I have the fold and thr xl. I really like the fold, but something about the xl when i pick it up to use it makes me want to put my sim back in it. The xl seems more fluid to me
You earned another subscriber! Thanks for this informative review. I’m about to buy a phone after using iphone 6s for 8+ years (And I’m almost disgusted by how Apple stick to film line green color rendition - it cannot be corrected imo, once corrected, the photo gets flat). I take photos a lot for fun, and didn’t really find a reason to switch phones until I saw how pixel phones handle images quite dang close to the actual camera. Then when I demoed the Pro Fold, I was attracted a lot, tbh, by its larger screen. I was surprised how the Fold handled images whilst its much lower pixel counts, while not showing too much of “post-processing”, which any avid photo-takers wouldn’t like. I’m still not sure if I should choose a slightly better performing camera (Pro or Pro XL), or a larger screen availabiltiy (Fold), haha. But this was super useful!!
Thanks for the comment =) In case it helps with your buying decision, I've actually switched to the P9PXL 😆. The P9PF has worse battery life and a worse outside screen. I don't use the inner screen enough to compromise on those two aspects.
2:49 No, there is no downsampling. A common misunderstanding. It's analog binning, which makes a (for example) 48 megapixel sensor with a Quad Bayer color filter array behave like a 12 megapixel sensor with a Bayer color filter array. Not to be confused with downsampling a demosaiced high resolution image. That's also the reason why the dng files in the default mode only have 12 megapixel. The readout speed would be also much lower without analog binning and there would be much more read noise.
Great video and massively helpful!!! Any chance of doing a 3-way shootout comparing the XL, Fold, and an older generation like the Pixel 6 Pro (kinda like your 9XL/8 Pro/15 Pro Max video) to show generational improvements/comparisons? This might be a super niche request, but it'd also be an opportunity to do content that no one else seems to be doing and would be really helpful for those of us looking to upgrade who are torn between the Fold form factor and the superior cameras on the XL! Thanks!
Thanks for the comment and suggestion. I buy all these phones myself so unlike the professional channels I don't have access to every phone 😅. Unfortunately I don't have a Pixel 6 Pro handy to test with. If you're looking for my recommendation, if you are upgrading from a Pixel 6 Pro I think the 9XL is the one to get, the photo and video quality will be a big jump, plus you'll get stellar battery life and performance. If you are looking at the 9 Fold, I think the camera performance wont be any worse than the 6 Pro. I am noticing the 9 Fold battery life is worse than the 9XL but it might be less noticeable to someone upgrading from a 6 Pro. Honestly if camera performance is your priority I'd get the 9XL. If there's some large screen use case you think you'd use ie. looking at spreadsheets, reviewing PDFs, reading books/comics or doing work that needs a larger canvas then the 9 Fold is actually pretty good for it. Hope this helps.
Hey, great video! The only one I've seen comparing the 9 Pros vs the Fold cameras. Do you have any view on how the 10x (and maybe 20x) compared? Obviously resolution wise the fold will suffer, but were they useable, or rubbish? Thanks again 😊
I did a quick test, as you noted the 9 Pro's extreme zoom is better, but honestly, not by too much. The 9 Fold only goes up to 20x while the 9 Pro goes to 30x. In good light, the Fold is still okay, I would consider it 'usable'. However, I would not recommend you making any buying decision based on this zoom performance, because I wouldn't consider either that good. Simply put, that's not what these phones are designed for. If you're choosing between the 9 Fold and 9 XL I think you should be considering what large screen use cases you might have instead. Hope this helps.
FYI, the Fold has a 48mp primary camera. I noticed a lot of your comparisons were shot in 50mp mode for the XL and 12mp mode for the Fold (although there's not much difference either way with these tiny phone sensors).
@@wonked really? Even under the 'pro' settings? I never use the high-res mode on phones anyway, but that's still a pretty dumb omission for a phone with "pro" right in the name.
Interestingly the Fold is close to the XL or even looks a little better in some cases. Still I fell that the camera performance is not enough for me. It's definitely a step down from the 8 Pro I owned before. Especially the Ultra wide and Telephoto lenses are much worse. Becomes most visible when lighting is not optimal (doesn't even have to be night). Where it gets even worse is video, even in daylight you have noise and graininess in videos in darker areas with the Fold. Can be reduced by using video boost, but this prevents switching lenses during filming etc, also this costs some detail. I now ordered the 9 Pro XL and do my own comparison too. Then decide which one too keep. Apart from this I absolutely love the Fold, would be hard for me to let it go. But photography and taking videos is important to me.
I understand that the XL is better, but only if you zoom in on all your photos will you be able to see a big difference. I think my choice is the Fold.
You are right the sensor is physically 48mp but the Fold does not output 48mp files. Even the RAW files are only at 12mp, so I labelled them based on the actual file resolution. You can download the files from the link in the description to inspect yourself if you like =)
So sad the fold does not have the Pro cameras. Il the low light areas of the pictures the Fold is really improvising, the lack of precision is obvious.

I feel like the fold is 90% of the XL. Thanks for doing this! Puts my mind to rest, as Im switching between the 2 as soon as my Fold lands
Same lol. Typing on the XL but waiting on the Fold.
Was using the XL and got my Fold yesterday. But I am returning the fold, like the XL better for some reason I can't explain lol.
Yeah I have both but I don't think I'm keeping both!
Finally a proper camera review. The fold's camera is impressive for a foldable. Now only one review is left, flossy carters 😊
Lol I just watched him and for the mean time it's already made it in to his top 5
@@BR3WCITYx you need to wait for the synder cut edition 😆
Very comprehensive comparisons! Thanks for putting this together.
Really helpful. Thanks for all the work you put into this. Look forward to the video comparison.
Great video. I'm surprised by the fold. I liked the color processing on the fold more on quite a few of the pics.
Thanks really appreciate this style and the detail that you went into with this one!
Great video! Exactly the comparisons I wanted to see. Thank you!

Remember the folds ultra wide and telephoto cameras are 10 mp......great video btw can't wait to get the fold tomorrow
Damn, you're right. I knew a mistake would show up eventually 😂. Thanks for pointing this out.
Amazing video man. Ty. I was worried about sacrificing camera for the fold. But they look very close. Close enough for me
Very impressed by the Pixel Pro Fold. Thanks for the comparison !
Thank you for this! I'm a cameras freek and this was super helpful!
This is the video i wanted all along

@@wonked wow that’s interesting didn’t know that and no one talked about it. They let the RAW on XL output natural pixel but not on the fold?
Yes unfortunately, that is correct 🥲
Thank you
