    These rifles are so very accurate with a .429 cast as is bullet with BP or smokeless. The slightly necked case expands so nicely into the chamber when fired that it keeps the open frame area easy to clean, whether using BP or smokeless. It is my favorite lever action.

      @littlehouseguy7782  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I have heard that before about the necked case keeping the internals much cleaner. If you watch my chapter two video with this piece, a significant improvement in my opinion, you'll see that I get better performance with FF Goex, not 3F. I have also shot smokeless reloads in this using Unique.

    Awesome shooting Eric! Beautiful rifle and amazing to see retained accuracy over a string of shots with blackpowder.

      Thanks, but you give me too much credit! I did run some wet patches down the barrel halfway through the course for some fouling control. Also, I did miss a few shots, but I chose not to put those in the video! Nevertheless, I did practice on some off days on that course and learned to control the piece better. However, I only practiced our "short" distance course, which focuses on shots between 70 and 110 yards. The guys surprised me when they said we were doing the "long" course, which focuses on shots primarily over 100 yards.

    Excellent shooting Eric. Beautiful engraved Henry.

    • @littlehouseguy7782

      Thanks! I still need to spend more time with it on paper and really "learn" it right. Another guy in my group agrees with your assessment of shooting the necked .44-40 cartridge in the Henry over the .45 Colt just because of the better seal it makes, especially when shooting black powder. I try to keep the internal mechanism in the loading frame as clean as possible since I've been told not to mess with it by opening it up and trying to clean the internals. I try to always clean out the bore with the gun upside down so that any loose fouling falls out the top and not down into the loading mechanism.

      yes, I clean the same way with my British made Snider-Enfield and Springfield trapdoors. It is easier to clean the Remington Rolling Blocks from breech to muzzle, like a bolt action rifle. I am still looking for a 1871 RRB in 50-70, rather than a Springfield 1868.

      I am not sure if there was/is any standard. That is the way I shoot the gun the best. It does feel a bit awkward for me holding it out in front since it has no wooden forestock. Additionally, the follower needs to continue to come back while shooting. Moreover, if I were shooting that gun at a high rate, the barrel would heat up. I have seen people hold the gun in the traditional way and wear a leather glove to support the rifle, moving their hand from time to time as not to interupt the follower.

      Eric I want to buy a lever rifle but now torn up on which one to get. 1860 Henry, 1866 yellow boy, or 1873 Winchester? also should I get uberti or Winchester? I like 44-40 but also torn up by the convenience of 357/38? any advice or experience sharing would be appreciated.

    • @pommel47
      @pommel47 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      CCC, I own Uberti 1860, 1866, and 1873. I like the Henry the best in 44-40. The necked case seals the chamber and keeps fouling from blowing back on the cartridge case and into the loading frame. It is also the most accurate. Straight necked cases like .45 LC are not as accurate and have blow-back of fouling.
      The Uberti Henry is available in brass or iron(color case hardening). Mine shoots well with BP +pure lead .429 bullets or smokeless + hard lead bullet. You can cast .429 wheel weight alloy bullets with a Lee mould,
      and smokeless loads with Lee 44-40 dies.

    • @littlehouseguy7782
      @littlehouseguy7782  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How could I have missed your question?!?! I have heard others tell me the same as J.L. Roberts in that the necked .44-40 cartridge is ideal since it seals better in the chamber. I prefer to shoot mine with black but have also loaded smokeless loads with Unique powder. I am biased towards traditional black powder rounds since that is what I mostly do- shoot black powder rifles and muskets. However, I understand that black powder is not for everybody, so the 357/38 might be better. On the other hand, if you get an 1860 Henry, don't you want it to be as close as possible to how it was in the good ol' days?

    Looks like a fun competition. What’s it called? Is this part of the North south skirmish? I’m just getting into cowboy action shooting. Limited by location(NJ) and funds.

    • @littlehouseguy7782
      @littlehouseguy7782  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish I were part of NSSA, but they don't appear to have any chapters here out west in Southern California. This was just one of our trail-walk matches, where you get only one shot off-hand at selected dingers. There is a cowboy action shooting club on the property here as well. CAS for me is fun to watch, but I tend to prefer a slower rate of fire at longer distances when I enjoy my own pieces. Yes, I hear that NJ is quite strict, even for black powder non-cartridge arms as well.

    • @littlehouseguy7782
      @littlehouseguy7782  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      For that competition, yes. Our walkthrough competition is an off hand competition in which you walk along a course and only get one shot each at the dingers on your assignment page. I didn't do so great that day. I think I only got about half of them. Yeah, normally you can get the dinger you missed by the second or third shot based on where you saw your misses go. However, then the competition would be too easy. You have to really know how to estimate yardage.

    Think of buying a Uberti one, in the shop at around 1490$ here, what are they like regards cleaning reasonable or a pain in the butt! , do all these 1860s remakes run center fire and smokless as well as BP. As also thinking of reloads!

    • @littlehouseguy7782
      @littlehouseguy7782  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Ubertis are modern guns, so they can shoot black powder as well as smokeless. Folks don't recommend disassemblying the piece, so I clean it the best I can, but yes, it is messy and shows it. However, people like the patina the receiver has now. My chapter two video with this piece on my channel is a modest improvement to this video and one that I would recommend more.

    • @littlehouseguy7782
      @littlehouseguy7782  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, it's because I'm not a trained shooter. I normally just load and shoot one at a time, so I'm not used to shooting with the magazine. This was almost three years ago, so I think I've grown as a shooter since then. However, anything that comes with tactical training or loading more quickly, I've just not examined.

    why is it that you support the gun like that while shoot ? just curious, hahah you seem like quite a good shot

    • @littlehouseguy7782
      @littlehouseguy7782  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I originally started shooting with a heavy flintlock rifle as a teenager, so that was how I was able to support it by using my elbow as a support on my stomach. That old habit has just stuck around. However, I do see a variety of off hand shooting positions with other black powder guys, some of them strange to me. I guess the best way to hold a gun is the way that allows you to get the most hits. Also, this piece has no forestock, further making it uncomfortable for me to hold it. I have, however, begun practicing more off hand in the traditional way. Other than my most recent video with the Maynard carbine, I use the traditional hold in the last 4 videos I've done, I believe.
