    I'm always amazed at what people can do with a tight budget but a lot of hard work and elbow grease! What a transformation! So inspiring to get out and see what kind of makeover you can achieve with not much more than what you already have. Thanks for sharing!

    You did a great job! For anyone planning on doing a similar project, I might suggest a power wash on the old pavers to clean them up first so they better match the new ones. 👍

      Or paint the whole patio one color...

  • @fablesofbeasts
    @fablesofbeasts 4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    The fabric that used isn't technically for patios, they make one specifically for that, though it can be costlier. However, if you use the staples on any fabric it will stay in place. Also, there is a paver base if there is enough depth and leveling needed that you put down before the sand. It helps stabilize everything to create less work on leveling. For those wondering about sealing the cracks or preventing movement, there is polymeric sand you can put between the blocks.

    I love it the only thing I would have changed, since your cinder flooring
    blocks are obviously different in color because of the weathering.. I would have used an old and a new all over to make it just easier on the eye and even look artsy

      Lol I was about to post the same thing, I calculated that they could’ve done an outer border with the new ones and have enough old ones to do a checker board effect... god bless COVID lockdown giving me time to work that out 😡!!!

  • @Bunefoo401
    @Bunefoo401 4 ปีที่แล้ว +143

    I don’t mean to sound like I’m telling you how to edit or film, but maybe a couple of minutes showing the tamping of the dirt, a couple of sanding, and a couple of the staining the 2x4’s instead of 5 minutes on you staining ... that was a little redundant, whereas the others interspersed would have at least been a change.
    Also, suggestion on spray painting ..l break down a cardboard box to put behind the item you’re spraying to avoid too much over spray ... it helps prevent wind from grabbing your paint, and it will be better on the environment.

    Looks great! Just one tiny caution. When you get a heavy or sustained rainfall, keep an eye on the area where the pavers meet the house. Depending on how far you all dug down to place the pavers it may have damaged the grade that the builder put on the yard area to make sure that rainfall moves away from the foundation walls.

      Can you explain more deep about you're talking??! It's very interesting and I would love to know more about it of something I don't know much! Thanks in advance 😊

    • @Samanosuke817
      @Samanosuke817 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@cluisap what Krickette is saying is you want those brick pieces on the ground (pavers) and especially the dirt ground that they are resting on to be slanted/sloped away from your house. You want water to move away from your foundation instead of water pooling near it.

    Hi, when you use the garden fabric, you secure it in place with pins that you can get at your local nursery. The fabric is wonderful to use.
    Best wishes

      Agree. Landscape “staples” are a must for the fabric. They sell them at big box stores, too. Usually right next to the fabric. I get mine in bulk from Amazon.

  • @lemonielala3080
    @lemonielala3080 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    For preventing weeds in a way that is much easier than the fabric: you can just brush a mixture of sand and cement in between the pavers and watering everything afterwards which seals it up preventing weeds. If you live in a super cold climate where that will just crack from the ground freezing there is a special flexible mix (pretty sure Romex is one) that works in stead. 👍

    • @MyBiPolarBearMax
      @MyBiPolarBearMax ปีที่แล้ว

      Look up “polymeric sand” is what its usually called.
      Best way to connect everything and prevent any weeds from being able to break through. If you use it properly it adheres everything all the way through and is great

    Obviously your video is a couple years old but it came through my feed because I have been watching diy videos for my small apartment patio. I’m a empty nester now and I’m done pretty much with decorating on a big scale most of my work life, my kids are also grown and have their own places independently. They are in your generation. I’m inspired mainly by your benches and how you did them. Im definitely considering them because of the ease in the accessibility of materials. The black blocks plus the contrast light and unpainted wood has a stunning modern effect, not even farm house themed. It can crossover modern eclectic. I love your bar area too. has given me some great ideas. Strict budget is music to my ears always. Youre both doing great jobs. The Asian in me is trained from childhood to do the financial accounting always before doing a project. Just our culture because where we come from poverty is a fact of life. Coming to the US and living great life does not make us forget that easily.
    Enjoyed this video much.

    Hey, I like all your updates, but I want to mention that if you install a patio near your hous's foundation you need to grade it properly, so the rain goes away from the house. I think this is probably what your meant, but do not "level" a patio, you need to slope down away from your house. I am currently dealing with a wet basement and foundation damage because the previous owners installed a paver patio wrong. The repairs cost thousands, and our beautiful finished basement was destroyed.

    Great job. It's been a year, gonna visit your channel, see how it looks now:) A good way to WATERPROOF that ART, is CLEAR DAP. Change the cardboard backing with something plastic, like a cutting mat. Between the glass & frame, have CLEAN HANDS, but also *wipe it gently with a smooth damp sponge*. Also, I learned this from experience... store straws in zip lock bags. Because spiders love to nest in straws.

