Larry Hagman was a proper star. He loved the adoration and knew how to play to the audience. Wonderful actor.

Knew how to not take himself too seriously but played the iconic part of JR so well.

Thank you so much! In Germany, the character of J.R. Ewing was so popular that even his German dubbing actor Wolfgang Pampel became famous. He is still the German dubbing voice of Harrison Ford today, almost 80 years old.

I remember this interview. Wogan didn't usually present this show but so much was he linked to Dallas in the UK imagination that he was drafted in. Also, the show, usually watched by relatively few people, was specially extended for this edition, such was the public interest in Larry's first major interview on UK TV and talk of Dallas and JR's shooting at fever pitch.

Larry knew he had had a hit when he predicted Dallas would be on 14 to 20 years. That included the continuation of the series on Turner Network Television. By God, he was right.

Hagman loved doing the show and playing J.R. Ewing as much as we loved him and it too. And like the rest of the DALLAS cast he was delighted the show had a devoted fan base in the U.K., including Wogan who surely was the biggest celebrity fan as you can see here: he often spoke about it on his Radio 2 weekday morning show, and some of the cast appeared as guests on his BBC 1 chat show and BLANKETY BLANK.

Larry Hagman had a tradition of not speaking on Sundays and communicated through whistling, which baffled his co-stars.
Larry Hagman observed ‘Silent Sundays’ for 25 years as a self-care precaution after straining his voice during a taping.
His co-stars and loved ones found his habit frustrating and felt excluded.
Hagman’s dedication to maintaining his voice outweighed any inconvenience caused.
Hagman found solace and peace through intentional silence, treating it as a form of meditation practice.

Yeah, this was 1980. Wogan was already building a following on the radio and this was effectively a pilot for his BBC One chat show. Friday Night Saturday Morning was a useful vehicle for several guest hosts, but only Wogan - and perhaps Tim Rice - proved they have what it takes. Its worst host (by far) was former PM Harold Wilson!
