Brent, your content is just great! And it's your honesty that makes it! You come across as a real chill dude, and it just automatically engages the viewer. Keep up the awesome work, and enjoy your new R5 mk 2! ( you deserve it )
I own a R6M2 and I love this camera. It's got all the bells and whistles I need.. And it's never let me down. I won't be buying any of the expensive cameras.
Good to hear your comments on the upgrades from the R6 to R6II. I originally had the R6, but found that the extra resolution was very helpful and worth it for what I want to shoot. Never regretted moving up to the R5. as you note, presumably the R5II should be even better than the R3 and the R6II, so FOR ME, it is a no brainer to upgrade to the R5II. Yeah the R5 is good, but if this is better and I can afford it, I am there
Love the honest rational used to make your decision and I'm really looking forward to your review and insights once you finally get it. I'm completely happy with my R6 II but I won't lie, the R5 II sounds very intriguing and who knows, never say never. I am waiting for something like the R7 II as a potential back up body. Keep the great videos coming Brent.
12:19 Here's are more features that must be used with the new P battery from B&H: "The Canon LPE6NH battery pack is compatible with the Canon EOS R5 Mark II Mirrorless camera, but there are limitations. With that battery you cannot record 8k video, network capabilities do not work, no high fps video is available, multi function shoe accessories do not work, and only slower drive speeds are available. For full compatibility the new Canon LP-E6P Lithium-Ion Battery must be used. Answered by Daniel C Staff Jul 17, 2024"
What has shocked me is that I've just realized that the Canon new battery is £119 here in the UK while Nikon Z8 and Sony batteries are around half the price. That seems like an almost hidden cost no one talks about.
The old R5 canon battery is £105 to £110 new - not that much of a difference. Look at the new grips if you want to look at raised prices for the new R5 mk2.
@@BrentHall There is one thing I’m really disappointed about unfortunately.. 4K60p is still NOT 8K oversampled! Even the old R5C had 8K oversampled 4K60p and Nikon had 8.6K oversampled 4K60p years ago BUT Canon artificially limits the R5 II and still limits oversampled 4K to 30fps (4K Fine / 4KHQ) like in the four year old R5 even though the R5C has proven that their image processor is capable of 8K oversampled 4K60p. I never thought that Canon would artificially limit the R5 II in such a disappointing way! I hope they’ll release a firmware update to the R5 II at least matching what they did with their years old R5C. The R5 II needs full sensor readout 8K oversampled 4K60p or it’ll be inferior to their old R5C and Nikon. Please give us 8K oversampled 4K60p with a firmware update Canon!!!
When on sale it will be or used. It’s a huge bummer you have to buy a $700usd fan grip in order to use the “Fan” feature on the camera. It makes the holes useless without the grip totally absurd!
It doesn’t make them useless at all… heat can still escape the body with out the fan. The fan of course if to aid to vents and drive air through them at a higher velocity, but the vents aren’t useless without with the fan.
I truly love your honesty and frankness. i saw a video earlier this year explaining about using high ISO's. Since that day i have basically forgotten worrying about high ISO's. I was considering purchasing R5 II, but after watching this video i most definitely won't be. I have a 5D mark III, R6 plus and R5. i started to sell the 5D. but for what little i was going to get i just carry it in my vehicle. I have gotten countless great photos of hawks simply because i had a good camera with me. There isn't enough great adjectives to express how i feel about the R5. Baring the fact i don't even know where the button is for doing a video it seems totally senseless to get the R5 II. Since you are buying this new camera to help keep me abreast, i am giving this video a "thanks" . i can now say i am part owner of a R5 II. (i have love my humor, even if no one else does).
Unfortuantely MII version doesn't feature IBIS High Resolution mode, so it is very limited as it doesn't use the multi-exposure IBIS function of the camera any more. Also, the former batter grip isn''t compatible with this camera (same size tough).
Yeah, let's hope they implement pre-capture much better on the R5ii. I didn't use my R7's pre-capture until recently when I needed it to catch Weaver birds arriving at their nests with grass in the beak. It worked brilliantly. I've assigned the "enable" to the front button so I can enable it quite quickly. I found I can disable it instantly if I need to by switching the mode dial to a different mode. I use presets C1, 2 & 3. So to instantly disable pre-capture just switch modes. I don't like how Canon bundles the pics into a set... that only their software can read... that I don't find intuitive and don't use. I unpack the pics I need in the camera. One by one. Why didn't Canon enable select all and unpack all to raw? Lastly there's that dreaded ... now I must wait for the freaking buffer to clear. Let's hope the new cameras are better.
