In the first couple of years of the park, the best way to explore the river and see Big Thunder Mountain were the Indian canoes. You got much closer to the island and had a different perspective than from the big boats. Shame they got rid of them. You can still experience them at Tokyo Disneyland and (in a different setting than Frontierland) at Shanghai Disneyland.
