  • I love tools. And sometimes getting a tool that you yet to have a need for can be an adventure in search of a problem. Enjoy!

I had a mechanical contact tachometer. It was chrome and AC Delco branded. Sold it as an antique.

Love the vibe - always wanted one of those but it never happened. Appreciate this video very much!

We had one of those portable tachometer gizmos ( probably from the '50s) at my last job....I actually used it a few times...

I have one of those too! I have a model machinist lathe and I thought I’d use it with that. But I never did. I might even have two of them. I have a vernier protractor too. Two of them. But just cheap Chinese ones.

I learned from this video. I didn't know how lathes work. Thank you.

Most (conventional - manual) lathes have a gearbox, with about 20 speeds give or take, to set the rotation speed of the chuck (which holds the part you're working on). Setting the rotation speed, measured in revolution per second, is important as different types of materials cut better at certain speeds, and the diameter of the part also determins how many revolutions per second are needed (less for large diameter, more for small diameters).
Some very small lathes don't have a gearbox, which is what Fran probably has.

I use my Tacho a lot for synchronising conveyor speeds.

At the Little Machine Shop (and other places) you can buy a Hall Effect tach for rather cheaply.

I can send you a model train engine and we could see the rpm of the motor versus the drive wheel to calculate the pulses to achieve 4 Chuffs per revolution to drive a sound board. Maybe, if you want. ???