Thanks for ordering it for us ... I am eagerly waiting for your review to see if I should consider upgrading my 2 R5s. AF, Improvement on Rolling Shutter, pre capture, and VIDEO CLOG 2 !!!

I am a wildlife shooter, also ordered this on pre-order and am so looking forward to this camera. My R5 has developed a fault, and I am hoping to get this camera before I do an African safari in September. For myself the main things I am looking forward to are less rolling shutter, and pre-capture, I am looking forward to faster and more accurate autofocus. Thanks for your you tube videos, I always enjoy them.
Glad to hear you praising your R6 Mark II autofocus. I'll be sticking with it and invest more resources in fast lenses. Will be interesting to see your comparison videos later.
Nice video and info. I share some common habits/thoughts. I did pre-order (+ 1 battery spare). I was waiting to get some "fresh" batteries for my R5 until I saw the specs...glad I did. For me AF improvements are number one, I shoot tiny critters and seem to always crop in some even with the new RF200-800 although less than I use too, my pack weight is a key factor so I do not care for grips and almost always hand held with wild life (not packing a heavy tripod for erratic critters), sounds like IS improvements, pre-capture should help me I hope, ...
It's fascinating to see your thoughts (and others) on this camera. I've had no delusion of ever getting it, but it's still great to see where the industry is. Besides not being financially feasible, I don't see enough of an improvement, in the features that I would use, over the R5 (do I really have to say Mark I now?). I'm still happy with the R5 and know that my better investment, if I get some money to invest, is in lenses. I am glad to see that they moved the power switch to the right hand side, but the dedicated switch between stills and video would be of no benefit to me. I would think it would be better suited to a button instead of a switch - I currently have the M-Fn button mapped for this. If you're truly switching back and forth that often, I think a physical switch would be greatly inconvenient. I'm looking forward to the videos in 3-6 months after everyone has had a chance to really use the camera. It will be interesting to see the comments then.
I think (or hope) that you’re underestimating how much you’re going to love the eye focus feature. Back in the film days I had a pair of EOS-3’s, the eye tracking was absolutely mind boggling! I can only assume that has vastly improved since then. For wildlife, it could be a game changer for you. Your reviews of the R5 are one of the reasons I have 2 of them. I am anxious to hear your review once you receive the new camera. Best wishes, and happy birthday!
Wow... your comments were "spot on" of exactly what I was thinking, both the plusses and the negatives. I currently own only one camera, the R5M1 and have used it almost daily since it came out. As mostly a wildlife/nature photographer, I love that camera and the RF lenses I own, but needed a second body. I am also starting to add more video. I purchased the R5M2 at about 3:05 AM... with a bit of a bummed feeling due to the higher cost than expected. I feel that the reviews coming out right now are based on limited usage and mostly specs. The proof will be in the performance in the "real" field. That's why I love my R5 and feel like I will be happy with the R52... only time will tell :)
Oh nice! Yeah there isn't really anyone at this point that's had much hands on experience with it, however I don't think you'll be disappointed with its performance once you get it!
There is one thing I’m really disappointed about unfortunately.. 4K60p is still NOT 8K oversampled! I also got my pre-order in for my R5 MKII . I didn’t get my order in until 0304 but I used a local store. I found out about the batteries a couple of hours later so I got an extra battery and a grip ordered from the same store at about 0500. Do o need the camera, no. Am I unhappy with my R5, not really but an improvement in AF would be welcome. I am an amateur so the question is easier, do I want it and can I afford it. The answer to both is yes. An important note about capturing photos while shooting video: video is Full HD and pictures are limited to jpeg. I am okay with that since it will still be better than shooting 4k and trying to recover an image.
Oh nice! You should definitely be in the first batch still, even if you were a full 3 mins slower! 😜🤣 That's a bummer about the video and stills thing though. I didn't know it was only FHD. Oh well, I'll still love the new camera anyway.
Why don’t you do with Jared Fro, and get a small recorder to plug into HDMI so you can actually record your screen because can allow you to do that that way you can just be taking photos and recording content for the video at the same time
Great video, as always, Brent. It looks like Canon have finally caught up with the features I have enjoyed (as have other users) for several years with Olympus OM-1. The main thing being a form of pre-capture and the stacked sensor. Why pre-capture is limited is beyond me (and yes, I appreciate it does have a 45mpx sensor which is double the data than the OM-1). One reviewer describes the feature as 'revolutionary', well, sorry it has been around on m43rds bodies for at least the last 5-10 years. Pre-capture is essential for any wildlife work, imho. The other major benefit is the new stacked sensor, For wildlife when panning this is beyond essential. As I like to say, "once you go stacked, you never go back..." Enjoy the new camera when you get it!
