Synovial sarcoma: Encouraging others to trust their instincts

  • Jo Georgiou was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma in 2021 after finding a lump on her leg in 2016.
In order to get rid of the cancer, the 31-year-old from north London now has to have her leg amputated.
Jo wants her story to inspire others to trust their instinct and push for care. She said: "I always feel like, if in your gut you know something is wrong with your body, something is wrong."
Soft tissue sarcomas make up 1% of all cancers. Synovial is one of the rarest subtypes of soft tissue sarcoma - making up about 0.02% of the soft tissue sarcomas diagnosed in England. About 80 people a year are diagnosed with synovial sarcoma in England.

I have this in my ankle. Just found out last week. I'm older and Drs thought it was fluid. It started to hurt when i walk so i went to an orthopedic. After x ray, an MRI,then another MRI with contrast, i was preferred to an orthopedic oncologist. Haven't got an appointment yet. They are suppose to call me. So in the mean time i did make an appointment with an oncologist near by. The orthopedic oncologist is 120 miles from my home. I will go if i have to. But I'm hoping i can get treatment closer to home. My lump is large, but nothing compared to hers. But mine is in a compact area. I was told it's slow growing so you can have it many years before it starts to csuse you trouble. I myself thought it was just my age. I understand it's a rare cancer an is usually found in younger adults. I'm seventy,an it it has spread, i just don't know if my tired body can handle all the chemo and radiation. An if that won't do me in also. A lot to think about in the coming weeks.😢

God bless you❤ I just had a Lipocoma removed from my inner thigh today and I’m researching liposarcoma. My doctor brushed it off and I had to be very aggressive to get it seen and removed. Researching liposarcoma with the hopes that I won’t have to say that word in real life.

How disturbing is this story for patients without private health insurance. The sicker you the less likely you are able to afford it as in my case.
I had to call an ambulance last week in Australia where I now live and had to wait for a nurse call back to assess if I was critical enough to warrant an ambulance and that they'd send to A&E by taxi instead. Then she asked me another raft of questions to ascertain if I was well enough to go by taxi. WTF!
Having only been out of hospital for a week with a very low hemoglobin level, living with just my wee dog, my sister overseas, my brother way up north I felt so lonely, desperate, sad and very breathless, but I was not short of breath enough to warrant an ambulance but almost too sick to take a taxi. I was more worried about my dog being looked after as all his support systems were away as well. As usual A&E was a nightmare! I wasn't seen by a doctor for over six hours!
I hope your surgery went well. You have an amazing attitude with great support, which is a blessing. I wish you well.

I have had problem and everyone just shrugged me off. I just went to a new Podiatrist and I have a large tumor in my left ankle and smaller one in right ankle now going for MRI when I can get it scheduled. Took me 6 months to get an appointment with the podiatrist. Your right you know your body and doctors should listen. Seems they are called practicing physicians cause they are practicing on me 😢

I also have lumb on my thighs. I found it in 2015 . I went to see doctor and he told me that it's not that serious if you want we can operate it and if you don't want it's ok but maybe it will become something serious in my future. He also said that it's not a cancer. After hearing about surcoma cancer I'm in doubt. I don't know what to do. I love to dance . Dance is my soul. That is the only thing that keeps me worried

I had the exact same problems she had, and I live in the U.S. and pay for my health insurance. I've been complaining for many years about pain in my body and leg. I was told it was all in my head and then tossed from Doctor to Doctor. I finally found someone who believed me a few months ago and sent me to the correct doctors. They did an MRI and found a large mass in my leg. I still have to wait until the end of June to see the orthopedic oncologist for more testing. I also have a lot of other stuff going on that if I had gotten proper medical care sooner, it wouldn't be as bad now. I ended up having to have a hysterectomy and might need reconstruction of my large bowels all because none of my doctors believed me about the pain in my stomach. It should have been treated long before I needed the hysterectomy. My husband and I pay out our asses for health insurance and co pays and medications. At this point, we're about ready to get divorced so I can get on medicaid. It's so expensive. I'm hearing these same complaints from other patients I've talked to. And the wait time to get in to see a specialist is months.
