A very big Plus for Campagnolo is that the ergo can be completely dismantled and serviced and ratchets replaced. As the saying goes "when Shimano is wearing out Campagnolo is wearing in"
I wouldn't say it's a BIG plus, I mean I have had a set of Shimano Ultegra 6600 since 2001 if I remember correctly and I used that bike for riding to work and racing for 13 years and then lent it to my Nephew and now it's being used by my shop assistant... and we all agree it's got the nicest smoothest shifting of any group set we have ever used... and even though the shift levers have never been serviced it's still running fine. With that kind of reliability I have certainly had my money's worth.
Totally agree with you about the annoyance of the thumb shifter when in the drops. I've got Chorus on my bike and my thumbs always have to do gymnastics to downshift from the drops. The one feature I absolutely love is the "power shift" (I think that's what it's called) where if you're in the big ring up front and want to maintain the same cadence but shift to the little ring, pressing both thumb levers at the same time shifts the front and the rear to a similar ratio. Perfect for when you turn and find yourself on a climb!
After a severe hand injury in 2004 I went to Campy as the shift set up is better for my hand. Campy is just superb in my opinion, notchier shifting, better looking and exquisitely crafted. I have Shimano on my MTB and it's superb off road btw. Let your dog eat grass, they eat it to help with their digestion.
Campag is just beautiful to look at, positive gear changes , the choice most riders would make if they were not sponsored .... an Italian frame without is plane wrong ... good vid
A couple more thing to add to the Campag pros are you can micro shift the front mech and it lasts for ages. I've just replaced my Campag group set after 18 years. And in that time I only ever replaced the Campag cables twice. The Campag cons are the price and yes the down shifting when your in the drops. And last of all its almost impossible to find a good spec bike with top of the range Campagnolo on it. I'm not saying anything bad about Shimano as I have that on all my bikes now, and love it (I couldn't afford Campagnolo on the rebuild and the race bike has Shimano so when for that on the training bike.).
I think Campag is the best of the two. I have Campag record mechanical and I love it. The cassettes for record/super record are a rip off though, I use the chorus ones which are all steel rather than a mix with titanium, so they should actually last longer also.
I luv it when on the big ring pushing the right button for a second then the left gets you an easier gear and the other way round (harder)...it's THE coolest thing about eTap 👌
i have used both Campagnolo and Shimano in the past and currently knocking out circa 15,000 kms a year just keeping fit, shimano is relativly cheap to buy but also wears out pretty quick, so i guess one Campagnolo rear mech would last one year instead of buying 2 shimano, on the other hand i have a pair of camping scirocco wheels that over 4 years have done around 60,000 kms, shimano lasted for 3 months..
Who changes gears during a sprint? What do you I know, I still ride downtube shifters. Try Simplex friction shifters. Best shifters ever. Thanks for reading.
Just adding my two cents. I've ridden both Campag and Shimano and I find Campag to be better just for the fact that you can feel when you've changed to a bigger gear and for someone that's hard of hearing, that feel is what assures me. But as you said Cam, it just comes down to what the rider themselves want but I'd be slightly bias and would have to say definitely go with Campag
there are substantial metallurgical differences; Campy is superior, so much so that I use Campy chains on my Shimano DA system, as well as 1190 SRAM cassette. Shimano os faster and more vague, but its best chains start wearing out week 1, vs 3700-4000 kms to campy limit of 132.6 mm spacing between 6 links...Yes my DA with Campy sounds clunkier even if fast, as that rock solid chain resonates more than the Shimano noodle!
SRAM is sort of the best of both worlds. No weird thumb lever to downshift and you can't accidentally shift while pulling the brakes if your hand twists.
Campagnolo! A company known and famous for cycling with tremendous heritage in the sport! And I much prefer this over a company famous for fishing reals! And there’s nothing like Campys carbon fiber Grupo it is a work of art. And the ergo power levers are the most comfortable. Campy !❤
I changed from shimano to campa. The hoods of the 6700 shimano where to chunky in my opinion. Liked the ergonomics of the campa hoods much more. I also like the thumb shift more. Not a fan of using the brake lever to shift but that is just personal preference I guess. But shimano sells the complete groupsets to such a low price to the bike manufacturer that it is nearly impossible for Campa and SRAM to really compete. But to be fair shimano is also producing great groupsets.
Huh? If you are in the target gear before start sprinting, doesn't it affect your acceleration? Since you the torque needed is likely higher. It's like a car accelerating at the wrong gear (high).
Need some advice/help. Im a beginner rider and want to upgrade my wheels. Any advice on what I should upgrade too? I'm a student so cant really afford to be spending £00's and £00's on them but can afford maybe £100-£200 on a set. Love the vids, keep it up and smash the race today.