Hi, Regarding the grip, on the R5 I got the grip and can’t use it as it makes the R5 crash for a reason that no one can explian including Vanon. Very frustrating knowing it cost me 410€.
I'm on the west coast like you and also set my alarm for 3:00am to get up and watch the announcement and get my pre-order in as soon as possible... I wanted a second body for an upcoming trip, so I actually placed my order as soon as they went live on B&H and then spent the day watching the reviews of the camera on TH-cam. After a little bit of soul searching, I decided that the new features for me, weren't worth the price and that it made more sense for me to get a second R5 (which were on sale on B&H at the time for $1400 less than the Mark II). I felt it made more sense to have a 2nd body with all the same buttons and menus, than a brand new flashy camera which might have me fiddling around with the bodies when I jumped between them in the field. Sometimes you have to love the one you're with, even if the new one is pretty. Plus the money I saved paid for my flight. :)
Pre- capture is 0.5 seconds (15 frames) in raw. Take stills only on 1080p video. I wish 4k. I also use M fn button to switch to video on my R5. No 30 minutes recording limit. I pre-ordered one at 3:15 am 7/17. I bought it for reduced rolling shutter, better AF and pre-capture in Raw and no need to use Canon DPP to get those pics. It has an additional accelerator chip in it. The new R1 and R5 II should have the best AF in Canon lineup
Hi Brent thanks for the review, what stood out the most for me was what you said about the R6 mark ii, with the R5 dropping in price do you think the R5 is better than R6 mark ii? Is it worth the extra money for the R5 or do you actually prefer the mark ii over the R5?
It really depends on your needs and shooting style. I've made a few videos about that. I think I did one this year about if the R5 was any good in 2024, and I'm pretty sure I talked about it vs the R6II also.
I have the r6 mark II and im very happy with it. The only thing is that 24mp are just not enouth for me cause most of time i need to crop my images. Wondering if the r5 mark1 would be the best decicion ? Or maybe i would miss my r6II with all his great features.
That's tough. I've made a few videos about that. I think it will depend on how you use the camera. The 45mp of the R% is seriously seductive to most, and rightly so. While the R6II's AF is superior, the R%'s isn't bad, it's just not quite as good. So if you find yourself wanting more mps, croppability, and slightly higher IQ, plus features like 8K video and digital mode dial, then the R5 might be your jam. However, if you think you'll miss the superior AF, slightly better high iso performance, and no video record limits, then you might be happier with the R6II for now.
I currently have the R5 and a R7. Knowing the R5 MII was on its way I have already thought about if it would be worth the upgrade. For me, no, not upgrading as the R5 is a very good camera and I am happy with it. I do hope some features roll down hill in firm ware when they can but not upgrading. I have had an expensive few months already picking up the 200-800, 10-20 and 50 F1.2. I think I need to put some money in the bank for a bit. If anything, The R7 is not what I hoped for and wish it had better buffering for wildlife. A R7 MII is something that I would consider upgrading too and hope Cannon is thinking about it. Those jumping into Canon, save some coin for glass and pick up a used R5 as they will soon be on the market at a bargain price.
Well you can never go wrong with investing in better glass! And yeah, good lenses paired with the OG R5 is still a really great way to go for anyone. I would also look forward to an R7II with some major fixes.
If I was shopping for Canon FF, I'd almost certainly look at the R6mk2. I've used an R6 and an R5 and while the extra pixels are cool, I didn't find them to game changing, and I wouldn't use the additional video specs. That said, I am too lazy to carry around BIG lenses, so I'm sticking with micro 4/3 for now.
Jeez, I didn't pre-order the R5II until around 8:15am, now I'm worried! :) I'm primarily a stills shooter, but I found it an easy decision to pull the trigger--though I will admit I've been waiting excitedly for the R5II for what feels like forever! The main factors for me are the improved AF (as you said, the R5 certainly isn't BAD, but I've still envied what I've seen from the R6II) and the improved sensor (14-bit in electronic shutter, yay!). The larger EVF was a surprise, and that excites me too--nothing wrong with the R5's EVF, but my eyes aren't getting any younger so I figure bigger will be better. Pre-capture I'm interested in (though I hope for a firmware update to make it more flexible), and eye-control AF I want to try. I also presume it removes the R5's other electronic shutter quirks (no bracketing, 0.5sec maximum exposure), which will be nice. And the rest, like improved video specs, are great but don't make a huge difference for me. I certainly wish it was a bit less expensive, but that part wasn't really a surprise. Anybody wanna buy a used R5 in excellent condition? :)
Oh man, I totally forgot abut the R5's stupid 0.5 sec shutter issue! I really hope they fixed that too because that drives me crazy, lol. Also, I don't think you'll have too hard of a time offloading your R5. I think they'll continue to be popular for a while still.