    Hi, Being a seasoned DIYer, I know and have done some of those same mistakes. Here’s a saying I like... “Mistakes are proof that your trying”
    Regarding the cement block/pavers...Have you considered power washing them? I have poured concrete paths (which were put in by the previous owner) and I can power wash the paths using the round brush attachment. This attachment is an incredible time saver for the price! You might consider renting one or borrowing one.
    Additionally, if the cleaning of the older blocks doesn’t come out the way you’d like then, you might want to mix up the old and new blocks as people have suggested above or you could use a roller with a long nap (it looks thicker and kind of fluffy) and lay down a coat or two of stain. I’ve actually done something similar in another house I lived in and actually created an almost marbled effect. I used three colors of brown (one dark brown, one medium and one medium light) oh I forgot I also used (for some interesting effects) a little bit of white exterior paint which we had already. This was a project in itself, but sooo worth the effort. I then sealed it with three coats of concrete sealer-because it turned out like marble I didn’t want it to fade away or get destroyed. This idea might seem excessive or just going too far but, we have five kids. I didn’t want my patio surface to be so dark or light that would show the dried up dirt and debris ALL THE TIME, so I created something unique, interesting attractive as well as hide the debris. You might also like having a large heavy duty outdoor rug (I get mine at Lowe’s/Home Depot) at the bottom of the steps too. What an ego boost it was when we sold the house that patio was a selling feature especially after I trimmed it with bricks. You’ve done a great job, hope you find my comments helpful.

    You and your husband are certainly not afraid of hard work! Who ever y’all work for is a lucky employer! It’s almost impossible to find people who will actually work these days. I bet you are both great employees. I love every project video you do. You are so through with your research and you are liberal with your praise for each other during the project. I bet your kids love the playhouse project. I would love to redo one of those for my two year old great granddaughter and my four year old great grandson. I bet they would play with it for years. Great patio project. I love the home you two are making together.

    Great job! As a landscspe contractor, just one idea you might add.....some landscape plastic edging along the sides of the patio that meets the turf. They come with pegs that you nail down into the ground. The are 'L' shaped and com in long stops so it should t be too expensive. Itll help lock in your patio and keep the edges from heavy. Without it, the side are exposed to rain, etc and will start to turn and become un-level. There is also a "jointing" sand that you can sprinkled on top of your stones and brush in with a broom to fill the cracks on the top. Then spray with a hose. The water will lock and harden the jointing sand and act as a "concrete" in a sense. This will help control weeds. But you're right, you'll still want to be dillagent and watch for weeds that sprout up. Just some ideas I thought of while watching that will help prolong your investment.😁👍

    I'm curious about those vents at the base of your house. It seems like the rocks were there for rain drainage, and maybe keeping 6 inches or so for drainage, would have been a good idea. I don't know if those vents access the underneath of your house or not. The size increase of the patio is great though. Good job.

    To avoid having to take the frames down in bad weather, take the prints out and laminate them then put them back in.
    You can probably put 2 through a commercial laminator, sideways, at once and use less than 3 feet of laminate. It’s usually only about $0.25 a foot so under a dollar after tax if you find an office store with a commercial laminator. You could also use hot glue or silicone caulking to completely seal them if you can’t find somewhere with a commercial laminator, but that would be pretty time consuming.

    What a great amazing job. I would have pressure wash the pavers and put every other one a new one. Also for future reference you can make a homemade weed killer with a gallon of white vinegar a cup of salt and a tablespoon of dish soap to keep the weeds out of your patio. It's safe the only thing is is do not use salt in an area if you plan to plant other plants there sometime in the future because salt makes it on plantable for many years. But this homemade weed killer gets rid of weeds everywhere in your patio in your driveway and it's safe for your family. The garden fabric is a great way to block most weeds. When I did my patio we dug down quite a bit deeper then put the fabric down ,. Then added a small traffic bond stone and tampered it down to pack it tight. In Ontario the ground freezes in winter make patio stones heave. Best to let it settle for a few days then add patio stone doing the fine levelling as you go. I then fill the cracks in a polymeric sand between tiles to further block out weed growth 😉

I presently have done outside murals for my barn by using painters drop cloth...You could copy your leaves onto the canvas and paint it with acrylic paint.Also,you could put grommets across the top and hang the mural on a long tree limb on that wall making a nice backdrop for your serving bar.....
    I’ve made floor rugs from the canvas and treated it with outdoor polyurethane.that won’t yellow.....
    Just a suggestion.
    I’ve even taken stretched canvas and painted on it a farm scene and hung it in my garden area on the barn wall next to it.....
    Presently I’m painting a large waterfall outdoor scene and will place it on the wall under my upstairs deck that leads to my art studio......it’ll be my rest place and eventually I’ll hang some nice shower curtains as a shade cloth under the deck between the tree trunks supporting it....sort of a special space for relaxation.....
    Oh now I know what to do with my cinder blocks lying by my other barn....a potting bench...kuddos to you.
