    She left out the fact that most of those runaway slaves were in fact “Seminole” or Yamasee people that were stolen and enslaved. The Seminole would raid plantations to recover their tribal members. Others were welcomed to join them or leave to the north. She also left out that one of the Seminole wars was started over the honor of a “black woman”, Chief Osceola’s wife that was stolen and sold into slavery. They sent out an army of warriors and declared war to get her back. Yes, one so-called black woman was so valuable that they started a war for her. These people were Seminoles, not “black Seminoles” or “red Seminoles”-they were Seminoles, period. It’s offensive to separate them from their tribal by adding “black” to it. They don’t add things to anyone else but us-as if we are different or less than. When these so-called black people were running this tribe.

      It's bull sht that's why. In The sixties I lived around native Americans in the south and in Colorado. All I was told by elder native Americans is that blacks were not respected as the native Americans would rather fight to the death or sit and starve to death before they would accept being a slave. A proud and noble people would hunt runaway slaves kill then cut off the ears for a reward for white slave hunters blacks were rarely aloud to be accepted and only blacks that had pride and fought for their freedom. Today black on black slaves rampid in Africa and after the Democrats killed Kadafe Libya is the slave trade market of the world. 3 to 5 thousand dollars for a slave to be shipped to your door

      tereseus They will. It's only a matter of time. Part of the problem is the story is so big, spanning so many years and characters and places. It's hard to compress it enough for a Hollywood feature. The second problem is that the sources aren't always clear and often conflict. Any attempt to tell the story as a single narrative will lead to a Game of Thrones type of series, I think, but without the details Game of Thrones provides unless one fictionalizes. And this story is too important to play fast and loose with. If it's done right it should be told as truthfully as it can be. There's enough exciting stuff there to warrant a truthful retelling. Do you know the episode where John Horse stands down a whole war party of charging Indians and turns them with an empty rifle?

      @@jamaalstrachan242 yes, I think streaming in a series is probably the best way to go. There's so much to tell, so much to show. John Horse is the centerpiece but there are others over the decades associated with the Seminole story.
      Maybe multiple series here. Lots to work on. Where are the production companies, eh? My guess is they are waiting for the right package. I saw someone recently made a film about Bass Reeves, the long forgotten black U.S. marshal who became a lawman in Indian Territory (Oklahoma) after the Civil War. Why not John Horse, too?

    Greeting to all who have watched. I am from Nacimento and born here in the US. I am also a Marine veteran. My grandfather was chief of Nacimento not very long after John Horse and Wild Cat reigned. I am visiting my people this summer, and I will let them all know that people are rediscovering us.

      Your ancestors didn't fight the Civil-War to free anybody ... if you knew the history you're foaming about ... that War was fought to preserve The Union !
      Secondly, your ancestors were not the only ones fighting in that War. The Black Soldiers were actually the ones fighting for their freedom AND long before your ancestors were in the War, there were a number Slave Rebellions ( it's a safe bet, your ancestors weren't participating in those struggles ).

      kenny Boy Because the white settlers were rapacious and mired in a world view that didn't recognize other people as people like themselves. That changed but it took years and a great deal of pain. The Indians got driven out and the blacks, who fought to keep from falling into slavers' hands again, went with them, only to get screwed a second time in Indian Territory. But U.S. Army officers by then felt an obligation to them and worked to protect them from the predations of Arkansas, Cherokee and Creek slavers. The Creek were the source of the Seminole bands but, unlike the Seminole who lived a more wild life in Florida, the Creek were more acculturated to white ways and adopted the practices and institutions of the whites, including plantation slavery. Thus, in Indian Territory, the old Seminole-African alliance was faced with new challenges which ripped their one time alliance apart.

    I am a Black Seminole and I recently discovered there are Hispanics in my family. The Seminoles in my family are from Florida. I wondered how the Hispanics got in. Also interesting that I have a B.A. in Spanish. This is a great story. It ties my family history together. I am going to read more on this.

      I know I'm years late, and there's a complex web of layers regarding the Spanish to peel here, but most likely they were either:
      1) black or indigenous folk who lived in what was then Spanish or Latin American territory and took Spanish names
      2) mixed with Spanish, Latin American or the above people
      The Spanish were and are a walking contradiction of colonizers, something observers and historians have a hard time comprehending in trying to grasp the nuances of the cultures they created. Blackness and Africanness are an integral but hidden part of that identity, and a lot of people on both sides of the equation have a lot more connection with each other than they realize or want to admit

      There is no mystery about the Spaniards’ race problem. The Western concept of race comes from the Spaniards, who created the Casta system. Post “Dark Ages,” after 700 years of Moorish rule, Spain was a nation of mulattoes with some remaining groups of Caucasians who did not integrate with Moors, mostly religious groups-like Ladinos (Iberian Jews)-and previous monarchs, the ones who colluded to oust the Moors. In order to diminish Moors’ previous ruler status, they publicly denounced “morros” (Moors/Mauros) and exalted the Ladinos and monarchs. Throughout Latin America, you will find the Ladino silent hand, ruling nations’ economies and policies. A mestizo face is put forward to create an image of desirable and proximal “whiteness.” The Indios were only exalted if they intermixed with Spaniards or mulatto Spaniards. The Indios who remained with their own people were placed at the very bottom of the caste, below Africans; Latin America still maintains this caste, which is problematic for white Westerners, whose own caste systems placed Asiatic “Native Americans” above Black Indigenous and African people.     I was born in Southwest Georgia. My family has a strong Creek and Cherokee Indian heritage. My grandmother would tell us how the Seminole tribes protected our ancestors during slavery times. Some of my ancestors ,cousins ended up down in the Everglades as the Micasookee tribe. I don't remember how, but the Micasookee and the Seminole tribes are intertwined somehow. Remember: This was passed on to me by my Grandparents, I can't verify it or not. But I do know that we have a strong resemblance to Native Americans, and I feel proud and humbled when I visit the Micasookee Reservation on the I-75 Alligator Alley.