@@BrentHall The R7 has neither of those limitations with its electronic shutter, and I imagine the R6II doesn't either? Should definitely be things of the past in the R5II as well.
I had hoped it would be a replacement to the R5 like the R6 II was when it comes to the price. The R6 II kept the same price as the original and can now be had new for even less. Pretty much the best camera at that price. The R5 II already has more competition from Nikon and sony cameras so it would have made sense to keep the price.
@BrentHall I am still struggling to decide if I should let go of my R6 Mk Ii for R5 ii or just get bigger better lenses for the reach. For bird photography R6 ii does have a reach issue as I only have RF 100-400 for now. Looking forward to your take on R5 ii AF to see if it's worth it.
Oh that's tough, especially if you only have the 1-4. I mean, it's a solid little lens, but you could get a lot better lenses for the money of a new R5II. I only paid $4K for my 500 f4 mk ii. I say only, but you know that's a relative term, compared to other big white primes, you know.
Traded in my r5, Canon paid the tax so between what I paid originally and my out of pocket I paid about msrp. The mkii seems to have better af than the R6 mkii and the mp of the R5. Always had slight regret upgrading to the R5 from the R6 mkii because the AF while good, it was noticeably better on the R6.
Oh nice! Yeah, I never thought the R5's AF was bad, but it was definitely noticeably worse than the R6II's, for sure! It's always been just a little hard to go back to the R5 after using the R6II, at least for the AF.
Personally, i'm very happy with my R6II. The R5II sounds amazing but i'm just not in the target audience. For me, (too) high MPs is more of a drawback than a benefit, i dont need the video features and overall the R6II even has a few benefits like battery consumption. And even if i want to get more reach out of the 200-800, i'd actually rather get the R50. That still keeps me at a satisfying 6000x4000 resolution, gives me some benefits of having a 2nd body (granted, with some drawbacks such as less dials etc., but at the same time it's compact and very lightweigth next to my R6II with a cage and arca plate). And overall i'd say it's a bettter choice than getting a 2x TC, while still being at a similar price point.
I pretty much agree with your thought. Fortunately I have the extra money to spend. As far as the still/video switch is concerned it has no value to me. I programmed the Fn to switch among the c1,c2,c3 still modes. If I need quick video the red button on the top records c3 video while shooting stills. Otherwise I can switch to video on the top or now the left side. Shooting still while doing video is nice. Sad that you need the new batteries with the extra power for the newest features. Not really that surprising. I hope battery life is better in general.
Oh nice. Hopefully canon doesn't get too slammed with the pre-orders and we get them in a timely fashion, lol. Yeah the battery thing caught me a bit off guard but I wasn't that surprised either. Overall though, I'm definitely looking forward to it!
Put a comment on here yesterday that the R5 mk II has cross focus points. This was a mistake by the site I referenced. It doesn’t have cross focus points.
I own an R5. As a hobbyist and not that much into video, I cannot not justify the cost for the incremental improvements in the new camera. I realize that for professionals with TH-cam channels, etc. the decision may be completely the opposite. Despite those preferring hybrid cameras, I do believe there's a market for a very high resolution, high dynamic range, and good autofocus photocentric camera. Unfortunately it may never come from Canon. Nikon perhaps?
I'm buying the R5 II for much the same reasons: AF, stacked sensor, slo-mo with sound, etc. -- plus value for my channel. If it weren't for TH-cam, maybe I wouldn't do it as my R5 is actually good enough.
Having not only the Sony Alpha 7R III but very recently bought an A7RV for a price where I couldn't say no I am now firmly planted in the Sony world. But I have to say that the Canon R5 II sounds really exciting. No, I will not switch because then I would have to live in cardboxes for the rest of my life. Nevertheless it doesn't hurt to take a look over the fence every once in a while.
