Tiger Salamander Poison - OUCH!

  • Salamander poison information: Tiger salamanders can secrete poison out of their tail. After handling a tiger salamander and rubbing my eye, my eye began to painfully burn. I flushed my eye with warm water. BAD IDEA! Warm water opens your capillaries which absorb more poison. FLUSH WITH COLD WATER. After several hours of intense pain, the pain subsided. There was slight swelling for another 24 hours.
If your dog or grandma puts a salamander in their mouth, they might get sick and foam out their mouth. The dog will likely be ok. Not so sure about your grandma. Wouldn't hurt to call a vet or doctor for professional information.
    More tiger salamander information.
I find tiger salamanders crossing west Texas, and Arizona roads after rains. Sometimes I find them crossing in dry conditions. It’s a wonder these delicate, thin skinned little amphibians can thrive in dry rocky terrain with cacti all over the place. For self-defense, they curl their head and tail up in an arching position to display the poison glands as a warning.
All salamanders can produce poison and toxicity varies widely between species. Though many more times than not, they wont secret it unless they feel threatened.
Salamanders have sensitive semi-permeable skin which means you might be poisonous to them. If you have bug spray, chemicals or even salty sweat on your hands, they will absorb it, possibly harming them. If you wash your hands before and after handling a salamander, and don't eat one, you shouldn't have any problem.

By far the cutest ugly amphibian I've ever seen, and a valuable life lesson to boot. Touching your eyes after handling a Tiger Salamander is Newt the thing to do.

I was born and raised in Tx, lived as far west as the Hill Country, played with snakes/horn toads/tarantulas but never once heard of the salamanders in your video. Cool. Thanks for the education.

and now: a lil german lesson with auntie cthulhu..
    1. Tiger Salamander is also a word in german.
also funny: the german name for the genus is.."Querzahnmolch" (across/askew-teeth newt-so they seem to have funny teeth? )
axolotl is one too I just read. :3
oh and some species seem to be able to do pathogenesis. awesome thingies.
2.our salamander are prettier::P (I mean we don't have any really interesting looking animals here, so at least we have those.)
so..europa has Feuersalamander (fire salamander) which have a beautiful intense yellow-black pattern.
As you have learned.. bright yellow and bright red is either a hint for:
Go away, because I can be itchy, burny or worse....
(or it means: I found out what mimicry is. plsdonteatme.)
Fire salamanders are really toxic- mostly for mice, but I read about cases where people got poisoned- which leads to burning, swelling, but getting it on mucous tissue can have worse effects..eating it may lead to your stomach bleeding cramps and pain.
but with every toxic thingie, cases of it happening are pretty rare
they produce it from glands, so you can poison yourself by handling those fellas skin on skin. they also can spit that stuff at you if you annoy them enough-and they can spit pretty far it seems
there is some folktale about people putting the toxin into brandy.. but that could also be just...well methanol. (but we humans are stupid enough that I wouldnt necessary rule the possibility out tbh)

It's a play on the species name, Ambystoma mavortium.

please continue to rescue salamanders despite their irritating skin! you can counteract the irritation with cold water and soap even if the tiger salamander coats your skin with their ooz.

How come I missed this one?
The 'family' of salamanders is somehow more fascinating to me than other amphibians and reptiles. It may have to do with the way people in the Middle Ages thought about them, like being resistent to or born out of fire.

    • @christiangasior4244
      @christiangasior4244 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Depends. Not these guys. It just feels like a little sandpaper. Giant salamanders like the hellbender can deliver a pretty good bite, and I’ve also heard that lesser and greater sirens can deliver a decent bite.
