I just watched this interview,coming from a Marine Corps family even though he is no longer in the Corps ,it broke my heart ,thank god he’s back home ,it will take a lot of therapy for him to recover from this ,but he seems like a strong man ,well of course he is ,once a Marine always a Marine .
He went out to a bar and got into an argument with the locals that same argument turned into a scuffle. Grateful he made it out, it’s a testament to him that he survived. This is a true miracle , GOD bless his family,and he is a real man, Marine, and hero of his own making.
As a kid, my mom abused me and, the way things were going, I had accepted that she'd kill me before I reached 18. Hope was a foreign concept. When she got sick and became an invalid when I was 16, that was when I first thought that I could live. I get where he's coming from. Hope is a weakness in those situations because people can dangle promises in front of you and then snatch them away. Hope is torture when you're trapped. Better to just concentrate on surviving one day at a time instead.
I'm real sorry you had to grow up under that. I'm glad you are a survivor and I hope you have adapted normally. I had a step mother enter my life at age 12 who beat me at the torture level. She was 15 years younger than my dad and she convinced him that I was a liar. It was a gift to be sent to a boarding school (chartwell manor in mendham NJ) where I found that gift had turned to a curse with horrible sexual abuse. My mom died when I was age 11and after that my life was torture until I joined the army at age 17. It's amazing what humans can endure but it's cost me much and prevented me from normal life. I've been through addiction and divorce and more pain than a person should know. Through it all I have not become an abuser of any sort, I care for stray animals and try to help where I am able. Suffering is not fun and those that cause it are barely human.
I don't know why but your comment hit me like a brick. I guess other kids (all of us at Chartwell manor) have suffered much the same. The suicide rate of my fellow students there is much higher than national average and addiction was pretty common. May I ask where and when of your story? I'm glad that the world takes abuse of children seriously now. I was crying out to everyone and even escaped that school and went to the police who returned me to that place and we're convinced by the principle (and my abuser) that I was merely a troubled kid and a liar. Sometimes I would cry myself to sleep thinking about life before my mom died and I missed her so much I thought I would die from sorrow if not abuse. The man (Terrence Lynch) who owned the school ended up going to prison and then re-offended upon release. Life sure is unfair, I am broke, renting and my health is failing and the only joy I have is helping animals through their suffering and fears. I wish I had more money to pay for veterinary services and maybe make sure these animals are cared for better and when I die.
This is the reason why you should never go to Russia, China, or N. Korea especially if you have a military background. They will wrongly charge and detain you to force a prisoner exchange.

That resonated with me too. Obviously his situation was extreme but being afraid to hope or to dream for better because so much has already been stripped from you is so poignant and regrettably relatable.
My youngest son tattooed his finger and told me on the phone. Man was I up set Im 70 and grew up in the .old school. He said he was thinking of his brother who was in Afghanistan as a ranger airborne when he did it. I asked him what he put on his hands so he says he wrote "NO HOPE". MAN WAS I pissed. Knew we almost lost him there after 18 months straight in combat. He really looks up to his older brother. So I became a different person when he showed me his hands for they said "KNOW HOPE" . Said never give up hope and faith that he would see his brother again and he did. Made me really stop jumping to conclusions that I know everything for I truly don't. I thank the Lord for my children he's been good to mom and me. I keep the faith that one day we'll all be together again as mom passed away 3 and a half years ago. She did see her oldest come back from Afghanistan a beautiful man. Wish I'd of had my complete family longer but it is what it is. Knowing I'm luckier than many so love your family members as best you can time is what can never be returned but love surely can and does.
Everyone who's been to prison knows what exactly he's talking about I just wouldn't want to end up in that prison in Russia being an American one with a military record we're happy you made it