Hey brent. In an unrelated matter I couldn't help but notice the 500 f4 behind ya. Are you happy with it? I'm asking cause I was thinking for my 60th birthday either getting that or 600 f4 of course used. No hurry on getting back to me. I'm shooting r6 mk.2. Thanks Brent ☺️
I am very happy with it! I've made a few videos about it and I how much I still love it (check out some recent videos in my wildlife photography playlist). I do think I would enjoy the reach of a 600, but unless I could get the RF 600 then I prefer this over any of the other 600s, because it's lighter, just as sharp and fast, and small enough to still easily fit in my bag for international flying (I made a couple videos about that recently, too). Plus it's cheaper, lol. But a couple of clients of mine on some workshops recently have had the RF 600 and let me use it, and boy do I like that thing! If it wasn't so expensive I'd definitely consider it over my 500. The downside still being that while the RF 600 is lighter, and roughly the same weight as the 500, it has a much bigger front element and lens hood, which won't fit into very many carry-on bags, but I could always just get a travel lens hood for it and make it work. Not that big of a deal I guess.
@BrentHall absolutely wish I could afford the rf 600mm f4. But seeing how I do not play the lottery I will go for the 500mm. I will check some of your videos. And thanks so much Brent.
I’m hoping the R5 mk1 will come down in price and maybe I’ll be able to upgrade from my R6 mk1. But the R6mk2 does look awesome. Just can’t afford the R5mk2. Looking forward to your videos about it though!
I think you'll be disappointed of the photo-while-filming feature. You have to record at 1080, and even then it makes a 27MP photo with the same shutter speed as the video ans at a 16:9 ratio. It's probably still useable in some circumstances, but at that point you're probably better off to record in 8K and extract a single frame (since 8K is roughly 32MP and shutter speed and ratio are the same anyways). I dont know iif the R5II can shoot 6k, but even then extracting a picture would yield almost the same results. I just don't really see a huge benefit with that implementation.
Thanks for the intro on the R5II here in Australia it Starting price body only from Canon Australia $6699 and from the camera stores it $6499 body only and there saying shipping late August i'd say late september early october
100%. I was excited and would probably get one at $3999 but $4300 is a no. As a photographer it offers very little that will make me better images. Canon dropped the ball
Thank you so much for not trying "to sell" the new camera, unlike bigger channels / yourubers - where they are complementing a lot and criticizing a little, making sure that they don't say too much, so they keep good relationship with the brands, their legit sponsors. I think R5 mk2 had more hype & mystery all of those years, but it doesn't feel like it's a game changer for the industry. Haha, and not a lot of people care about R1 😅😂 Thanks!
You bet man, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I definitely don't have any sponsors or brands to please for this, though I certainly wouldn't mind if anyone wants to use my affiliate links! 😁😜 Yeah, I agree, it's definitely not a game-changer, but I'm personally looking forward to the upgrade.
Hobby photographer here - I've been tempted by the R5 and the R6mkII in the back of my head for a while now to replace (or take the primary spot of) my R7 for a while now... The news and all the initial impressions I've been watching about the R5mkII today have not helped my temptation levels at all LOL
Idk. Print quality depends on so much more than just mps. If you have a good shot from any camera, good processing, and good printer, then you really can't go wrong no matter what camera shot it.
@BrentHall that's my thery. So why are so many youtubers pushing new cameras? by using an atomos monitor one can watch live output to monitor and make settings on camera. when it looks right take the photo. Works on any camera with live output. i cheat, i send my output to my s9 tablet. i change settings till it looks good on screen. then I ake the shot. 7Dmk2 and 5DMK4. hardly and post work needed.
Yeah, according to a lot of people that's the word on the street. Personally, I couldn't care less. In my own images so far, while true, it's been quite marginal and not enough for me to really notice or care. Especially given how happy I am with all of the other upgraded and new features. That's just me though. I've been very happy with the images I'm getting with it, even at very high isos.
Oh that's awesome! Have fun out there and tag me on IG if you get anything cool! Also, we'd love to have you next year. There's 2 spots still open for next May.
Nobody likes a price increase but l do feel there are enough upgrades for Canon to get away with it. I feel the only reason to upgrade from original R5 is for speed.
Yeah, I'm not personally too upset about the price increase. With inflation I think it's reasonably expected. I just mentioned it because a lot of other people have mentioned it was an issue for them. Also for me, the AF alone is worth the upgrade and everything else is just cherries on top.
oh idk. I've heard a lot of great things about the Z8, but I don't really know anything about it specifically so I couldn't say how it compares. Either way I don't think you could wrong with any of these new cameras these days.
Pricing comments are not rational. How much was the R5 a year ago. The price of the R5 ONLY decreased because the R5II. Its almost 5 years old. a $300 increase after almost 5 years is not absurd. Yes of course as consumers we all want more for less, but it is not a huge increase for an uprgade and is a bit nitpicky. Anyone that was going to buy at 3999 can afford 4299, and the batteries are like $70. Seems a little nitpicky. How many memory cards do photgraphers buy, etc., so an extra couple of newer, better batteries is such a small matter There is a big difference between saying R6II is the best overall VALUE vs best overall CAMERA.
