Guiding Light: Character Profiler - Kat Speakes

Before Nia Long made it big being Will's girlfriend on Fresh Prince of Bel Aire she was rocking it as Kat Speakes. Kat first came off as sorta spoiled by not liking Gilly and hanging out with Bridget but she always had a level head. Once she started dating David their stories pretty much were the same and after David was cleared of any wrong doing in Vinnie's murder they were mainly seen at special events like weddings and holidays.

Now she's going to play Katherine Jackson in a Biopic about Michael Jackson's Life and his nephew Jaafar (Jermaine's Son), will be playing him. I'm sure folks thought Melissa Hayden woudl be big in Movies but it didn't happen. Also over the years alot of Motown Music was played on Guiding Light.

When it was okay for a black woman to and a black man to love each other on film and both be naturally beautiful and talented. Now in era of oppression its simply not okay its either segregated all together or a black man and white woman or white man and black woman. Not sure wtf is up with TV today but its sign of the times.

In Europe they do it and nobody blinks. Also it showed that Guiding Light had the Midas Touch for casting African American Actors who did quite well for them after leaving.

A lot of commercials show mixed race couples now. I first started noticing this just a few years ago. It's interesting.

Yeah. God forbid we show mixed race couples together in media. ::rolls eyes:: Good grief, how about we see it AS PROGRESS? Considering just 60+ years ago, television and movies weren't even **allowed** to show mixed race couples or even platonic mixed race friends physically interacting with each other due to miscegenation laws.

Nia Long, Jesse Martin, Roger Howarth? Wow! I knew Nia Long was on there, but not Jesse or Roger.

I knew I recognized the actor from somewhere and now I know it’s a young Jesse Martin. Jesse and Roger were both great actors… too bad they didn’t keep them around but it was already a full cast.

GL is the first place I was introduced to the actress Nia Long. I have been a fan of hers every since. There are few young women of color on daytime so I rooted for her. I watched her career grow after she left. I enjoyed the family they created at the time w Gilly and Hamp. It's too bad it did not last.
