  • A My Life in Africa 14 day very wet tour of Botswana, in this episode we finally reach Kubu Island, we took the main route from Gweta to Kubu Island over some very very wet terrain.
The driving was tough to say the least! Only spending one night at Kubu Island, although beautiful our minds were uneasy about the day that was to follow, GETTING OFF THE PANS!
My Life in Africa offer overland safari's with unique and personal experiences into Botswana, a different take on what a tour in Botswana is like. From the roads traveled to the wildlife seen along the way. Botswana is a diverse country with so much to offer!

Awesome vid, so much rain that now (Feb. 2017), the most of parks have been "closed" temporarily because they are simple impassable, Moremi 3rd bridge road to Xene, Xakanana, Hippo pools and paradise pools are inaccessible.

Yup, we were there in December in all that rain as well, we have another tour in April so we are hoping that it has dried up a little for us before we go :-)

great film well done you have given me a good idea of what it can look like when its wet... I am doing a very similar trip in april...maybe...we will see when we are there whether we can reach 3rd bridge or nxai pan...regards Christian

Hi Christian, with the heavy rains this year it will probably be a little worse. Although reaching both 3rd bridge and Nxai Pan shouldn't be a problem although very muddy. The moremi reserve is one again open to tourists. We'll also be in Botswana in April, keep a look out for our vehicles and come and say hi of you spot us :-)

Sounds like a fantastic trip, i think most of the deeper water will have dropped down by then. The road from 3rd Bridge to Xakanaxa might be a challenge to get through if you're going that way. Travel safe and most importantly have fun. Cheers from a warm South Africa...

We have Kubu Island on our radar for early Oct 2022 during from Nata (down there from Kasane). Expecting a bit drier than your visit.
Routing to Kubu Isl …. ?
Where is Park Gate … ?
Where can one pay the Correct Fee … ?
Afterwards we want to traverse Direct as poss to Gweta & onwards to Bains BaoBabs …….. drivable ?
    Thnx

Sounds like you going to have a blast, yeah i think your conditions will be a lot different and very dry, expect a lot of dust!
There are a few ways to get to Kubu, your most direct is going to be to follow the route south just after Nata, you cannot miss the signboard. There is no real park gate to speak of you can make payment when arriving at Kubu in cash as well as purchase wood if needed. The route to bains across the pan should be drivable but we would recommend checking out the conditions before you commit to the route.

When is the best time to do the pans...? For how long does the water stay after good rains...?