    Wow, another reason to emphasize why we need to teach our own history, and not settle for a sanitized retelling of it. My grandfather introduced me to oral history in the late 70's. I introduced it to my children in 2000 and beyond. The oral family and overall history pointed them to books they will not hear about in public schools. Beautiful documentary, peace.

    Black Seminole is redundant. Seminole means Maroon or Run away. Much like General Jessup said the Seminole war was a "Negro war."

      John Horse was not Bahamian and he was not an Indian . He was the mixed child of a Spaniard mixed Indian father and his African descendants slave Charles Caballo was his father, John Caballo is his name. Caballo is translated to Horse. He was living in a maroon community on Seminole territory. He made deals with the Seminole to keep his family from continuing to be slaves to Seminole.

      Rastafari Mulah First, get your facts straight before commenting. Secondly, Maroons have never been exclusive to Jamaican Maroon, perhaps the most known maroons but not the only ones. Maroon literally means African/Black people who created settlements away from Chattel Slavery; Maroons existed throughout the Americas. Secondly, John Horse wasn’t Bahamian because he was an African American (mixed), however, I do understand where the confusion comes from- Black Seminoles migrated to the Bahamas at one point, as they migrated to other parts of the America/Western world, as well. Like Mexico, Cuba, Oklahoma, etc.

    This is information that should be in every school across the country. I am 30 years old and barely figuring this information out. This needs to be taught to our children of color so they know that slavery did not go on without a fight. When I was in school I always asked myself why didn't anyone ever fight back? It is important to know that yes, we did fight back.

    My grandfather is Khoisan. My grandmother is Sierra Leonean. They were in South Carolina wayyyy before Slavery. What I don't like is they forget about the story of them stealing diamonds from us 🤔 My ancestors traded diamonds with the Seminoles way before Europeans came here and enslaved. From Sierra Leone to Charleston, Hilton Head etc. all the way down to the Everglades. So when you speak on *John Horse* dont forget to tell that he's Gullah and the blood diamonds they stole from us right here in America. Also how we made it all the way to Mexico. Unconquered.     Actually Seminole was never a tribe it meant runaways because the enslaved ppls and native tribes fleeing rival tribes as well as whites. It was called the GULLah wars they changed it so whites wouldn't look stupid. This lasted 100 years.

Oh I'm sticking to the curriculum, and Common Core.I just taking it to a whole new level because this is NOT TAUGHT!

    The Seminoles also took in Creeks and Cherokees fleeing removal, Irish Indentured Servants, and settlers who were poor. It was a mix of the nation truly.

    She left out the part regarding "The Gullah War" which occurred from 1729 to 1863, and, truth be told, was one of the main reasons Lincoln signed The 13th Amendment, The Seminoles played a role in that war as well.

    ‘The State of Jones’ by Sally Jones and John Stauffer, documents a rebellion of Confederate Army deserters who joined a state in the Everglades populated by runaway slaves and Seminoles. They were first to use sawed off shotguns filled with nails and metal pieces to defend themselves. ‘The State of Jones’ is a unique history book published in 2009.

    Wow, my wife's people (on her father's side) is a decedent of the Black Seminoles. After the Civil war some of them moved back into Texas and settled in a town called Brackettville. My wife's grandparents (and some of their sister's & brothers) eventually relocated to the Silicon Valley/Bay area of California.

    Wow that is amazing. I never heard of this story until now. This story really should be told. We just had 12 years a slave (even though it was an independent film). I hope that this story will be told on the big screen. Since I am black, I can only speculate that it may be hard for other Americans to have movies about a national disgrace. (Much like I have heard that Germans have a hard time watching Captain America movies because they don't like to see a bad moment in their history be retold.) Well hopefully we can move forward together and make a nation worth of its founding statement "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights". I still think that one sentence gives America some sense of direction although it surely has fallen short of its goal.

    Also I must add that the “Black Seminoles/Afro Seminoles” are of the Gullah Geechee. The Gullah Geechee’s are the sea island Creoles along the coastal islands and mainlands of Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida.

      @Derrick Culler The Great Migration is when Blacks moved from the south to the north in pursuit of better work and escape the racist south after slavery. We know that all Black are Descendants of Africans; and the Gullahs are definitely descendants of many West African cultures and peoples. I know this because I am Gullah Geechee. Our culture is majority African & Native American. We are a Creolized people and culture with heavy ties to the Caribbean as well.

    Proud of the ancestors for standing their ground and fighting. They could've marched around holding up signs in protest, song songs while chanting, attended long drawn out speeches heard time and time again or even killed each other cause they lived in neighborhoods with people having the same skin color but they didn't. They stood together in solidarity and fought for what was rightfully theirs.
