way, but maybe that just makes for more fun modulation ideas 😂 I liked the section on drum sounds but I would have loved to see a broader section on sounds or instrumentation - to me, keys are an integral part of so many of these tracks, whether it’s mellow EP or bright piano! But you covered so much here already that it’s not a big deal. Great video!