As a nature photographer the one major upgrade for me is the stacked sensor which allows for high fps silent shooting at a slightly more reasonable price (bonus is the pre-continuous shooting as Canon refers to it). I have been waiting for either Canon or Sony to come out with one on this tier since the Z8 came out. I sold my R5 a few months ago, but for me that was not a great camera as it tended to crash at just that point in time that I was about to get the action shot so I have been using the Sony A7RV which was basically on par with the R5 but was extremely stable and reliable. I will wait to see if the R5II is more stable before giving that one a shot which means that my big white canon lens will stay in the closet a while longer. That is unless Sony comes out with an equivalent at a similar price but at the moment that would really be fairly close to the A1 which is out of reach financially.
The R5 Mii to me is compelling because I heard from Petapixel that the precapture uses raw instead of a container file that can't be extracted in Photoshop/lightroom. Additionally the 45 MP stacked is great. But at the end of they day I see the price and it just doesn't make sense not when you can get a used R5 Mi for almost have the price. Also many of the updates seem to be software (which in theory can just be an update on older bodies) or video related which I don't really use. To me it feels really similar to the Z8 except the defining feature that made the Z8 atractive was it's low price tag which this camera lacks. As for the R1 (really should just be called the R3 Mii) I feel like you only get it if you are the target buyer for the R3 but never got one when it came out. In this way both releases have been pretty underwhelming.
pre order are always a bit risky. When the R5 was out it had bunch of issues especially on overheating. Most issues were partly fixed by firmware over time. I'm going to wait and see
I am currently without a camera and am starting over, again. I traded the OM1 for aZ8. The Z8 was not an inspiring camera and there were several things I didn't like about it. I am thinking about buying an R5 or maybe an R6ii, but I have to sort out what lenses to get. Trying to keep the whole kit lightweight. I love photography, but finding a camera that I really love has been hard. The perfect camera would be an OM1 with all of its functionality that has full-frame image quality. I can't continue to bounce around. Edit: I bought an R5 and two lenses, 14-35 & 70-200 f/4. We shall see how this works out.
@@alphaandomega2709Sony absolutely does not have the best autofocus and lens selection doesn’t matter when most of them are just inferior to the first party lenses and you can’t use high fps modes at all😂
@@BrentHall I’m a hobbyist that right now does landscape and wave photography. I know both would be amazing at that. I also like night Astro shooting and the Z8’s features (backlit buttons/night mode) are great. I like the Z8’s flip screen for low angle/vertical shots etc and their lens options are really great. However I have a common t7i (crop dslr) so the R5 and I’m sure R5ii just feels better, more comfortable to hold and I think their user interface is better along with their fantastic AF for when I want to shoot other areas (birds/planes/people). I want a buy once cry once camera I can grow into for many years and torn because I know I’ll be locking into their system 🤷🏻♂️
Living on a small pension, R5 mark II is out of my reach. Period. A used R5 mark I will cost half the price, so for me that is a more affordable option.
Brent, your content is just great! And it's your honesty that makes it! You come across as a real chill dude, and it just automatically engages the viewer. Keep up the awesome work, and enjoy your new R5 mk 2! ( you deserve it )
Brent, love your channel and your honesty. I doubt I will upgrade due to cost, but I’m really looking forward to your reviews on this new camera.
I own a R6M2 and I love this camera. It's got all the bells and whistles I need.. And it's never let me down. I won't be buying any of the expensive cameras.
I still love my R6II as well! Such a solid camera.
Does your R6ii overheat in 4k60?
Good to hear your comments on the upgrades from the R6 to R6II. I originally had the R6, but found that the extra resolution was very helpful and worth it for what I want to shoot. Never regretted moving up to the R5. as you note, presumably the R5II should be even better than the R3 and the R6II, so FOR ME, it is a no brainer to upgrade to the R5II. Yeah the R5 is good, but if this is better and I can afford it, I am there
Ive upgraded from R6- R6II. For me 3 reasons no record limit . big af box for f11 lenses. orginal battery grip fits the mk2 camera.
My thoughts exactly
Hey thanks, I appreciate that and I'm glad you liked the video! Yeah, I'd definitely be interested to see what an R7II would look like as well.
