I like this episode a lot because it starts the premise for a great episode later. All the blame for cancellation falls directly on Fox and bad management decisions.
This was the first episode I saw. I was cool with it. I saw characters that interacted with some familiarity. It left me wanting to know more about who and what they were. Unraveling those questions was part of the fun. I understand that not everyone thinks that way. But hey. If Fox didn't have political infighting then this show would have been fine.
There are some very piloty things about this episode, in that it re-introduces all the main characters with short little descriptions of who they are, why they're all on the ship, and why they don't much care for the Alliance.
I'm so glad that in the UK we got all the episodes in the correct order. Means I could enjoy this episode for what it was, rather than having it being the "pilot".

I think it's the second "worst" episode (Bushwhacked is the "worst"). But I emphasize the air quotes. Neither episode is bad by any stretch of the imagination. The rest of the series is just superior
Hahaha funny you should mention that... I definitely grew up in the 90s and had people telling me I looked like Macaulay almost every day. In my opinion I grew up to be a little better looking though 😜
Watched this the night it aired on fox and it was enough to hook me.... I do wish they'd started with the pilot though. When they finally aired the pilot the show hadn't been on for awhile and I was excited seeing there was going to be a new episode - - thinking that meant it hadn't been canceled (it had). Then I was very confused the whole time. They never gave any indication that it was an un-aired pilot, just another episode. I kept waiting for some sort of time jump to the character's present day and it never happened .

Maybe it would be best to wait until she watches the episode before you give your opinion about. To minimize the risk of influencing her judgement beforehand.
I blame Fox completely for the low ratings, airing it in the wrong order with up to six weeks of gaps between episode for sporting events was a bad call on Fox's part not Whedon's and not just the first ep last, but with four episodes from near the end airing near the beginning of the series. Joss Whedon's writing is complete gold.
But... it's not the episode's fault. It didn't choose to be aired out of order! Also, my understanding was that the second episode featuring a certain character aired before their first one, so... it's clearly not alone in its shame. DAMN YOU FOX!!!!
Your advice pushed me over the edge and I finally ordered the Blu-ray box set with a video extra and commentary for "Our Mrs. Reynolds." The price was right. Looking forward to the other original commentaries. The good news is that you're avoiding an annoying habit your predecessor had during the videos. He would creepily stare at his co-host to watch her reaction at crucial moments. Not only was he telegraphing something coming up, but it was visually off-putting. Otherwise, I'm sure he's probably a nice enough fellow. I hope someone is off camera, holding a gun on you, making you say "Whedon watched." That would absolve you of responsibility for parroting that catch phrase which was annoying from the beginning. Best. Leo.

I definitely don’t mean to be creepily staring at my cohost Mackenzie (or earlier, Lauren). I guess the reason I started this whole thing to begin with was because I too am a fan of this stuff, and I love getting to see how newbs react themselves. I’ll try to look less at them in the future. Also, not sure if you like Supernatural, but we also do “We Watch Winchester” where I definitely don’t stare at anyone but the screen (since I’M the newb in that one). Or maybe even started with a joke. What would seem to put a lie to everything I said is the fact that I've watch virtually every one of your Doctor Who, Buffy, and Angel videos. Your perceived idiosyncrasies couldn't have bothered me me all that much. That is to say, that I continued watching is certification that 99.whatever percent of any given reaction was delightful and kept me coming back for more. It is maybe my least favourite episode too. But at least most of the people that I got to seeing the show, appreciated this episode more than the 90 min pilot. Most stopped actually at the midway point and only continued another day after talking to me again. It was too slow for them. And this alternative pilot sets up most of the things from the pilot too. In a condensed form. “Serenity” shows and doesn’t tell, “the train job” tells instead of showing. I like “serenity” more because of that.

Haha sorry we talked over a line you enjoyed or a reveal you were waiting for... but it was our first time working together, we were getting into the groove. When you record a reaction video for something so long you get self-conscious about not talking for extended periods of time because it doesn’t feel exciting. Yeah, I don't think The Train Job was that bad. I saw the original broadcast, and was thoroughly intrigued and hooked by the end of the episode.