Im really thrilled Trevor is back safe amongst his family......his personal resilience and mindset has prevented him from being torn apart mentally from the ordeal.....the Russians would have placed him amongst the mentally dangerous personas in that cell to ultimately challenge his own sanity...(to try and break his mind and soul so he might come out a hopeless broken individual), I would say that was there goal, the un-predictability of their behaviour is the most frightening thing....it would have kept him on guard psychologically and without rest .....that fear that if you let you guard down (say for example to fall asleep in a corner of the room ) he may have been stabbed/mauled/attacked etc........Im proud of you Trevor...and your mindset+resilience...you kept yourself alive in the darkest starkest hours.....and now you also can bring truth and strength to the rest of us as to what really goes on in the inside corruption of the Russian ways. You are now a man who was on the inside....and spreading the truth to the world. May god be with you and your family. We are proud of you , and your resilience...you beat them in the long game....stay safe....keep yourself surrounded by those you love and love you....allow time to heal....and ultimately peace. I'm pretty sure lots of guys who've spent 3 years in an American jail and prison system can tell similar stories. I had a client being detained in Metropolitan State Mental hospital calling me on the phone saying "They're torturing me with sleep deprivation."
It is true that many American prisons are just as bad as those in Russia, so why are they trying to parade this dude around on news stations for his prison experiences as if he is some kind of special case when he was just a prisoner who was treated same as any other prisoner in jail. I guess that he thought that he was suppose to be given a private cell with a King Size bed with extra space, HD TV, and free WIFI with gourmet snacks between regular meals, and allowed to telephone home on a regular basis 😊 Jails are not meant to be comfortable, because if they were, then people would commit more crimes so that they could go there to relax 😊.
No, they can't tell similar stories, because russian prisons or workcamps are something unique. Trevor said one thing : toilet is just a hole in the ground. It's not even about prisons in russia - 20% of russians are used to live like that. This is considered normal in russia. 30% of school toilets are not inside of school, they are not heated. I’m glad Trevor Reed is out & safe!, however, We have our own horror shows here In The US prison systems, incl. chronically abusive guards, the cruel punishment of years of solitary confinement, and the imprisonment of people for decades for non-violent crimes, like having weed/pot on themselves. Our unjust prison system, bc it’s all about affording the best lawyers, costs the taxpayers a minimum of about $45,000.00 per year per prisoner, and all for pot? Or three strikes & your out laws, and that can be stealing bikes!!!
What about the sheer numbers of American entrapped in the legal system in the form of actual imprisonment, probation, or parole, or permanent criminal record? The numbers are in the millions.
U.S. prisons may be violent, but nothing compared to overseas prisons. I worked in Bangkok and had to drive past what is considered the most violent prison in the world. Just being near the place gave me the creeps. I saw a special documentary on Russian prisons and while health conditions are basically clean, the treatment is rough and the prisoners are treated like dogs. I guess the phrase “ Can’t do the time, don’t do the crime” really applies outside the U.S.

That's kinda the whole point. Prisons are supposed to be bad enough that it scars people for life. It's an excellent motivator for foreign offenders to start respecting the laws of the country they're visiting. If he learned his lesson he will never get over it :)

I used to be criminal attorney in Russia 20+ years ago. To see our clients, we had to go to jail in special room, what was pretty much like cell. One of my client was placed in psychiatric facility for treatment. Few months later, I literally couldn't recognize him - they made him psychic out of normal human beings. This guy thanks God looks normal, but I only can imagine how much they broke him down. Unbelievable cruelty I could tell so much about it....it's not funny
Given your experience, what would be the rationale of his Russian girlfriend, a recent law school graduate, after Trevor getting really drunk at a party, and having friends try to drive him home so he could safely sleep it off, when he got out of the car at a stop light and they couldn't get him back in, she called the police. I would guess that she thought that was a better idea than having him wandering the streets drunk and possibly getting into bad trouble. But it goes against my understanding that most young people in Russia avoid contact with police and the court system at all costs, because you never know what is going to happen, especially when her boyfriend is an American who speaks Russian poorly, and is an ex-Marine. What I would like to know is in Russia, do the Russian police have some special abilities to deal with drunk people safely, or do some Russian citizens think this?
Speaking about prisons or jails, it is always a hellish place most of the time. Sometimes a prison is a place where it makes you appreciate and gives meaning what the other side is like. When you encounter someone whose mindset is healthy and is free of what we heard being said here then it can become something different depending who is with you. The majority of times though any prison or jail is HELL. Even in the US many prisons could look clean in the outside and that helps a lot, but mentally is pure hell on Earth. No one needs to die to know what hell is, right here it is created by people's mindset.