12:19 Here's are more features that must be used with the new P battery from B&H:
"The Canon LPE6NH battery pack is compatible with the Canon EOS R5 Mark II Mirrorless camera, but there are limitations. With that battery you cannot record 8k video, network capabilities do not work, no high fps video is available, multi function shoe accessories do not work, and only slower drive speeds are available. For full compatibility the new Canon LP-E6P Lithium-Ion Battery must be used.

What has shocked me is that I've just realized that the Canon new battery is £119 here in the UK while Nikon Z8 and Sony batteries are around half the price. That seems like an almost hidden cost no one talks about.
Oh man, that's WAY more. They're $80 here in the US and I thought that was bad! 😱😭
Its not US$700
I truly love your honesty and frankness. i saw a video earlier this year explaining about using high ISO's.
Thanks man! Yeah, the R5 is definitely still a great camera.
I upgraded from my R5 two yrs ago.... to the R7 :) lol Great choice. Never looked back :) They sure do need to hurry up with the R7 Mk II though !
I would definitely be interested in seeing what an R7II would look like!
Unfortuantely MII version doesn't feature IBIS High Resolution mode, so it is very limited as it doesn't use the multi-exposure IBIS function of the camera any more. Also, the former batter grip isn''t compatible with this camera (same size tough).
I'm ordering the mark 2 and selling my R3. Not sure if i will regret it but the extra MP and new AF module is enough for me, plus pre-capture.
I'm definitely looking forward to it!

Oh nice! Well I hope it it comes in before your trip. I'm definitely envious. That would be an awesome place to break in the new gear.
Glad to hear you praising your R6 Mark II autofocus.
I'll be sticking with it and invest more resources in fast lenses.
Will be interesting to see your comparison videos later.
You can never go wrong with investing in more fast lenses!
Thanks, I appreciate that! Yeah, the AF alone will be worth it for, personally. Everything else will be just be icing on the cake.
You can never go wrong with more lenses! And the OG R5 is still an incredible camera, for sure.
Yeah, I might! I'll definitely give it a go and see how does for me. Overall, I'm still super excited about the upgrade.
Wow... your comments were "spot on" of exactly what I was thinking, both the plusses and the negatives.

Yeah, I really liked the stacked sensor and procapture in the OM1 mk II! I'm definitely looking forward to this one as upgrade to my R5.
Hi,
Regarding the grip, on the R5 I got the grip and can’t use it as it makes the R5 crash for a reason that no one can explian including Vanon.
Oh nice! Yeah, that's super practical, and like I said in the video, the OG R5 s still a seriously great camera.
Oh nice! Well I'm definitely looking forward to he upgrade!
@@BrentHall Ok thanks Brent I will go through some of your older videos
And I’m keeping my RX as well as for a back up.
I'm primarily a stills shooter, but I found it an easy decision to pull the trigger--though I will admit I've been waiting excitedly for the R5II for what feels like forever!
Great video and channel
Thanks for making content
Hey thanks man, I really appreciate that!
I did the same thing, got up 1/2 hour before the event started it and ordered it two minutes later!
YAS! 🙌😁
I believe on the B and H review they said in video mode you can't shoot raw without the new battery.
oh wow. Interesting.
I'm buying the R5 II for much the same reasons: AF, stacked sensor, slo-mo with sound, etc. -- plus value for my channel. If it weren't for TH-cam, maybe I wouldn't do it as my R5 is actually good enough.
Oh nice! I know you'll love it for what you do.
Thanks for your thoughts. I love my R6mii and my R5, I don’t think the upgrade is worth it to me.
TH-cam, the new home shopping channel.
I’m hoping the R5 mk1 will come down in price and maybe I’ll be able to upgrade from my R6 mk1. But the R6mk2 does look awesome. Just can’t afford the R5mk2. Looking forward to your videos about it though!
Both the R5 and/or the R6II would be a very solid upgrade choice from an R6! You'd just need to decide if you want more mps or better AF.
Yeah, I didn't find that out until after I put the video out, lol. Oh well. Overall, I'll still be super happy with the upgrade!
I’m happy you are upgrading to the r5m2. Maybe I will come out for a workshop.
Yeah, I'm definitely excited for it! Email me anytime if you have any questions about workshops or private workshops!
Thanks for the intro on the R5II here in Australia it Starting price body only from Canon Australia $6699 and from the camera stores it $6499 body only and there saying shipping late August i'd say late september early october
oh man that's crazy!!! 🤯😱😱
Thanks!
Finely a R6mk II with 45 mp and precapture 😄I´am going to buy it.
The R5 is more than good enough for 95 percent of photographers.