As for changing when on the drops the EPS system has little mini buttons that you can position where you want them if memory serves me correctly so that shouldn't be an issue unless it's the cable version you're using. Only used Shimano once before going to Campag but i have to say the Shimano shift change is so much better. Campag has it's pluses too though so i'd probably call it a draw there. Edit: Aaah you covered it right at the end! Yeah i'm sure the EPS system has like another two positions you can set up with little mini shift buttons under the bar tape. One down low that serves the purpose you mention for a sprint preparation and another you can have for shifting even if you're on the tops of the bars.
I have ridden all of them , top shimano and top campy, no doubt is the better , superior brand IMO, no only that , there's no comparision in quality, and they look great too, oh yeah and lot easier to rebuild
Yep. Looks nice but terrible ergonomics for shifting during sprinting. I've owned all the big brands. Sram is ergonomically the best for feedback and sprinting. Shimano is smooth and refined. Campagnolo looks nice and works reasonably but front shifts especially are awful and it's impossible to shift accurately when sprinting. I don't think I'd chose campagnolo again. It's just paying more for less.
Hope you can try electronic shifting soon. I have the latest Ultegra R8050 and it’s brilliant. I’m never getting mechanical again. Could be eTap or EPS aswell, not a fanboy of Shimano, bike was just supplied with it
Hello Are there any parts on your bike you have to replace regularly or maintain? And how many kilometers do you ride a week on average? Would love to see a video about this kind of stuff. Props from Germany
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Says the guy riding an Italian bike with a Shimano drivetrain. I always thought the rule was Italian bike/Italian wheels...Now with that rule, I am safe...got Campy wheels on my Italian bike!!
I agree on the sensitivity of the thumb shifter, EPS solves that really. However, it gives you the option of three gear changes and they are instant. The Shimano I have to push release and then change for just one gear change. But whilst you have more options and a much more instant 1,2 or 3 gear change with Campag ..... you can accidentally over change. But for average riding, the speed/flexibility of the thumb change is much better, faster and obviously has three changes, not one. Plus that speed of change enables you to change the front and rear derailleur at the same time so you don't get that slight gap that you get with Shimano where your legs over spin when you drop to the small chainring. With Campag you choose whether you want to change 0, 1 or 2 gear ratios with an instant double press on the thumb shifters ....... it is a class above any other system. Lastly hood ergonomics, Shimano is getting there, but Campag's pistol grip is way more comfortable on a long ride and the hoods have much better cushioning. My view is my Chorus is a definite upgrade to my Ultegra. EPS though! With electric, all that Campag advantage disappears and Di2 can be programmed to do anything at a fraction of the cost.
I also found all the same negatives when I tried Campi, the terrible sound, grinding of gears in an industrial way, the difficulty in getting the right gear, the stiff shifting, the disadvantages when racing... and then there are the looks... at first I thought I liked it, but I soon changed my mind after all the other problems came up. There is also the difficulty of getting parts for it, the cost and the extra tools you need... or finding a shop that speaks campi. But as someone sponsored you I understand you can't express your true feelings and have to speak in more positive terms.
"Even after an hour running around he pulls on the lead" ahahahahahaha the feels. I have that problem with my dog. But he's very strong and could pull me over quite easily. He's such a pain 😂
SRAM and Shimano are workhorse products, but Campag just looks like hipster's choice. Not convinced, but might try that L-twoo groupset which seems to be Campag ripoff at 1/10th the price.
Because Campagnolo don't specialized in mountain bike there made for road racing bike only. lot cyclist in Italy or Europe rather use road bikes. Campagnolo don't specialized in mountain bikes . If you want mountain bike go with Shimano if you want best road bike components Campagnolo is the way to go.They are little more expensive but most reliable components. Never had issues.
Great racing mate, just to let you know it's good for dogs to eat grass it's good for there digesting system, so I was told 😀, how's Jorge?? Are you still a couple?
etap! love it. insanely convenient to micro trim in case something happens during a ride. i would like my etap levers to have the hood top switch like the new shimano 9150 and 8050. very convenient for changing gears in the aero hoods position.
daAnder71 yes but Shimano has dominated the market because they are more popular, because it's better, that's why they have more money to sponsor teams. Campi is for fan boys, like iphone Vs Android, people who want to spend much more on something that isn't any better and actually slightly more difficult to live with just so they can feel superior. I should know, I was stupid enough to buy a Campi group set and an iphone once... never again!
Well, if he is drawing the dole I may suggest that he is not actively seeking employment. I believe the offence is "obtaining pecuniary advantage by deception." Love Campagnolo, never had an issue reaching the shifter when in the drops. 👍
Mark Jones I have... I know exactly what he is talking about, but maybe you have freakishly long thumbs 😂
@@reginaldscot165 I have "normal" hands. Thumb shifting is not a problem.
Having used both Shimano and Campag. Campagnolo is more intuitive to change gear.
After a severe hand injury in 2004 I went to Campy as the shift set up is better for my hand.
Campy is just superb in my opinion, notchier shifting, better looking and exquisitely crafted.