My adopted father died a brig general in the national guard after doing 39 active years in army air corps and colonel in WW2. Asked him dad why don't you drink or smoke? Simple Ive got better things to do with my time and money. Smartest man I ever met and kindest.man too

Addiction is comparable... thats the worst part about it when you note it's a prison but of your own making to some degree. The feeling you can't win, you'll never escape it because you're too weak. American jails they put them in ice-cold rooms, dark rooms, rooms with no windows, some prisoners even stay remain in isolation for 20yrs with no social interaction. @@yelenas2130 I have no idea how the care in psych wards in the US is. I live in the Netherlands and healthcare in general, including psychiatric care, is excellent here. Insurance for medical is mandatory so everyone is “covered” for medical care. It saddens me that so many countries lack even the basic care; safety, a good place to sleep and healthy food.
OK? Trevor Reed got in trouble twice in Russia that we know of. And both times involved alcohol, drunkenness, public intoxication, acting out and the accusation of some violence? His girlfriend handed him over to the police with the intention that he would go to a drunk tank and detox. She couldn't handle him. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. Other countries have other laws. If you are in a foreign country, you could live more accountable. I've met a few Americans in other countries that claim innocence when the get busted fooling around. When I am abroad, I am careful about drinking, about who I am with, about who has access to my housing, my bags, my belongings. In fact, that is my philosophy here at home in the US. For me, alcohol and crowds don't mix well. Even if I behave, I might bump into a belligerent drunk that needs to go to a drunk tank.
I read that his 2020 "violence" was grabbing the steering wheel while in the police car and trying to drive it off the road. (His girlfriend says she followed the police car and it did not swerve.) But I would guess it was not easy getting him in the car either. I agree that his girlfriend must have been at the end of her rope with him, more than him just not wanting to get back in the car, when she and her friends were just trying to get him home safely. "I was too drunk to remember anything," is not a good defense. I'm an American and worked in Brazil during the late 1970s when it was a military dictatorship, and I agree with you 100% about the need to be careful never to violate laws. Same when I lived in Europe. When I was in college, and drinking as minimally as I do now, I had a good friend who was a kind, fun person, who turned mean when drinking. If that could happen to him, what can alcohol do to some aggressive, really disturbed people who are that way without drinking?
I was in Russia 8 years, never once went to jail. You have to really ef up to get yourself busted. Of course I don't drink, use drugs, etc. I was in their home, their country, and never disrespected their way of life. I am a person of color (Lakota) and wasn't out acting tough, etc.

I had a feeling there's a lot more under the surface to his arrest than what was shared with the public. Being a former marine, he could've been in Russia for work-related stuff that got him into trouble. In any case, being locked up in any country as a foreigner with no in-prison support is 10 times worse. You stick out like a whale in a school dolphins. Also, prison is prison, No matter where you are in the world, it'll be hell in there not holiday.

Of all human emotion, hope is most awful.... Hope fulfilled is relief. Hope denied is devastating. When you choke down the scale and range of human emotions and feeling, you begin to feel the fabric of yourself fray and unravel. Myself, I say I felt my soul dying. I was able to break through this, but more often than not, the person under these conditions usually breaks. And far, far quicker than his three years, my 12 plus, or the old lifer. Two weeks... Two weeks before brain damage begins. If this guy DIDN'T get PTSD from his service in the Corps, he got it during his psyche-unit visit.
Jake Tapper is practically crying, feeling so empathetic for Trevor and his family, and what they must have gone through. However, there's a weird part of this story that would be helpful to include in every piece about Trevor, and that is how he got in this situation in the first place. There are also a few small mysteries involved, one which we don't know because Trevor himself was too drunk to remember what happened when the police took him away. One lesson here is that if you are a foreigner visiting a country like North Korea or Russia, and that you know you become out of control when drunk and can't remember what you are doing, don't get drunk. It is risky. And it's a risk for everyone around you, too. Trevor's girlfriend and her friends tried to drive a very drunk and unrulyTrevor home after the party, but at a stop light, Trevor got out of the car and would not get back in. Should they have left him to wander around Moscow totally drunk? No, that could have ended very badly. Why, when ordinary Russians usually do not trust the police, would Trevor's friends trust the Russian police to get him to a drunk tank safely, especially when they knew Trevor didn't speak Russian very well, was an American, and might resist police handling him?
I hope he writes a book, and a true story is made into a movie, therefore, he’ll reap the benefits he wholeheartedly deserve. I can definitely hear the accent…. Much ✌🏻 and healthy journey to full recovery!