100%. I was excited and would probably get one at $3999 but $4300 is a no. As a photographer it offers very little that will make me better images. Canon dropped the ball
It really is still a great camera!
Some people are selling them for $1800 on ebay rn, amazing deal!
Haha, and not a lot of people care about R1 😅😂
Thanks!
You bet man, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I definitely don't have any sponsors or brands to please for this, though I certainly wouldn't mind if anyone wants to use my affiliate links! 😁😜
Yeah, I agree, it's definitely not a game-changer, but I'm personally looking forward to the upgrade.
I heard that too about the battery and the pre-capture, probably more features too. Canon basically forcing us to buy the new P batteries.
Yeah, and they're $80 !!!! 😱🫠😭
Good discussion of important decision points.
there is no video record limit on the mark 2
🫡🙌🤗🤩😀
I preordered yesterday morning shortly after it was released. I have the R6 Mark II and 5D Mark IV. I am selling my 5D to go towards this
Oh nice, that'll be such a perfect combo!
FYI the shooting stills in video mode is only available in 1080p and JPEG only - so no 4k/8k or RAW
Oh, bummer!
@@BrentHall sorry for the bad news!
@Mr.Zen_73 lol, no worries. I wasn't expecting much. Overall I'm still quite excited about it as an upgrade to my R5.
@@BrentHall yep agreed. it's $6500 in Australia going to wait a while until the price drops a bit
Hobby photographer here - I've been tempted by the R5 and the R6mkII in the back of my head for a while now to replace (or take the primary spot of) my R7 for a while now... The news and all the initial impressions I've been watching about the R5mkII today have not helped my temptation levels at all LOL
It is most definitely tempting! 😈📷
I’m also an r7 shooter. What did you do? Order a new camera or what? Thoughts?
How much better will a print be over say a 1DS or D5?
Nice video bro! I will gladly continue using my R7. 🙂
The price increase could be for the Clog 2 ?
And also the plethora of other features…
I ordered it for all the same reasons. Great video bro
YAS! 😀😁
acording to duade the r5II at high iso is worse than the orginal R5
Yeah, according to a lot of people that's the word on the street. Personally, I couldn't care less. In my own images so far, while true, it's been quite marginal and not enough for me to really notice or care. Especially given how happy I am with all of the other upgraded and new features. That's just me though. I've been very happy with the images I'm getting with it, even at very high isos.
Me? I would miss the upper body workout that Nikons provide. 😊
Hi Brent like the video well us in the UK have to stump up $5,861 for the R5 markii so I have one on order🙂
Oh dayum! That hurts, lol. But that's awesome that you got one on pre-order!
Looking at your workshops am of out to Troup Head tomorrow (Gannets) may see you in 2025. Will use the R5 and 500mm f4 ii.
As I understand it, Canon has not caught up with the Nikon Z8 in terms of characteristics?
How many memory cards do photgraphers buy, etc., so an extra couple of newer, better batteries is such a small matter
There is a big difference between saying R6II is the best overall VALUE vs best overall CAMERA.
" it tended to crash at just that point in time that I was about to get the action shot"??????????????
I'm going to wait and see
Yo
Only one self can answer if it's worth it.
Is canon R5 is still worthy to buy in 2024..? Please reply
Yes it is.
What the BIG DEAL??
All camera that cost 6000 dollars can do what R5 II or R1 can do. And the rest just make up story!!!
Sony!! Small compact best autofocus, dynamic range, best lens selection.
@@alphaandomega2709Sony absolutely does not have the best autofocus and lens selection doesn’t matter when most of them are just inferior to the first party lenses and you can’t use high fps modes at all😂
What things did you not like about the Z8, I’m debating between the z8 and R5ii
What do you need for a camera to inspire you ? Making photographic art can be done on any camera even a 50 year old film camera
@@michaelmalodrums9674 I need the camera to get out of the way. Z8 was super futzzy.
I can’t decide between the R5ii or Z8, R5 body (similar to R5ii) feels great in the hands, Nikon has better lens options
That's a tough choice. I've heard really good things about that Z8, and the OG R5 price dropping will be seriously nice.
No, too much!!!!
Not worth the wait. The original R5 was ahead of its time. This new R5 looks lame versus the Z9 or even versus the Z8
Living on a small pension, R5 mark II is out of my reach. Period. A used R5 mark I will cost half the price, so for me that is a more affordable option.
Well the OG R5 will definitely be a great value now! IT's still such a solid camera.
@@BrentHall Hey! Yes I know, and waiting a few weeks or months the R5 will cost half of the new R% mark II. NEW!
