    Great advice! I agree with everything you said, especially the mentor part. A lot of people think they shouldn’t go into the backcountry before taking a course. I think everyone should go into the backcountry with a competent mentor, staying on safe aspects and angles, of course, to practice the basic bc skills like you said-skinning, transitions, etc. You’ll definitely remember so much more of the avalanche education stuff in the courses when you don’t have to worry about the basic hike/ski/gear stuff.

    Some of this sounds ok, but own your gear? That's 1-2k in gear and some people just want to know if backcountry is for them or not...

      I know it sounds a little harsh but I think being familiar with your own gear is important especially when it comes to an avalanche situation. That’s why I think renting and doing uphill at your local resort is a great way to figure out if it’s something you’ll like. Or rent and go out with a competent mentor. Buying second hand is also a great option and will save you hundreds or thousands.