Every single person I've ever met and in my family who worked in O&G, the Marines, Navy, etc., all said one thing about going to Moscow: That it was one of the best places they'd ever visited. All of them took multiple trips over decades. Embassy duty, business, vacation..

She was 15 years younger than my dad and she convinced him that I was a liar. It was a gift to be sent to a boarding school (chartwell manor in mendham NJ) where I found that gift had turned to a curse with horrible sexual abuse.
My mom died when I was age 11and after that my life was torture until I joined the army at age 17. It's amazing what humans can endure but it's cost me much and prevented me from normal life. I've been through addiction and divorce and more pain than a person should know.
Through it all I have not become an abuser of any sort, I care for stray animals and try to help where I am able. Suffering is not fun and those that cause it are barely human.
I don't know why but your comment hit me like a brick. I guess other kids (all of us at Chartwell manor) have suffered much the same. The suicide rate of my fellow students there is much higher than national average and addiction was pretty common.
May I ask where and when of your story? I'm glad that the world takes abuse of children seriously now. I was crying out to everyone and even escaped that school and went to the police who returned me to that place and we're convinced by the principle (and my abuser) that I was merely a troubled kid and a liar.
Sometimes I would cry myself to sleep thinking about life before my mom died and I missed her so much I thought I would die from sorrow if not abuse. The man (Terrence Lynch) who owned the school ended up going to prison and then re-offended upon release.
Life sure is unfair, I am broke, renting and my health is failing and the only joy I have is helping animals through their suffering and fears. I wish I had more money to pay for veterinary services and maybe make sure these animals are cared for better and when I die.

My youngest son tattooed his finger and told me on the phone. Man was I up set Im 70 and grew up in the .old school. He said he was thinking of his brother who was in Afghanistan as a ranger airborne when he did it. I asked him what he put on his hands so he says he wrote "NO HOPE". MAN WAS I pissed. Knew we almost lost him there after 18 months straight in combat. He really looks up to his older brother. So I became a different person when he showed me his hands for they said "KNOW HOPE" . Said never give up hope and faith that he would see his brother again and he did. Made me really stop jumping to conclusions that I know everything for I truly don't. I thank the Lord for my children he's been good to mom and me. I keep the faith that one day we'll all be together again as mom passed away 3 and a half years ago. She did see her oldest come back from Afghanistan a beautiful man. Wish I'd of had my complete family longer but it is what it is. Knowing I'm luckier than many so love your family members as best you can time is what can never be returned but love surely can and does.

U.S. prisons may be violent, but nothing compared to overseas prisons. I worked in Bangkok and had to drive past what is considered the most violent prison in the world. Just being near the place gave me the creeps. I saw a special documentary on Russian prisons and while health conditions are basically clean, the treatment is rough and the prisoners are treated like dogs. I guess the phrase “ Can’t do the time, don’t do the crime” really applies outside the U.S.
I did same except in southern Philippines, the inmates didn't eat unless their relatives brought them food.

I used to be criminal attorney in Russia 20+ years ago. To see our clients, we had to go to jail in special room, what was pretty much like cell. One of my client was placed in psychiatric facility for treatment. Few months later, I literally couldn't recognize him - they made him psychic out of normal human beings. This guy thanks God looks normal, but I only can imagine how much they broke him down. Unbelievable cruelty

Given your experience, what would be the rationale of his Russian girlfriend, a recent law school graduate, after Trevor getting really drunk at a party, and having friends try to drive him home so he could safely sleep it off, when he got out of the car at a stop light and they couldn't get him back in, she called the police. I would guess that she thought that was a better idea than having him wandering the streets drunk and possibly getting into bad trouble. But it goes against my understanding that most young people in Russia avoid contact with police and the court system at all costs, because you never know what is going to happen, especially when her boyfriend is an American who speaks Russian poorly, and is an ex-Marine.
What I would like to know is in Russia, do the Russian police have some special abilities to deal with drunk people safely, or do some Russian citizens think this?

Speaking about prisons or jails, it is always a hellish place most of the time. Sometimes a prison is a place where it makes you appreciate and gives meaning what the other side is like. When you encounter someone whose mindset is healthy and is free of what we heard being said here then it can become something different depending who is with you. The majority of times though any prison or jail is HELL. Even in the US many prisons could look clean in the outside and that helps a lot, but mentally is pure hell on Earth. No one needs to die to know what hell is, right here it is created by people's mindset.

