How to Untangle Knotted Chains

- Untangling a knotted chain can be a frustrating and intimidating experience. In this video Arden Jewelers gemologist, Angelo, will show you three techniques to help you unknot your own chains at home.
1. Gently roll the knot between your thumb and finger to loosen the knot.
2. Push pointed tweezers into the knot and let them expand to loosen it further.
3. Use paperclips to pull the knot apart little by little.

Thank you so much! I was Baptized into the Orthodox Church on Sunday, and I was given my first cross necklace. I woke this morning to find that the chain of my necklace had somehow got a knot in it! I was getting a bit frustrated and annoyed with myself, I had been trying to use a sewing needle to get it untangled but couldn't get it into the gap, but your suggestion of rolling the knot between the fingers to loosen it did the trick! You've saved me a trip to the jewellers, and probably a few quid too!

This absolutely works. I spent over an hour trying to use some surgical tools to untangle a chain for my wife with absolutely no progress. I watched this and had them untangled in 15 minutes.

This is the best technique. I untangled a big ball of knots from even more thin chain than the one shown in this video with the use of tweezers/pluckers. I was struggling for 3 days

I had spent over an hour trying to untangle my necklace. I untangled most of it on my own but there were two ridiculously tiny knots left that I couldn't get out even after half an hour of dedication. I honestly thought it was a lost cause and that these methods wouldn't work, but I combined all of the methods and I finally FINALLY got it completely untangled. Thank you!

if u don’t have tweezers use a clip open it and insert in the center of the knot like where u see the chain overlaps onto another this can be seen by the direction or angle anyway after rubbing the knot in the beginning get the clip through it then rub it again while the clip is inside keep rubbing it until the knot loosens up just keep at it y’all eventually be able to just untangle it

My necklace is tangled on my neck. I unclasped it but the two ends has knitted together. I can’t really see it too well since it’s on my neck. Any tips?
Hmm, that's a tough one. If it's not too badly knotted, you might be able to use some of the techniques described in the video (tweezers and rolling the knot in between your fingers) in front of a mirror to help untie it. Or, a friend might be able to help you untangle it. Failing that, it might be best to go into a local jewelry shop and have them cut it off and solder it back together.

Do you use the same technique when trying to straighten the links in a wheat chain bracelet?
Good question. Yes, the same basic techniques work for wheat chains, cable chains, rope chains, necklaces, bracelets, etc. Of course, depending on how tangled the chain is it might take more effort or it might require cutting and resoldering. If you get stuck, your local jeweler should be able to help. :)

Hmm, that might be a tough one. :) As long as it's not broken, you should be able to untangle it with these techniques. If it is broken, we would be happy to fix it for you. Feel free to bring it by if your are in the Sacramento area. If not, I would look for a local jeweler that does on-site repairs.
If apply oil on chain, it helps more to untangle.

Good question. In general, we don't recommend it only because most of the time it's not needed and it makes for a lot of additional clean up work after you're done. If you're really stuck and the ideas in the video aren't working, I would recommend bringing it to a local jeweler before resorting to oil.

Easy way to untangle any jewelry chain is to use two toothpicks, or any non metal points. Place Gordian knot on smooth table and tap tap tap on knot to relax it with toothpick. Alternate between relaxing knot as needed and pulling away chains from each other with toothpicks. Untangles fast with no damage.
Good tip! Toothpicks can work very similar to the paper clips we use in the video. :)
@@ArdenJewelers Paper clips are made of metal. They can damage the chains, scratch your tables. If you tap tap tap the knot it will very quickly relax but if it is tapped by a metal object that can bend or crack the individual links.

I'm sorry to hear that. When they get very tangled like that it can take a long time to loosen the knot. Sometimes the chain may even need to be cut and put back together. If you are in the Sacramento, CA area you can bring it by our shop, and we would be happy to take a look for you.

Hi Cynthia, if they are too tangled for these techniques to work you can always get some help. Maybe bring your necklaces into a local jeweler that does on-site repairs to see if they can help you. Our jewelers can untangle most knots. If they are really bad, they might need to be cut and soldered back together, but we can do that too.

I'm sorry to hear that. Some knots can be very tough and may even require the chain to be cut and repaired. At this point, I would recommend bringing the chains in to a local jeweler to see if they can untangle them.
But what if the knot is at the clasp
Those can be tough. Most of the techniques in the video should still work, albeit with a bit more effort. But, if it's just not working, your best bet may be to bring it in to a local jeweler.
