@@Tony_Jeffries you should definitely compete, mate. I was so pleased when you mentioned controlling your breathing; I did jiu-jitsu for a bit and even though I was twenty-plus years older than ALL the other students, I quickly found they'd all tire faster than me. Why? Breathing, that's all. I had no skill but I was relaxed, cos my background was tai chi. Relaxed breathing was completely second nature to me -- even in those moments when you have very big, heavy guys on top of you, just trying to crush the air out of you.
And you have to compete in LA: someone has to represent the North East!!!

As for which better between boxing and BJJ for self defense: personally if I was absolutely positive there was only one opponent I would use my grappling. If I thought there was even a chance of someone else entering the fight I would absolutely not want to go to the ground.

@@MousyDogFace I'm 37 and been training a bit over a year. There are fellas at my gym older than both us who still compete. Some win at high levels, others compete simply because they love it, others stopped after one.
My first is in a few days. I'm nervous and, like you, unsure if I'll be able to hack it. But, as a huge plus, my BJJ has already benefitted even before I set foot in the competition. I'm training, drilling, and eating better than ever -- it has me inspired. I understand your hesitance, but I'd say it's worthwhile to sign up to compete, especially if you feel a mixture of fear and desire. As my teammates remind me, other guys there will be scared, too. One long-time wrestler told me he'd puke at every meet. Even black belts get nervous before comps!
I'm sure you'd be able to get out there and give 'em hell.

Dude. You did SO well. When I got into JiuJitsu 4 years ago, I got submitted so many times in a single round.
Then I too, quickly learned to defend my arms. But I kept losing against higher belts.
Then finally I could survive a round without getting submitted. And now I can transition from defending and surviving to hunting for my own submissions.
And with all that being said, it just gets more and more advanced.
Our gym’s JiuJitsu is like magic it’s so effective. Then Henry Akins came to our school and made our highest tankers look like children. Their concepts and hidden techniques turned us all into prey.
It just gets better and better bro. By time you are a black belt, you’ll wipe the floor with 99% of the people out there. And yet you won’t even have scratched the surface of the deepest, most advanced techniques.

I started Jiu Jitsu this month and at first it was alien to me all the moves was difficult to understand unlike when i started boxing because i watched boxing so much before i trained in it.
But now im rolling around sparring alot i love it, you can spar alot in Jiu Jitsu in boxing its more limited because more dangerous especially sparring at 100%.
The variation im picking on already from the more advanced students i love and they flow.
Only draw back for me is it starts on the ground no takedowns and fights always start on feet on street or mma, so im going to practise some wrestling as well, i used alot of greco weestling in boxing and framing so got bit of practise in stand up wrestling.

Ive personally thought about learning jujitsu too or at least try it for awhile. Jujitsu seems like a very complicated sport with lots of years it will take for someone like me to get to the point of being able to compete even at a low level.

I love this, Tony! I was introduced to boxing in 04’ and BJJ in 08’. I stopped training BJJ after 10’ to focus on my stand up to compete in amateur boxing and Muay Thai. I got back into BJJ right before covid in 18’ to receive my blue belt from my black belt professor, my friend, and we both started together as white belts competing in our first Jiu Jitsu tournament against each other, only for me to come out victorious. 😂. It’s crazy to think how far I would have come if I never stopped for that 8-year gap. But the great thing about BJJ is there isn’t really an age you can stop training, and it truly is a journey. Good luck with your journey, and I look forward to seeing your success! Oss! 🤙🏾

it's a tactical choice based on the rules present within the fight the same way striking arts have rest rounds, non grappling arts are unrealistically upright, and non-kicking arts leave their legs incredibly exposed to leg kicks, and the way arts without punches to the head like kyokushin and competitive taekwondo end up having their heads exposed. It's unrealistic but at the same time a tactical choice.