Insurance for medical is mandatory so everyone is “covered” for medical care. It saddens me that so many countries lack even the basic care; safety, a good place to sleep and healthy food.

OK? Trevor Reed got in trouble twice in Russia that we know of. And both times involved alcohol, drunkenness, public intoxication, acting out and the accusation of some violence? His girlfriend handed him over to the police with the intention that he would go to a drunk tank and detox. She couldn't handle him. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. Other countries have other laws.
If you are in a foreign country, you could live more accountable. I've met a few Americans in other countries that claim innocence when the get busted fooling around. When I am abroad, I am careful about drinking, about who I am with, about who has access to my housing, my bags, my belongings.
In fact, that is my philosophy here at home in the US. For me, alcohol and crowds don't mix well. Even if I behave, I might bump into a belligerent drunk that needs to go to a drunk tank.
I read that his 2020 "violence" was grabbing the steering wheel while in the police car and trying to drive it off the road. (His girlfriend says she followed the police car and it did not swerve.) But I would guess it was not easy getting him in the car either. I agree that his girlfriend must have been at the end of her rope with him, more than him just not wanting to get back in the car, when she and her friends were just trying to get him home safely. "I was too drunk to remember anything," is not a good defense.
I'm an American and worked in Brazil during the late 1970s when it was a military dictatorship, and I agree with you 100% about the need to be careful never to violate laws. Same when I lived in Europe.
When I was in college, and drinking as minimally as I do now, I had a good friend who was a kind, fun person, who turned mean when drinking. If that could happen to him, what can alcohol do to some aggressive, really disturbed people who are that way without drinking?

I had a feeling there's a lot more under the surface to his arrest than what was shared with the public. Being a former marine, he could've been in Russia for work-related stuff that got him into trouble. In any case, being locked up in any country as a foreigner with no in-prison support is 10 times worse. You stick out like a whale in a school dolphins. Of all human emotion, hope is most awful.... Hope fulfilled is relief. Hope denied is devastating. When you choke down the scale and range of human emotions and feeling, you begin to feel the fabric of yourself fray and unravel. Myself, I say I felt my soul dying. I was able to break through this, but more often than not, the person under these conditions usually breaks. And far, far quicker than his three years, my 12 plus, or the old lifer. Two weeks... Two weeks before brain damage begins. If this guy DIDN'T get PTSD from his service in the Corps, he got it during his psyche-unit visit.

Jake Tapper is practically crying, feeling so empathetic for Trevor and his family, and what they must have gone through. However, there's a weird part of this story that would be helpful to include in every piece about Trevor, and that is how he got in this situation in the first place. There are also a few small mysteries involved, one which we don't know because Trevor himself was too drunk to remember what happened when the police took him away.
One lesson here is that if you are a foreigner visiting a country like North Korea or Russia, and that you know you become out of control when drunk and can't remember what you are doing, don't get drunk. It is risky. And it's a risk for everyone around you, too. Trevor's girlfriend and her friends tried to drive a very drunk and unrulyTrevor home after the party, but at a stop light, Trevor got out of the car and would not get back in. Should they have left him to wander around Moscow totally drunk? No, that could have ended very badly. Why, when ordinary Russians usually do not trust the police, would Trevor's friends trust the Russian police to get him to a drunk tank safely, especially when they knew Trevor didn't speak Russian very well, was an American, and might resist police handling him?
I hope he writes a book, and a true story is made into a movie, therefore, he’ll reap the benefits he wholeheartedly deserve.

I feel for Trevor and what he has gone through but my quetion is " why would a person place themselve in a positon like he did." You ack me if I wanted a free trip to Russia, North Korea ect. and I would tell you HELL NO. I have some common sense and I am not going to place myself in that situation.
Every single person I've ever met and in my family who worked in O&G, the Marines, Navy, etc., all said one thing about going to Moscow: That it was one of the best places they'd ever visited. All of them took multiple trips over decades. Embassy duty, business, vacation..

I hope Trevor seeks therapy. Being a prisoner for 3 years... I can't image the impact that experience had on his mental health. He may have developed PTSD during that psychiatric stay.
