    Nice review. I been thinking of getting one.

    Just got one. Yet to use it. Thanks for the warning about the solder coiling up inside.

      There is a learning curve, at the end of the day you are pushing on a rope, so it's amazing it works at all 🤣

    Here's why it bunches up inside the roller. Decrease the roller pressure, this way when the wire feed is stuck, the rollers slip instead of coiling up the wire. Same happens in mig welder

    Looks handy for thru hole components when you need to hold it so it wont fall

      It's one of those things, you can get by with a regular iron, but when you need this, you really need this!

    I don't have this style of solder sucker yet but i might not hate it. I use a modified ZD190. For one i have cut away the sheath, since my thumb won't reach to the plunger top button; and i replaced the slanted plunger top with a 3D printed one of my own which is flat. Now here i could cut if off just the same, but the plunger top is already flat. Like this, i can reset the solder sucker by whacking it on my thigh instead of trying to do it with my thumb.
    Recently i added another modification, i shortened the tip just a little and pulled a piece of RC fuel line (silicone tubing chemical and temperature stable, 4mm OD, 2mm ID) over the tip. This make it more similar to the Engineer one again. I really like this modification, it has been an improvement.
    If i end up manufacturing something and need to optimise efficiency, i may consider this gun, i'm sure it can be set up to not cause trouble, and the way they had it from the factory with solder not going on the very tip is likely the way to go, but i don't feel like i'm likely to need or want it - i might as well be better off to develop a nice fixturing setup for whatever it is i'm making and just feed the solder with one hand and solder with another.

    That's an interesting concept; with improved quality on the ratchet mechanism, and variable temperature, it could be very handy for automotive or other awkward jobs where you need 3 hands. Not sure if I would use it for PCB work though.

      There is a new green and orange model that's 80 watts, the feed mechanism on the inside is definitely built better than this one, it's also a three-prong cord with a ground. (Never use two prong soldering irons on PCBs unless you want to destroy them) I bought one and actually like to use it on PCB where I want to be super accurate on using a tiny tad bit of solder

    9:21 - 9:38, does it not matter when the soldering iron rests on the circuit without any solder to melt for few seconds? Like wouldn’t the heat eventually toast the circuit board?
    Also, so flux is not really necessary?

  • @SplendorSolis
    @SplendorSolis ปีที่แล้ว +1

    JBC actually sells a much higher quality, more reliable version of this tool model number AP250-A; it's much more expensive though and requires a station. There's also the AP130-A and a more traditional wand-style AL250-B.

    • @backofficeshow
      @backofficeshow  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would be really interested to see how the feed works on their one. I think that is what makes it breaks these devices

      @SplendorSolis ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, this is a great idea especially for disabled individuals. With a better mechanism, I'm sure this would function much better.

    • @backofficeshow
      @backofficeshow  ปีที่แล้ว

      After using it for a while now, I have developed a knack for it. As long as you give the joint time to heat up the solder will not bind up. With a little flux it really is quite fast

      @@backofficeshow That could be cool, maybe you could stick it onto a proper soldering iron, this one looks like a clone of hakko in terms of build

      If you have a vape mod box with a 510 thread on the deck (even a single 18650 cell mod) you can buy 510 soldering tip from temu and screw the soldering tip into your vape and use it as a soldering iron. There is a video on this on TH-cam, so if you need a cordless soldering gun, that is an option.

      Alas that is the case. But in his important that is I guess it depends on how you run your iron. I tend to leave mine on the hot side. No different than traditional irons really

    The solder that's included with these kits are absolute garbage do not ever use them for repairing PCBs or electronics. You want to use a three-pronged soldering iron one with the ground wire If it doesn't have a ground wire it's not worth destroying your components. Also you want to use solder with a low melting point for electronics as well let's say you're working on a console or a computer motherboard They all use low melt solder. Don't use ANYTHING ELSE or again you will ruin your components I've been soldering for 20 years, I was taught to solder by a man who soldered for 75 years of his life and worked for the military. My pawpaw could solder a mainboard while cramped up in a m1 abrams, while getting shot at, with a fire in the rear passenger compartment. I know this because it actually happened and him repairing their communication equipment was the only reason they made it home mostly alive.

    If I ever lose a hand, I'll reconsider. Barring that, what a cheap, useless device this POS appears to be. Still, appreciate the review. 👍🏻

      I think if you want to solder a component surrounded by others and the access is narrow , this tool will be useless

    Tips are not compatible with and wood burning tips. I would rather see an auto feeding soldering gun with interchangeable tips like the ones that screw in with a wood burner/solder kit. Because once your tip is worn out, your done. 👎 also the picture on the box is for the wrong gun

    Looks like a child’s toy. Janky as a janky thing. And how long until the solder drips into the nozzle and permanently blocks it. Can’t imagine it will be any good whatsoever for SMD. I watched to the end so you’ll get your engagement credit 😀 but I won’t be buying one.

    • @backofficeshow

      Definitely only a through hole tool that's for sure!
      I'll show it to you in person some time, not as crappy as it looks. I was using it in anger this week, and definitely earns it's keep, albeit for a specific use case