Cam! Dogs and cats naturally eat grass cos it's good for them - helps their digestive tract.
Campag is just beautiful to look at, positive gear changes , the choice most riders would make if they were not sponsored .... an Italian frame without is plane wrong ... good vid
I prefer the POP POP POP of sram. But campag is stunning
Everything related to cycling comes down to personal preference it seems.Good luck!!!
A couple more thing to add to the Campag pros are you can micro shift the front mech and it lasts for ages. I've just replaced my Campag group set after 18 years. Yeah, i use Campag record groupset throughout. Love it, used it back in the day. Back with it and for me prefer over shimano. Not used s-ram.
I think Campag is the best of the two. I have Campag record mechanical and I love it. The cassettes for record/super record are a rip off though, I use the chorus ones which are all steel rather than a mix with titanium, so they should actually last longer also.
I agree Shimano throw away components.people don't realize campagnolo are the first who invented the quick realise hubs .
Hey cam great video just to let you know grass is good for dogs it helps with there digestive system. Go figure Sam knew what he was doing.
the current super record thumb levers are slanted down so makes shifting in the drops better
I luv it when on the big ring pushing the right button for a second then the left gets you an easier gear and the other way round (harder)...it's THE coolest thing about eTap 👌

All I will say Cam is don't do a compact vs standard vs semi compact video. That'll just open a whole other can of worms haha
there are substantial metallurgical differences; Campy is superior, so much so that I use Campy chains on my Shimano DA system, as well as 1190 SRAM cassette. On the groupset thing: don’t really care. As long as it works I’m happy.
Personally I find DI2 aids climbing especially when the gradient keeps changing. DI2 is far superior to cables.

Campag vs Shimano... The comment section will be chaotic
LETS GO
+Baran The eternal question for which there can never be a winner!!!
For me, there will always be a historic romance to the Italian Campagnolo that the Japanese Shimano will never match.
For cost of campy rebuild kit I will just get entire take off shifter. Problem solved. Though, I haven’t worn out Shimano shifter yet.
If you have an itallian bike you got to have campag. Otherwise i'd stick with shimano.
agreed!
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Says the guy riding an Italian bike with a Shimano drivetrain. I always thought the rule was Italian bike/Italian wheels...Now with that rule, I am safe...got Campy wheels on my Italian bike!!
My Italian bike was made in the far east so I guess shimano is ok then!

I run campag shifters with shimano groupset, it does work but indexing has to be spot on.

SRAM and Shimano are workhorse products, but Campag just looks like hipster's choice. Not convinced, but might try that L-twoo groupset which seems to be Campag ripoff at 1/10th the price.
What is "Campag"?
Shimano. Campag has never felt good, plus they don't even make a mountain groupset like bruhhhhh

Most of the pros use shimano. The campy thumb shifter is a horrible design.
