    Why Not RV: Episode 41 - New Hitch install. Today we show you how to install the Puck System fifth wheel hitch into my Silverado, this is the same process for all GM, Ford and Nissan trucks with the puck system. Overall a very simple install, took only about 30 minutes. Be sure to comment below if you have any questions I can try to help answer.

    I went with the Blue Ox in my 17 Duramax. Love the ride it provides and it breaks down in 3 pieces for removal.
    Look at the Truxedo low profile Velcro roll up cover. It’s only 3/4 in tall.

      Great to hear!!! I just towed almost 2000 miles with it. Couldn’t love it more. So much smoother than the standard king pin fifth wheel hitch combo. Only downside is the hitching procedure is more difficult but I’m sure will get easier with time.

    I just installed the hitch in my 2021 Chevy 3500HD. I don’t have the trailer yet so I started with the middle height and with mounting rails back so it sits 1.5 - 2 inches back from the cab. I guess I could spin the hitch base around 180 degrees and it would be centered over the axels. I didn’t install that spring on the rail arm yet and it looks like a pain in the ass to tap it on with a hammer, which you conveniently left off LOL

    • @WhyNotRV
      @WhyNotRV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don’t use the spring. It fell off a couple times and realized I didn’t need it lol. Ya definitely a pain to get it on lol 😂

    I have a 2020 GMC. Came with a Curt 5er hitch. Rides smooth but has quirks when hitching and unhitching. Jaws dont open with the handle but when you pull away. Thinking of changing to the B&W

    • @WhyNotRV
      @WhyNotRV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve had B&W the whole time I’ve hauled. Never had an issue.

  • @MrExrench

    Good install video, have you considered an anti theft locking device? I just put the same hitch and noticed the head pin holes are just a tad smaller than 1/2" so a 1/2" pin lock wont fit. I got locks on the base puck levers.

    • @WhyNotRV
      @WhyNotRV  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not considered it just because I’m either towing or the bed cover is closed. But every situation is different

    Great video 👍 Just got a 2022 Chevy 3500 HD for our 5er. Getting the Companion based on the reviews. Just curious, how did you decide on the 25K hitch vs the 20K version? Is your 5th wheel that heavy?

    • @WhyNotRV
      @WhyNotRV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just wanted the hitch that had less limitations. Being able to pull the weight if needed for anything other than the rig.

    I just looked at the B&W 25K on etrailer. The one in the picture showed "25K", in blue, before the word Companion. The 20K didn't say. Are you positive yours is the "25K"?

    • @WhyNotRV
      @WhyNotRV  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      At the time of this install …. I can’t specifically remember. I think it was just the 20k which was more than necessary for the rig I had at the time.

  • @scottsheehan6897
    @scottsheehan6897 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just curious . Did you have to lower the hitch or did you leave it in the highest setting ?

    • @WhyNotRV
      @WhyNotRV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I kept it high as I do a lot of Boondocking I find myself In some pretty sticky situations and the extra height definitely makes a difference

    Was that a slider hitch you removed? Why did you change to a non-sliding hitch?

    • @WhyNotRV
      @WhyNotRV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This truck didn’t come with a hitch. My previous truck I had a slider hitch in due to it being a standard bed. This truck has an 8 foot long bed and does not need a sliding hitch so that’s why I went with this one

    • @46fd04
      @46fd04 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WhyNotRV Thank you for that info. My 2019 shortbed RAM came with a regular Curt Q20 hitch. My first season, I had 2 near misses with very tight turns. I converted it to a slider in Nov.2020. Best decision I made.

    • @WhyNotRV
