- China is set to build its first electric vehicle (EV) factory in the European Union, specifically in Hungary. This move, led by BYD, one of the world's leading EV manufacturers, marks a significant milestone as the first major BRIC investment in the EU automotive sector.
The planned factory will be located in Szeged, near Hungary's border with Serbia. This strategic location is part of Hungary's broader initiative to position itself as a global hub for EV production. The Hungarian government has actively courted foreign investment, offering financial incentives, tax breaks, and infrastructure development, particularly in cooperation with China through the Belt and Road Initiative.
BYD's entry into the European market comes at a time when the EU is imposing tariffs on Chinese EVs to protect local manufacturers from what it perceives as unfair competition due to Chinese government subsidies. Despite these challenges, Chinese automakers like BYD are motivated to establish a local presence to mitigate the costs and risks associated with exporting vehicles from China.
This move is part of China's broader strategy to expand its influence and economic footprint in Europe, which aligns with the objectives of BRICS to enhance global influence and economic cooperation among its members. The factory is expected to create thousands of jobs and significantly contribute to Hungary's economy, reinforcing its status as a leader in the technological revolution in the automotive industry.
In addition to BYD, other Chinese automakers are exploring similar opportunities across Europe. For example, Chery plans to start production in Spain, while Leapmotor is leveraging existing facilities in Poland. These investments highlight the growing footprint of Chinese automotive technology in Europe and the strategic importance of the region in the global EV market.

Hungary is setting a new standard for the EU. While the rest of the EU is focused on the past (looking at YOU - Poland!), Hungary is focused on the future. That is just one of the reasons why Hungary did not accept the "migrants". Mr. Orban knew that they would DESTROY Hungary the way they have destroyed the other countries that accepted the "migrants". Hungary is doing what is good for Hungary and in so doing, gaining experience in tech sectors it has little experience in. The EU has done everything in its power to destroy what economic strength its countries had and the results are a group of countries uncompetitive in today's world. Multinationals know how to survive regardless of their birth. Isolation will eventually destroy a country. Staying competitive means getting involved, learning, optimizing and using the sources at hand. It also means the country needs to improve education, infrastructure, and have governmental support in sectors it feels it can compete in. Where it can't compete, it should take advantage of price to keep inflation in check.

I don’t think Hungary would qualify for BRICS membership. Anyway if they can make separate trading deals with China, Russia and other countries why upset the rest of EU when they don’t need to. Currently BRICS has announced they are slowing down membership as it takes time to process the requests. When they will open it back up again, they haven’t said.

i still remembered that the common people asked to end corruption during the 2 sessions, so the gov started an anti corruption campaign on 2009, while the world laughed at them, but in around a year, they investigated 6k+ people and prosecuted many that shocked the world. this was the beginning of a new era, where 90%+ people actually believe in their gov.
this effort to end corruption didnt end... just last year, they prosecuted 43+ people, even many of these people are retired seniors now.

I am not aware of any Chinese subsidies for EV manufacturing. If you are going to say that they exist, you have an obligation to describe what they are, the amount, and how much they impact the vehicle cost.
@@charlescarmichael2444 - Even China admits it subsidizes EV vehicles. It does so by building plants, giving them financial and marketing expertise, taking partial ownership, supplying China made (reduced cost) batteries and parts, etc. It costs China approximately $13,000 to build an EV but it sells for $45,000 in EU. So China makes a great profit, and in doing so gets its initial subsidies back but EU doesn’t consider that. Nor does EU consider USA $7,000 reduction on US EV’s a subsidy but says it is an “investment”…. How you look at it, depends on what side of the fence you sit.
Even as a member of NATO and E.U., Hungary is in many ways considered the "odd" man of Europe. Soon, they will try every which way possible to bar Hungary-made Chinese EV's into their markets. People may say it goes against the spirit of the "union." Problem is, when even laws and regulations have been discarded, the "spirit of the union" can be swept under the rug. Perhaps, more EV plants in those powerhouses such as Germany, France, Spain can soothe European anxiety.
